In this episode we spend a perfect day on The Downwind Camps with world champion surfski paddlers, Jasper and Dawid Mocke, in the picturesque Fish Hoek, South Africa. The dynamic duo guides us through the essential building blocks of downwind surfski paddling, with a special focus on the catch phase of the stroke in the day’s first session while also catching some waves which they call the third pillar of downwind paddling. Another essential skill!
The day unfolds against the stunning backdrop of False Bay, South Africa, as our paddlers embark on the world-renowned Millers Run, considered the finest downwind surfski route globally. The journey takes us past the iconic Roman Rock Lighthouse, beneath Elsies Peak and into Fish Hoek, the home of several world surfski champions like Jasper Mocke, Dawid Mocke, Sean Rice, Kenny Rice and Nicholas Notten.
As the south easterly wind picks up, the conditions become optimal for a great downwind. Not too big or small! Jasper paddles alongside the participants and gives valuable guidance and coaching before giving them space to practice and learn! They paddle a variety of surfski models from Epic Kayaks and Fenn Kayaks, all equipped with the Mocke Flow PFD - the world’s finest paddling PFD. The final paddle of the day is participating at the Seadog Paddle Series, an event in Fish Hoek that is “never cancelled” come ANY weather.
