A priori knowledge such as 2+2= 4 is only knowable if taught in some way or discovered through interaction with our environment. I think this makes everything a posteriori. Even conceptually you would still require some knowlege derived from experience even if it is secondhand.

Great quality Dr. Bonevac! Maybe a soft light in front of you would add a bit more?

Good idea! I'll try it for my next one-as soon as the guys are finished fixing my deck. The sawing and hammering is keeping me from recording at the moment!

What would you say to someone who denies that a priori judgements exist? Because even mathematical truths depend on experience if you think of it; the concept of 2 depends on experience. Someone who never saw or heard or felt anything at all wouldn't be capable of grasping the idea of 2, so to know 2+2=4 you need experience.

Is A Priori, A Priori?
@PhiloofAlexandria3 жыл бұрын
Fascinating and underexamined question! I see Quine’s debate with Carnap in this light. Quine is arguing, I think, that the question whether something is analytic or synthetic is itself synthetic, and the question whether something is a priori or a posteriori is itself a posteriori.

@@PhiloofAlexandria But can a definition be equal to itself? A=A? Is it consciousness that defines experience?
@Google_Censored_Commenter3 жыл бұрын
@@couldstopwillstop A=A is what's known as the law of identity. It's not exactly a definition that's equal to itself, that would be a circular or self-referential definition, as it's called. Those are generally considered to be illogical.

As an empiricists I have to ask, how meaningful it would be to know 1 + 1 = 2 without any experience? Unless "1" "+" "=" and "2" are attached to some ideas gleaned from experience they have no meaning. Is a soul a soul or could it be another soul? How can the truth of such statements be established with out some experience with souls?

@@abdullahzafar2942 The numbers on the left side of zero correspond to the experience of loss (and probably other experiences). I didn't claim numbers had to correspond to objects. My claim was without any experience, numbers are meaningless.
