Robert Fripp's electric guitar is so clear on "The Emperor in his war room" (on the previous album) that I am always surprised that he is supposedly somewhere in the mix on this song, "lemmings" and "man-erg". Can't hear him! Anyway, One of my all-time favorite Peter Hammill compositions- Van der Graaff Generator must be the most underrated band to ever have existed...

An absolute masterpiece. Peter Hamill and the gang take us on a 23 minutes rollercoaster ride of emotions. They wrote the song piece by piece and patched them together beautifully.

Heard this album when I was about 13 years old. My listening diet at the time was quite eclectic - Zep, Floyd, Yes, ELP, Genesis, GG, Rundgren, Rush................ but nothing prepared me for this !

Questa suite è un capolavoro assoluto che si somma ad altri capolavori composti da questa meravigliosa band...dalla mente geniale e creativa di Peter Hammill, voce incredibile e immenso artista (i suoi lavori da solista sono bellissimi...The silent corner...Chamaleon in the shadow...In camera...ecc.....). Questa grande band è stata protagonista del favoloso Prog anni 70 (insieme ai Pink Floyd, ai King Crimson, ai Genesis, gli Yes, ai GG.....). Questo non è solo un brano è un viaggio attraverso gli stati alterati della mente di un vecchio solitario guardiano del faro dove in preda ad un delirio dovuto alla malattia che lo sta provando ,nella sua mente appaiono visioni spettrali incubi notturni che lo tormentano fino a portarlo alla pazzia !!!! Ma è anche un viaggio dentro l'inconscio umano dove albergano le paure i timori i dubbi che spesso ci portiamo dentro , ma praticamente tutto l' album è percorso da queste tematiche esistenziali amletiche non certo allegre , qui l allegria in questo disco non alberga certamente ma è proprio in queste atmosfere in queste sonorità così dark e sperimentali oltre alle liriche poetiche oscure e avvolte di mistero di Hammill unite alle sue straordinarie capacità vocali interpretative che risiede la forza il fascino di questo INCREDIBILE album !!!! Era il 1971 !!!!! Anno di altri meravigliosi lavori di altrettante mitiche bands come Genesis yes Jethro Tull King Crimson Pink Floyd Gentle Giant etc !!! Che musica che idee musicali rivoluzionarie !!!!! THOSE WERE THE DAYS !!!!!!!

what a great great singer and what an imagination ! i saw him few years ago , in a Church , i was not so far from him , at the end of the concert i could talk to him man ...im not shy but talking to peter hammill ...i coudnt ! even if im a musician , and i can play but peter hammill ...man ...he looked so tired and thin ...he looked at me , oh sh...i fell like sh...impossible !
