His mother was a devout Christian. When Maynard was 11 she suffered a stroke/aneurysm and was paralyzed. However, she never abandoned her faith and he was angry at her about that. How could she, who believed and did everything the religion asked of her, be the one to suffer this ugly incident. “He did it all for you” is the most hurtfully sarcastic line ever.

He wasn't just angry at her, he was angry at the other people in her church too. From what I've gleaned from his interviews and stuff over the years, some people acted as though this was punishment for some unseen sin and kind of ostracized her. So "fuck your god" to me always sounded like he was angry at a god that would do this to one of his faithful, but also one who would allow that kind of poor behavior to run rampant in their church. Very interesting song with a lot of layers to peel back.

Despite being struck down with paralysis for 27 years ( 10000 days ) his mother, Judith Marie, held absolute faith in her God. Several other Tool songs touch on Maynards feelings and frustration about this and about his love for her, especially Wings for Marie pts 1 & 2 which need to be listened to together ( and in this case I think, with lyrics )

He nailed it. Jimmy and The Patient also deal with this subject. Jimmy is from his perspective as a young boy and The Patient from Judith's perspective.

Spot on. Also, Perfect Circle's Passive is also about his mother I think.

Immediately liked your style and your genuine need to know the origins and deeper meanings to the songs. It shows humility on your part as well that you WANT and ask for help to know the different aspects of the story behind the music. Especially TOOL! Maynard is a pure genius and every song hypnotizes me, AND gives me a headache as well trying to follow the depth of the songs lmao! (It's true though) - Stay safe, take care and keep rockin' ; )

Judith Marie was Maynard's mother's name. Her illness and subsequent coma was the inspiration for many of his lyrics and poems. He loved his mother, but he didn't love her God. I'm so glad that you picked that song, 'cause it's definitely one of their more moving tunes with a heavy undertone. I hope it inspired you to check a few more out. Thanks heaps for the vid, man! ☺️

Ooh, mate! You brought it on yourself, this is the begginning of the trilogy about Maynard's mom. Us Tool Army are not going to let you off the hook now until you react to the other two. So I'll start the requests for "Tool - Wings for Marie" (trilogy part2) and "Tool - 10 000 Days" (part3).

I'm a rabid tool fan and I haven't gone to your back catalogue so I don't know but if you haven't checked out the band Jinjer. They are a Ukrainian metal band. Pisces live session is the general introduction for reactors, but if you want to see it live I'd suggest perennial live at wacken, or who is going to be the one official video live.

Once you start down the Maynard's mom journey, you have to listen to a series of songs. Judith is a fine start. Then TOOL's Jimmy, Wings of Marie & 10,000 Days back-to-back, and possibly Jambi.
@michaelullo21524 жыл бұрын
I'd add in "The Patient", as well.
@DrCrowie4 жыл бұрын
Jimmy is about himself as a young boy, Jambi has got nothing to with his mother but its a fucking killer track so yea listen!! Jambi is more about his journey through being a well known musician and the temptations he has succumbed to, but also the spiritual enlightening he has personally felt through that journey.

This is part of Judith Marie's(his mother)trilogy.This song Judith is about his mom.She was paralyzed.In a commentary he did for this song he said when he said fuck your god he wasnt talked about the actual God but a god that would separate people.The God his mom and many of her religious friends looked up to That would punish and wasn't aligned with love and connection. Next you have to do "Wings for Marie" and then "10,000days" together in 1 video to finish this trilogy

I don't know if he really truly despises Christianity or if he is just being honest and questioning. If you take this song on it's own it does seem that way. However if you listen to the later songs about his mother's suffering he seems to grow a lot. It was good to hear this first. Now do JIMMY, THE PATIENT, and lastly WINGS FOR MARIE/10,000 DAYS.
@anthonypallen79194 жыл бұрын
Again all of their songs are amazing . Just different enough from tool, Maynard and Billy both sing(scream) and it's less off tempo. Again all songs esp. the live album at Red rocks, Echo's something something

Also apparently some members of his mother's church blamed her for her own condition, asking what sin she'd committed to be punished so; this is addressed more in Wings for Marie where he excoriates these self- righteous people. I think it was the hypocrisy of some Christians that really angered him, and he is asking of his mother how could she stay so faithful to Jesus and take all this abuse. But here he is definitely venting and demanding some answers from Jesus himself it seems.
