I did the same in 2011. My dad had a brain tumor, was operated, but developed some nasty side effects. He spend his last weeks in a hospice and I was there with him. Fed him, washed him and other stuff. That experience even led me to my next job, I am a geriatric nurse for almost 11 years now. Thanks, I always miss the streams due to the time difference. I am a Patreon supporter for a few years now.

I've been watching for some years and am a very proud owner of your version of the Great Wave. Thank you for your story. It made me think of my parents and this crazy succession of experiences that we call life. Like you, most of my parents and grandparents generation were smokers. Despite that some of them lived to their 90s but smoking took its toll. As an aside, I would say (in my experience) a Doctor not being able to find a vein isn't necessarily indicative of his/her surgical skill, but I also know that the quality of medical treatment can vary. I can only imagine the pain you experienced, but having had a kidney stone 30 years ago, I have an inkling of how much fun the kidneys can cause (I got a shot of morphine out of it). I think one of the reasons we're here is to bring order to chaos and you've done that and so much more. You've mastered your art and, it seems, popularised and reinvigorated it. God bless and good health to you

Man, can't believe it's already half a decade since I first discovered Dave and Mokuhankan through "Remembering A Carver", and the video itself is 2 years away from reaching its 10th anniversary. A lot of people have said it, but I still feel like Dave's natural skills in storytelling deserve more appreciation. Whether it's an edited essay video of Dave talking about the history and process of making Japanese woodblock prints, or a live stream where he just continuously talks in front of his carving table, I always find his stories endearing to listen to.

I first learned about your channel on an ASMR playlist where one of your David's Choice videos were curated. I had no idea what woodblock prints were, but in the video you said something to the effect of "people are always so surprised to hear that it's carved," and I actually shouted at the screen: "What!? It's fucking carved!?" I took off to your channel to see further how this process worked and found it very satisfying to watch. I've been hooked ever since.

I love this personal story of struggle and survival. It touched me deeply, especially since my best friend (who moved from Sweden to Japan years ago since he loved the culture and the country) passed away 4 years ago from cancer. In a strange but beautiful kind of way this story has made the exquisite Mokuhankan prints I bought soon after I had become a fan of your channel (soon after my friend passed away) come “full circle” for me ❤ In a selfish kind of way I’m glad you beat the cancer David 😉💪

Very glad to hear you’re doing well and the cancer has been gone. We just had a small scare with my 83-yr-old mother who was found to have colon cancer during a colonoscopy. Thankfully, it was so new that it couldn’t even have been classified as Stage 1, so it was an easy fix when they took the polyp out at that moment. Other than needing to go every year for a colonoscopy for the rest of her life, my mom is doing fine and no issues. Cancer is a scary word and you summed it up so well. The sun was still shining, birds still chirping, but for your personal world, it rocked your foundations. The same for my family.

Dave, I’m glad to hear you are doing well. Thank you for all you’ve shared and for all the inspiration and enthusiasm for woodblock printing and the Japanese arts in general. You’ve made a difference for a lot of people, including myself. I don’t know about Japan, but in the US medical students and doctors in training (residents) do a lot if IV’s and usually get pretty good at it. After training, however, things like IV’s will frequently be done by nurses and other members of the team and rarely done by the physician so those skills can atrophy. It is not necessarily unusual for a doctor who is very skilled in their area of practice to have less than stellar IV skills. Also, great pronunciation of the medical terminology.
