Mum's speech at the end is real working class philosophy - on the nature of freedom, relationships and creating a sense of meaning. Great stuff!

More than an entertaining story, these kinds of movies provide a time capsule and glimpse into a culturally important time of the 20th century. Lots of changes were going on.

Blimey ! I enjoyed this very very much ! What a great script & cast. Not only entertaining but quite heartwarming ! I love these lesser known early 60s British dramas about the working class. Thank you VERY much for uploading for us to enjoy ! CHEERS !! 🙂

Roy Kinnear was so great. What a loss to the world that he died so young. He would be extraordinarily proud of his son, Rory, I think.

Very good story and fine acting from the dependable Rita T. And good evocation of late 50s/early 60s London.

Excellent Movie! Mike Sarne was a favourite of mine in the '60s. He had a typical pop singer's voice, although he could also direct, write, and act. He topped the charts with "Come Outside' featuring Wendy Richards 😍

Pretty good "slice of life" movie. Mike Sarne (Ricky) had a # 1 UK hit record in 1962, with Wendy Richard (yes... that Wendy Richard); the song was "Come Outside" and can be found on KZbin. Thanks for posting such a nice variety of interesting films.

That funny faced looking girlfriend of Ricky! I looked and looked at her and was smitten by a sense of strong familiarity. I was like "Now I've seen that face before! But where? Where where where!?!?" Nearly racked my brains trying to remember while watching the beginning of this flick. Then it struck me where! That Omar Sharif and Julie Christy flick, Dr. Zhivago!!! She played that Soviet power plant laborer, Zhivago's daughter!!! Those very wide opened eyes of her! Can never forget that!

Bernard Lee who played the father of this family drama is best remembered as "M" in the early Bond films. He was an actor who could switch with ease from working class to "toff" roles. This is very much a lost film and one of the least known of the Dearden-Relph partnership. It gives a good idea of the largely white community of Bethnal Green, East London, in the early 1960s as working class districts were ripped apart and families resettled in high rises. Dearden and Relphn also gave us "Victim" with Dirk Bogarde, the first British picture to show some sympathy for homosexuals.

This film is an incredible time capsule, as are (all movies to some extent) many of the gritty 'realist' /kitchen-sink dramas of the 1960s. I found this film after rewatching A Taste of Honey last night, another time capsule of Manchester and Blackpool, from 1961.

This movie just didn't float my boat. Rather dreary and overly "chatty". I don't think it was a success when it came out and, after watching it, I can see why. I love this channel and watch it all the time. Please keep up your excellent (and greatly appreciated) efforts. I hope my constructive criticism of the films isn't interpreted as ingratitude.

What a terrible film. Fit only for compulsory viewing to be shown to the authorities who run our country for the criminal disruption they cause to peoples lives. How watching the unfortunate low life end of life can be considered entertainment I can't imagine.
