Current Time's Borys Sachalko joined a Ukrainian crew in a Krab self-propelled howitzer. The four-man team used to operate a Soviet-era Msta-S howitzer and say the new Polish-built Krab is faster, easier to operate, and more accurate.

@cy-one common! You’re referring to propaganda not facts. Germany mostly helps in declarations but somehow that help doesn’t substantiate (both - financial aid and physical aid - many declarations very slow to fulfil and implement, abandoned in multiple cases). In the meantime - without rapid response from Poland Ukraine would be defeated in the first weeks of assault.

Yeah. Pretty much every western (and aligned) self propelled howitzer is better than the m109. You can upgrade the design over and over... but ultimately the M109 started in the 60s and it still has a few design legacies from it's age that limits its capabilities. The US should have replaced it but each program kept getting canned and each time they did a limited upgrade to it instead.

Slava Ukraine. Slava Poland. The Russian atrocities in Poland in WWII and afterwards are well-known. I am so proud of my eastern European brothers and sisters. I grew up in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and all my neighbors were Czech, Polish, Latvian, Romanian, Estonian and on and on from that part of the world. They were good neighbors always quick to invite you in for a delicious fresh knish. Happy and good-hearted people who somehow left their wartime experiences behind when they moved to their new country. I worked in many machine shops and these people were excellent tool and die men. They could get you hair-breadth precision which in those days was done by hand, not by CNC machines. That doesn't mean they forgot their wartime experiences. It means they had a new purpose in life. To live as free men and women pursuing their hopes and dreams. And when it comes to America these folks of eastern European descent are generally the most patriotic I have ever met. They realize that death may be a consequence when fighting for your freedom and they stoically accept that.

Here is the info on the Krab Howitzer from Wikipedia: The AHS Krab (Polish for crab) is a 155 mm NATO-compatible self-propelled tracked gun-howitzer designed in Poland by Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW), by combining the South Korean K9 Thunder chassis with a British BAE Systems AS-90M Braveheart turret with French Nexter Systems 52-calibre long gun and Polish WB Electronics' "Topaz" artillery fire control system. The 2011 version used a Nexter Systems barrel and UPG chassis. The 2016 production batch utilized the Hanwha Defense K9 chassis with KMW+Nexter Defense Systems long gun, Rheinmetall barrel and STX Engine-MTU Friedrichshafen engine. As of 2016 full-rate production of 120 Krabs for Polish Army has started with deliveries to be completed by 2024. As of 2019, Huta Stalowa Wola started using barrels of their own manufacture in successive production batches.

The part about modern Western artillery that I think is most amazing is that you can fire two or more rounds of different trajectories and they all land at the same point and the same time. The enemy doesn't know what's coming when it's coming, and he can't run away when everything around him blows up. It's amazing that any Russian wants to fight in Ukraine anymore.
Pacifico Studios
Pacifico Studios 6 ай бұрын
@Ribbitgoesthedog Lastnamehereyeah Right! "First Shot-First Kill." Most people don't realize the huge difference between war today and WWII. You think of those huge barrages at El Alamein, Normandy, Caen, or Iwo Jima, that had very little effect, leaving soldiers to fight bitter battles at much closer range. Monty didn't have drones and HIMARs to help him win.
Ribbitgoesthedog Lastnamehereyeah
Ribbitgoesthedog Lastnamehereyeah 6 ай бұрын
@Pacifico Studios The 10 second limit is just because of that. 90% of casualties in an artillery bombardment are caused in the first 10 seconds, and 10% after that, often regardless of the length of the bombardment. This is because soldiers, when hearing the first hit, will seek cover or run, and after 10 seconds everyone is usually in cover or dead. But in that time window, they are standing, walking, sitting, lying on the open road/field and still highly vulnerable. This is the reason MRSI was developed: Its no point in shooting soldiers in cover, so the whole firemission has to hit within that 10 seconds. Maximum damage when the enemy has no defence at all.

@Ribbitgoesthedog Lastnamehereyeah - I just saw some drone footage of the business end of a MLRS salvo and it was clear that anyone in the midst of that would think they were in hell. Absolutely nothing you can do but try to hide, or run.

Two or more. I think Finnish AMOS can fire up to 14 grenades with a Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact effect from a twin barrel launcher, depending on the range. From a unit of 4 vehicles, thats 56 grenades hitting in under 10 seconds. I can barely imagine the effect, it must be like a brraaaap from an Warthog, except with 120 mm mortar grenades.

True. I have wondered if some Russian soldiers know there are no Nazi's and don't want to kill innocents, but are forced to stay, so they fire into empty fields, just to keep commanders off their backs. I am an optimist, but it's at least plausible.

Krab uses Korean chassis with British AS-90 155mm Braveheart ( 52 calibre chambered ) turret - 'best of both'.... reliability and long range, and accurate. Krab even has British style tea making hot water unit that is standard on British vehicles, WW1 and 2 were won on 'cups of tea'...

We have ordered 120 AHS Krab till today for Polish Army. 80 delivered already - big portion of those already in Ukraine. Ukraine already ordered additional 54 new AHS (paid from external sources). Producent (HSW) is working full speed. More local orders expected soon. But we still need more - so few days ago, we have ordered 212 additional AHS from Korea (due to Korean enormous production capability). First expected soon. Orders for additional ca. 460 AHS will follow soon. Along with ca. 500 Himars they will become basis for Polish and Ukrainian artillery efficiency in near future. So definitely Krab is something to be present in Ukraine in large quantities for long time. As long as it is necessary.

Wow. That's some astonishing machinery. I'm surprised that from the outside, it is very loud, inside however, it's just a humble 'thud', almost sounds like a potato cannon, very quiet. Ukraine is not just a place that needs the support, but also a live testing ground in real combat for these various donated systems, and the western allies get to really see, how good and effective they are. It's also a testament to them to see how easy it is to master and how smart the Ukrainian military truly is, learning it quick and being so very deadly with it. Great job!

The big point of this system is it drives in, stops, fires, leaves., That means no counter battery can touch is. As well, the machine knows the inclination of the vehicle, the exact location of the vehicle, and thus you just punch in the coordinates of your target. That is likely done before they stop, tell the computer to go, then seconds later, bang. On target within 50 meters. If they have a spotter, adjust, second shot right on target. And that's with dumb shells. Add a smart shell to that, and it's done in one.

About the chassis comment is wrong.Yes is from K-9 ,but Poland rebuild the chassis to their needs and added as well 5.5 kw power generator ,that means the engine doesn't have to run and all computers and turret is powered, the British turret was aswell changed to Polish needs, same like barrel was from French Nexter and changed by Poland. They just bought good parts and made them working better. 👌And on the end is Polish Fire control system Topaz, which is one of the best now.Can hit for 30 km distance anything small even 3 meter. 17
