A Patch of Potential; Modest treasure and history hunting, on the Whitby foreshore.

On a visit to Whitby, I saw an opportunity; a small patch where I suspected the sea and the river would drop metal things, had had most of the usual covering of sand washed off it by a storm, so I went for a bit of a treasure hunt.
I don't think this is one of my best videos, (though I admit, I do think that of every single videoI upload), I've been quite down on video making recently, dealing with a lot of life outside of YT, and it was a big struggle to tackle the editing. I'm more hopeful about the next few videos.
I do hope you enjoy this video regardless, and if you do, and would like to, then please give it a like, a subscribe, a comment, a share... whatever you feel comfortable with. Suggestions, comments and criticisms are all welcome.

Yes. Good things do happen. A Tom Burleigh video shows up when most needed. Here, in Massachusetts, we are reeling from the recent turn of events, trying to face what comes with courage. Listening to your beautiful voice, enjoying the simple pleasures in life... yes... a good thing. Thank you.

Thanks Artie, I had to take a step away from watching US politics after such a shock and horror. I'm glad there's courage left there, after hope has been so badly bruised. Fingers crossed, for checks and balances to curb some of the worst of possibilites over the next few years, and a blue wave of epic proportions at the midterms.

Thanks Annie, it's good to be back, and I think I will give an unboxing, (filming more in depth than I have been doing) a go sometime soon. I'm trying to prioritize the next couple of mudlarking videos first, and then I'll allow myself the pleasure of hunting through one of the 4 big lots I've got left (about 35kg of jewellery). 🙂

Thanks Erin. I'd be happy to make more poetry readings, and probably will in time; they're one of the things though, where my perfectionist inclinations really kick into high gear, and I tend to record each poem a hundreds times or more before I get one I'm happy with. Economically, they really don't make sense... the same amount of time spent on a video a minute long, as a mudlarking one 30-50 minutes long, but I've never been one to follow the path of economic sense to the exclusion of satisfaction and fullfilment. 🙂

Watching you video, I wondered about those apartment sitting so high up and overlooking the shore, I wonder what would it be like to wake up in the early morning fog seeing and listening to the sounds of the waves and surf and birds. I think one could get lost in that thought! Beautiful area even if it is very noisy! I love looking for old pieces of drift wood and seeing old coins and patterns in the stones. Yes I would love to see your jewelry hauls I am a old rock hound and I love old beads made from stone and shells. :)

Thanks Debra. My girlfriend has a flat a bit further back from the shore, we hear the birds there, and can see the sea and the abbey but can't hear it. I don't think I'd enjoy living closer, it's endlessly noisy and I like pure quiet too much, much though I do enjoy a walk on the beach, picking up stones and shells and things.🙂 I haven't tried making beads yet, got the kit to give glass beads a go, and got a tumbler to try getting some small pebbles nicely smooth... so might give it a go. Shells I have another plan for, I'm hoping to make some simple jewellery by pouring molten silver into some, and then taking the shell off.

@@tom_burleigh I certainly understand the quiet, I live above a intersection in the south side of a small city, I look down and watch the light blinking red at night and turning green, people shouting, some people who are set to make u turns and it usually causes a crash in the end.. oy I do miss open fields and the sounds of the pheasants and crows! I think you should try to make your own beads and tumble stones! Sounds like it would turn out cool! I am finally trying to learn the sewing machine after all these years, I want to learn to quilt, with one, I have trouble holding a needle these days, so I am determined to learn it one way or another! :) One step at a time!

Well Tom, I have to say I greeted your video with a bit more than usual enthusiasm than usual! We've got some problems on our hands over here... So, the pleasant voice and curiously parallel recent finds and conditions- like magic through the years! The tides that pull and rush out leave the heavy things on the pan, and low/behold, that's exactly where I was over the past days, finding strangely similar things as you did (last year lol). And it's not the 'what' of the find, so much as the lilting narrative and tidy conclusion. Short recent tale: found small dump off my lane. found 1/2 a serving spoon, among other things. Cleaned to find 925 Sterling. Sold as an afterthought as scrap- along with the rest. A welcome $30- and so unsuspected. Rattled on too long. Still recovering from the blow. At least Maine went for Kamala...

Ah yes, the problems over there have given me a few sleepless nights, and the result broke my habit of endless political video watching, at least for a while. It was a shock, a horror, and will be pretty awful for the US and the world. Maybe it won't be quite so bad as I fear, fingers crossed. Congratulations on the nice little silver find, and finding a local dump 🙂

In all honesty, Whitby isn't great for mudlarking, but it's brought a new old hobby back to me, (one of my very first hobbies really), picking up cool looking rocks... the glacial boulder clay deposits just beyond the harbour towards Sandsend are full of interesting minerals and constantly being washed out onto the beach. And Robin Hood's bay, I must get back there soon myself too... fossils and septarian nodules, and maybe a walk through the tunnels where I found silver coins again. 🙂 I hope your next visit is a good one.🙂

That was a lovely video , thank you :) SO lovely to see Whitby and remember our trip there . I'd love to see some metal detecting and the results of breaking up those clumps. THere must be some exciting treasures hidden within. That tankard!!!! WOW! Very impressive :) You have an eye for a bargain.

Thanks Caroline. I'm hopeful I'll be able to afford a metal detector soon, and looking forward to giving beach detecting a try, (I've only tried detecting on a neighbour's land, and there was only 60's stuff from an old summer camp to find). As for the metal clumps, yeah, maybe a video in itself. Aqua chigger did one on just one clump, and there's a dozen or more clumps there, (though currently buried by the sand). I think after the recent wintery weather here in West Yorkshire, the nettles will have died down a bit, though it'll be another month or two before they're rotted away. Either way, I hope I'm in the area for a meet up when you next head over for a visit. 🙂

Good to hear you Tom, I hope all is well! I enjoyed being on the beach, unfortunately my timing is bad whilst visiting Whitby and the tide has always beaten me. You’ve spiked my interest so I’m off to listen to Stealing the Fire! Thank you, take care. 🙂

Thanks Charlotte, the tide is pretty frustrating to a lot of my attempts at beach activities there... but I've had some good outings and I find new things to keep me interested there each visit, (last time, I found out about the woods and castle ruin at Sandsend, (Mulgrove estate)). I hope you can find something to like on Stealing the Fire's page, I found the earlier stuff much more to my taste. 🙂

@tom_burleigh
@tom_burleigh 9 күн бұрын
I've walked a short way up the beck, once beyond the road bridge it starts to feels quite like the West yorkshire rivers I'm used to, (the geology is very different from the rocks on Sandsend beach, which I think must be washing out of the boulder clay left by the last glacier). I didn't find much, but I didn't go far... maybe next visit, and now I know about the castle I might start a fair way further up, maybe a hundred or so meters downstream of the castle. 🙂

Yes, it was very sad that they had to close, a very special shop for the 9 years it was open and the people who ran it became good friends. Sadly the greedy new landlords don't appreciate non-profit collectives. 😢

Scabby metal for the win 🙂. I've found gold and silver, and chasing after those tends to be a bit depressing, lots more looking, lots more effort, and not many finds of them. By far the easiest way to them is find the scabby metal, sell it to scrap yards, buy shiny gold and silver.

Tom, there is not a lot of coins deeper on the iron beach. Some coins wash down from the town onto the beach surface or are dropped, as you know, and then accumulate oxygenated material, which makes them heavier, and sink into the sand with the tide. But without being able to set the discrimination on the detector to finer less-oxygenated metals, like silver or copper, the detector won't find them. You might as well drag a magnet along the surface to pick up the ferrous oxide metals, and sand or rock. I think that's how detecting works

I will just add a comment about your Georgian? silver table piece - Antiques Road Show. Without a hallmark or a maker's mark on the piece, you would have to communicate with someone whose business it is, to buy and sell these kinds of items. Thanks by the way, for introducing the music to your Abbey part of the video. I really like that combined music and vision aspect of your videos.

Another sad colonial checking in here. We need 'rest out of the situation,' and your videos will do splendidly. I would enjoy seeing you st work on your projects, or simply the objects themselves. (Tooting me own horn here: I am working on my needlepoint skills. Had no intention of starting any new, project, but I purchased some thrift shop needlepoint yarn thinking it was for knitting. Then I found a 3 foot length of canvas, then I found more yarn...)

Hi Tom, Will you add closed captioning at some point? While I've had a cochlear device added, I'm just learning how to "hear" again. I looks like a lovely area - and I may watch without sound. Glad to see a new video. Hope you're well.

Hi Louise, I did manually add closed captions for a few videos, but it became too much work for me. My girlfriend did it for some more videos, but one of her hands has nerve damage, and she can't do it all that often... sadly, I don't earn enough to pay anyone else to do it, yet... though I do hope I can in the future. I hope the cochlear implant has helped beat the tinitus!? I'm learning to live with M.E. (something that I've had for 23 years, but didn't know, and wondered why I kept crashing so often), but generally feeling fairly well at the moment 🙂

Whitby Abby. Why is it,that Abbys fall into ruin so beautifully? It’s almost as if they were designed for that very purpose. Like an architectural plan,to allow us to ponder our mortality. I saw a remarkable one,near Brampton,8 years ago.

Absolutely, I've been gathering scrap silver too to give jewellery making a try.
