As a retired (28 years) air traffic controller… I am SO glad we never had flying cars! “Real” pilots were scary enough often times!
@JarrodFLif3r4 ай бұрын
The issue is the financial restrictions vs practical skill based restrictions it takes to be a licensed pilot. Plenty of people who are skilled enough to be pilots can not do it over financial restrictions, yet plenty of wealthy people who are not skilled nor disciplined can easily get a pilot's license after paying enough to get through the minimal tests and quals. We see it constantly in general aviation with mishap investigations where licensed pilots with limited time and quals do something stupid and get themselves and their passengers killed. Money can buy ones the pilot's license but can not buy the skill, discipline and ability to admit one made a mistake(ie inadvertant IFR) to be an actual pilot

I think I've got the picture. Aviation is like having drinks with you: #1 You call the shots. - #2 Reaching the service ceiling could be possible. #3 In spite of you doing your best giving good advice - not following the directions and using common sense - the outcome could be chrashing in a micro cell... 4# flying low and fast has its perils... bird strikes could be a problem. You might not be sure of what hit you. Later upon inspection trying to reconstruct the events. You feel blessed being relative unscaved. Even when the details are obscured - the bird has left an impression. #5 enjoying wild life is great - but there's a time and place for everything! I could be wrong being a layman - using a laymans terms using a somewhat superficial language and understanding. I try to use my words careful and within the context. However I've learned the hard way - just getting out of the house I'm already in trouble... Waiting for the wife getting ready to go - I could be tempted to watch YT and commenting. The wife looks at the clock giving me this scary look saying: "STOP GOOFING AROUND! We're late.." I'm eager to comply - However trying to tell you read her loud and clear by saying "I'm ready for a quickie..." I would have thought it was evident - I WERE ready for a quick departure! She never ceases to amaze me. Probably why I'm still fond of her. She's far better at multitasking than me. She's way better at giving directions than me. I'm not always sure of why she's giving me directions. But it's a helping hand keeping me out of trouble being concerned for my health and safety. I'm surprised by the similarities between marriage and aviation. You're not alone - why playing by the book and unwritten rules makes sense. Failing to observe them will be having consequences...

Everything that makes a GOOD CAR (suspension, strong (heavy) body, transmission, etc.) makes a really BAD AIRPLANE and everything that makes a GOOD AIRPLANE (wings, etc.) makes a really BAD CAR. *He's still right.* Note: The spate of electric "drone" style "flying cars" is no exception to what he said. Flying cars exist. My personal favorite is the PAL-V , which is a road-worthy autogyro. The Terrafugia is a folding wing option that already has FAA approval, but I’m not sure it is commercially available. Flying cars cost as much or more than a small airplane and you have to have a pilot license to operate one. Getting a pilot license will cost you about $7000 U.S., and it normally costs over $10K. Then you have to buy the vehicle. Legally required annual inspections will cost you about $1200, depending on the aircraft, and that’s not including any repairs discovered that are required to keep the aircraft airworthy. I won’t get into the hassles you have to go through to get and maintain your medical evaluation to be permitted to fly. Bottom line is flying is prohibitively expensive, legally highly restricted, and depends on your current medical condition. I am a licensed pilot and a licensed aircraft mechanic. I know this stuff. I’ve been through it.

Doesn't matter how clever the automation gets with a flying car, the weather is going to be the killer. Bad weather (or even clear air turbulence) gives you a random variable for which normal pilots do their best to mitigate by avoidance altogether. Also, automation like this would require redundancy in every critical component, which increases cost. I have personally developed software for dual-redundant control systems, and it adds far more complexity than you might imagine. I personally dont think this concept will ever become mainstream for cost, practical and safety reasons.

If you had glide wings, odds are you would already be using them. Parachutes aren't going to be realistic either. sure, a person can land using a parachute just fine, but a vehicle weighs considerably more... you need anywhere between 5-10 human parachutes at least. And where to land? i'd hope you aren't flying over a forest, rocky terrain, bodies of water, or any urban area that is not the suburbs... There are reasons why planes don't have parachutes, even though, in theory we have all the technology needed to install them. You also have to keep in mind that due to people flying rather then using roads, the prevalence and size of roads will be significantly reduced. No, the answer to the awful experience of driving to and from work every days lies in... not using cars... as cars are the only reason our commutes are this horrendous. Legs, bikes and public transit, together with smart city planning (or rather not 5th grade city planning) is the only thing needed to turn your dreaded commutes into a quick, easy, pleasant and healthy experience.

Even a medium-sized drone can be heard from a fair distance away, but something large enough to create lift for a human makes far too much noise to be acceptable, like dozens of leaf blowers operating all at once. Multiply that times the people commuting in a neighborhood and it would be untenable. It's one reason the demo videos rarely feature live sound from the demo and why drones rarely record audio. Advances in blade design have helped, but it's still a very noisy operation. Nevertheless, it's an easy which I would love to see solved soon. Well, maybe fix the damn leaf blower sound issue first.

I guess the aero car from the grand tour, the one Jezza said would be on sale in a year, I think it was Chech, well looks like it never made it.

And he ends the video giving us more (probably false) hope that flying cars are just around the corner.

The issues with futuristic robot aids are pretty mundane, as in “what if it malfunction up a flight of stairs?” As in, would you want a 600 pounds brick of steel fall on you because it’s low on battery? What if it shuts down during a fire emergency and blocks the exit? Mostly stuff like that. Which are totally valid concerns to have. Others are “if you market it as helping the elderly, how do you convince an old person to trust the machine?” Is there a risk that the help might hurt the elderly if for example they have to be spoon fed and they resist for some reason?

Didn’t Simon do a very similar video on this or one of his other channels a while back?

Great. Let's add "air rage" to our problems.😊

There's a dude around my place (on water) that has a boat plane...No not a seaplane (plane that has pontoons), its a boat 1st, plane 2nd. Idk if its not meant to fly too high, but he's never flying it higher than maybe 500-700ft: prob due to it not being the most aerodynamic thing ever. As a boat its slow AF...but hey, you can't do everything and have everything.

Haha, high quality roads. Michigan would put that statement to shame.

There are already robots that cook for you, multiple of them actually. You just need a few hundred thousand dollars at the moment.

Would you consider a video on rendered meat? Sausage, burgers. It is so different taste from 1980s. What has changed? Thank you. Grid.

I don't think we are that far away, once we have a driverless road system there is no reason drone technology wouldn't be capable of carrying passengers, GPS is 3D

I only tapped on this because I knew it would be a conversation between Simon and my empty self while I fall asleep listening to the most pragmatic idea of why flying cars are enigmatically stupid. And I’m just 30 seconds in. Let’s see if I’m wrong. Wake me up later.

Im a professional driver, and one time student pilot, and just like automated cars; it wont happen until infrastructure and technology allows if ever. The human factor is the sticking point because drivers are neither good enough nor trained sufficiently for ground travel as it is. If flying cars became a thing, my first purchase would be an anti aircraft gun.

I would like to have a flip that is like the comunicator and really working. Even a pin communicater would be good. Having both would be great!

While the problems with flying cars are numerous, dealing with 'traffic jams' like on the road will not be one of them.

I'm sure people will keep trying to make a flying car, but they'll always end up with something that isn't really good as either a plane or a car. There's a fundamental issue. Aerodynamically, planes are designed for lift, while cars are designed for negative lift (downforce).

Everyone keeps talking about the extra dimension being the problem. It isn’t. It’s a benefit, it’s more probable to not collide with a greater number of dimensions. 1 dimension is the worst. That would be: in your lane with someone in front and behind. You are literally exponentially less safe this way. The real problem is the need to control the aircraft and not crash and kill yourself as well as those on the ground and the property damage, oh my.
@jskillet89124 ай бұрын
Think about the pre flight tests you would have to do on one of these things, taking it on the road, and all the debris would cause a huge problem. There's no way you could just drive up to the runway and take off. All those hinges, imagine the flight to flight costs, you would basically have to take it to a specialized mechanic in between every flight. This makes no sense, cars arw good at being cars, theyre not boats or airplanes, why cant we keep it that way?
@janiceperkins43404 ай бұрын
I suppose it would be just like a pre-trip inspection before a roadtrip in an RV 🤷♀️ Not only do I checked all fluids, air pressure/condition of all 6 tires, and lights, I need to check hitch ,safety chains, wheel straps, outside luggage compartment doors, and electric steps! Plus, ensure items/doors inside are secure. Takes some time but I do it every time I hit the road 🤷♀️
