According to the showrunner, 7-8 had a lot more moments with Usopp. They even filmed it, but it did not make the final cut. Probably because of the strike. But damn...I agree with you Usopp seems underutilized in this season.

What people don’t get about the marine subplot is that it IS One Piece, in a way that the original East Blue wasn’t. It introduces all of these themes, the things that make One Piece truly great as a series far earlier in the story than they would otherwise be able to. A more accurate translation of East Blue would lead to people thinking One Piece is all like East Blue, when it’s simply not. This is a way that the core themes of the whole series were able to be used to hook new audiences early on in a way that a more traditional East Blue adaptation could never. Just as a couple of minor examples, Garp and Zeff’s conversation really adds considerable depth to the theme of generational divide and passing down dreams to the next generation, something that would later become far more important with the concept of inherited will. Revealing Luffy’s Grandfather as a high ranking marine does a lot more to characterize him as someone who has truly overcome challenges in his life, unlike the manga where Luffy is basically an unstoppable monster for all of East Blue and it isn’t until the Timeskip that we really learn about his childhood. Not to mention how major the changes to arlong were in the improvement of the story. Giving Arlong a role as the boss of East Blue added so much cohesion to the season that was otherwise very much lacking in the original version, and his mentions of Fishman discrimination and his hatred for Jinbe did a lot to add depth to both his character and the world of One Piece, far earlier than we ever got such things in the original. In fact, the manga version of East Blue implies that Arlong has Jinbe backing him, which later turns out obviously not to be the case, but in Johnny and Yosaku’s explanation of the warlords they mention Arlong as a subordinate of Jinbe. The Marine Plot also adds a lot to the concept of the warlord system as, in the manga, it’s not until Thriller Bark that we ever see a Warlord actually doing something on the Government’s command, making it feel like the title doesnt actually have much obligation behind it. But Garp summoning Mihawk clearly demonstrates to the audience the relationship that the government has with the Warlords.

Thank you for commenting! I agree that the marine plot added more depth to the series. The only part I really disliked about it was how it ended, but the rest was pretty solid.

@@HotRodster I agree that the ending wasn’t great, and that Garp’s character and intent were not made very clear, but I think the ending there does a lot to make clear to the audience that the world beyond East Blue is way bigger and scarier than anything they’ve encountered so far, even Arlong. Luffy overcame Arlong, but we saw him go all out without being able to land a single hit on Garp, which is very accurate to the scaling of the world. I think it helps a lot to think of that “ending” not as an ending at all but as a teaser for what is to come. Garp is a man of such station that he can order around Warlords, and such strength that Luffy couldn’t lay a single finger on him. Even though we haven’t yet heard about his height as the Hero of the Marines, we know that he is an important figure in a much bigger and scarier world than we have gotten to see yet, and this ending says “just you wait. Shit is about to get real.”

The main thing I took away from the LA, is there's a reason One Piece takes its time. If each episode had been given an extra 15 to 30 minutes to play out, we could have avoided so many compromises, and got an event better series. Obviously the budget would have to spread further, but Kayas mansion never needed to go that hard, there were other compromise that could be made to include more character moments.

That's not true. In the city of Wano when Kurozumi Tama offered Luffy food for rescuing her thinking that she had more. When he learned that she starved because he ate all she had he felt guilty. In fact, this was the main motivation to take down Kaido. Plus, food makes Luffy heal faster.
@HotRodster
@HotRodster 5 ай бұрын
My main point was that Luffy isn't observant enough to pick up on those kind of things. He doesn't think about the potential consequences of his actions, especially when it comes to food.
@cwega2463
@cwega2463 5 ай бұрын
@@HotRodsteri think you’re mistaken to be honest. the ONLY time Luffy considers consequences for actions is when it comes to food. his motivation in about a third of the arcs in the series is about giving his friends a place where they can eat whatever they want.

@@cwega2463 Can you provide an example from the anime showing Luffy considering the consequences of his actions with food? In my memory, it never happens. Anytime someone offers him food, no matter how rich or poor they appear to look, he accepts.

Yeah but that’s a WAAAAAY later version of Luffy after he’s learned and grown so much. East Blue Luffy wouldn’t have spared a single thought about that.

The Joker is the Joker, he's bad shit crazy. Buggy is not a psychotic clown, he's a normal dude with a huge inferiority complex pretending to be big, to the point it seems he is trying to convince himself of his greatness, because not even himself believe in him. He breaks character constantly. The Joker is literally a madman insane dude, lol. I really did not get that much of a Jocker vibe from Buggy,maybe like... the first minute? XD

Personally, I can see the "different kind of pirate" is a nod to One Piece's pre-series one shot, where Oda established distinct types of pirates (peace mains vs morganeers).

Morgan was a narcissist, both in text and the anime, they just made it more subtle as to be easier for live action. Kuro may not have had his whole crew, but I guess the showrunners played a haunted house concept to save money. It made Kuro creepier though and I still hate it if someone adjusts their glasses like that. At least the show kept Usopp's candy striper moments, how he told stories to Kaya like he did with his mom. Yeah the show has it's problems, but it is the best live action adaptation of anime made in the West I've ever seen. So much so, I've been trying to audition for it. I want to help the showrunners bring Chopper to life. My guess is possibly motion capture CGI, maybe some puppetry and fur suits. In any case, I can do it!

That's cool! I hope you get to be a part of it. It's always good to have passionate fans to bring this show to life. And I agree with you that despite its flaws, its still definitely the best live action adaptation of an anime.

The chopper thing will probably be full CGI. They are pretty good by now. Heck scobby in the last Scooby Doo movie was CGI, Groot was CGI. So chopper will unfortunately be cgi ish. Man in green suit with visual molding sensors. He's an animal with a df so chopper will be a new source of money drain by himself.

I don't think it's a perfect adaptation. It's a good one, but there's no adapting this manga. Even the anime couldn't do it justice. The live action is by FAAAAAR the worst iteration of this story. I think that the only positive purpose that it could serve is that it will get a few people to actually read the manga. That's what it's for. It will never be finished anyway. By the time they got to the end of this story, even at the breakneck speed they're telling it, all the actors will be senior citizens.
@HotRodster

I disagree. I don't think the live action is the worst iteration of the story. The Episode of East Blue TV Special was the worst as it was super rushed. I also don't see a problem with the cast aging throughout the series. The age of the Straw Hats don't seem to be all that important.
