I get some people dont know how to unplug from the electronic world but if there's ever a grid down I will find it so peaceful. No more AC units humming, no more planes over head no more cars day and night hauling by..... oh the peace it would bring.

There are +’s and -‘s to every thing for sure! Certainly finally having some peace and quiet for like… 10 minutes til some catastrophe happened due to no electricity would be a tiny + 😅gotta stay optimistic

There won’t be peace. Crime will skyrocket. The weak ones will be attacked. The prepared will be targeted. It’s going on now all over the world

Just bought an EcoFlowDelta2, with a solar panel , Colorado gets 300 days of sunshine a year , its going to be an interesting election season and i think power will be getting a lot of attention

If you are going after power solution look at hydro but not in a natural stream. Think about a 55 gallon drum that has pcv or tubing going from a water pump inside the base of the drum; start the pump via a small solar panel that charges a small battery. The line runs up the inside of the barrel and streams onto wheels, which turns a belt system to run and alternator to produce a charge for a battery bank. With a lid on the barrel the water stays contained so loss is mainly reduced to friction.

I have multiple options for everything, I have wind and solar that gets used every day, 2 backup generators , and a power station. For water ,I have a rain harvesting system with 13,000+ storage capacity, all water is pumped to tap with a 12v pumping system. For tools, I keep some backup manual tools, but most are battery operated tools, for heavy load tools, I keep a Dewalt power station to run those, including welder, all tools are kept and charged in a hurricane proof prepper shed that is 100% sustainable. For cooking I keep multiple stoves and fuels, I use propane every day, but I always have about 500lb in storage.

I went with the Anker solix c1000 and recommend it as a good combo of price and size. Added 200 watt solar panels. Less than $1000.

Heating & cooling will take up a lot more energy than you probably realize, so plan accordingly for your power needs.

I agree! And I have found the best way to address those needs is adequate insulation. Good insulation will drastically reduce the need for both.

I take issue with Washington state and solar. I’ve built my own off grid system and I’m doing quite well thank you. 25 kW of battery and 8 kW of solar panels. Victron is my favorite for an inverter and charge controllers. Nowadays, you can get an all in one inverter.

Yeah I live in a place that is normally cloudy and my solar produces enough power 99% of the time.

The problem with the bigger solar generators is that you need the bigger banks of panels to charge them. I have space for a 120W panel (apartment dweller) and with the UKs level of sun, it would take me a week to charge that 2.5kw beast 😞

One thing about lead acid batteries is that they're not susceptible to EMPs or CMEs. I think this makes them more practical for prepping. A lithium battery is useless if the BMS get fryed.

Anything that is actively using power is susceptible to EMP but sure if you have a lead acid battery stored away disconnected it will probably survive.

How do you protect them before EMP
@chupacabra304
@chupacabra304 3 күн бұрын
It’s possible to purchase or construct large Faraday cages for these types of things. If you’re really concerned about EMP’s consider looking up the EMP doctor’s channel :) he’s brilliant and covers so much excellent information and separates myth from reality

You will need an 'extra' system that's protected while using your regular system for power outages. Keep the extra system components in a faraday cage & wrap the solar panel boxes in aluminum foil while sealing the seams with aluminum tape. Be sure to test all components before sealing them up, especially the solar panels. If an EMP ever happened, wait a week or so before pulling out the 'extra back up' system as there could very well be another EMP strike to finish off those that prepared.

It’s beneficial to have multiple sources of energy, when it’s cloudy, the windmill will crank out electricity, when it’s sunny maybe both will, and when it’s a hot summer day with no breeze the solar panels will be in their element . But ideally one should have several different types of electricity generation for any environment or situation:)

I would love to share some of my ideas regarding long term energy options with you. Such things as trying to set the battery size consistent across lights, radios, etc to having a “c” cell to “d” cell adapter since hardly anyone buys c cells in an emergency to powering a pellet stove. Just general thoughts I’ve been kicking around a bit and contemplating setting up a class to teach when I retire.
