What a wonderful musician he was! He conducted the Halle at the first ever concert I attended in 1960, and I saw him at many concerts afterwards.

A wonderful conductor. Heard him conduct the Halle many times during the 1960s. I never heard him conduct the Tchaikovsky 4th Symphony 'live' but he made an excellent recording of the work with the Halle Orchestra. The slow movt especially is given some very imaginative treatment. He always liked to begin the Finale almost immediately after the Scherzo movt giving the shock surprise that Tchaikovsky surely intended. I heard Barbirolli conduct dramatic accounts of the 5th and 6th symphonies.
