In this video spring is finally here on the farm and we are tackling some very important jobs that have been overlooked for the past few years. Our contractor is here spreading the first load of lime of the year, why do we spread lime at all???
We also let our heifers out to grass and hope they don’t gallop through our fencing!!

The rear jaw on your vice should line up with the edge of the work bench so that if you had any long lengths you would be able to secure it hanging down.... ????

For liming our fields we get a load of lime grit tipped up by a lorry . The grit is like fine gravel. We then load our disc spreader on our 35 with 3ft wide flotations with our mini digger. Are we mad? Yea a little but who doesn't like to see a 50kmph 35 with huge wheels flying across a field

Tip for spreading lime, thebbets of the lime is the fine dust which is what usually ends up in the nieghbours fields, stick a hose in the pile of like to make wet it and you'll get the best of the lime on your own fields

I've heard not to do your whole farm in one go it changes the soil structure and won't release some minerals for a period of time e.g. copper, good to do about 20% of a farm your farm every year and get back to the same paddock in about 5 year time I did whole farm once and found my cows to be copper deficient cheers Good vid tho 🙂

Lime drives Life in the ground. Nitrogen Burns through the carbon in the soil, using it up. Soil is very different now to what it was in the 50s I'm composition in Ireland. It's going to be a big problem in years to come

An inch of rain and 3 weeks of 20 degrees heat is needed on the Eastern half of the country to have a decent first cut silage. The rain is coming next week but the temperature isn't yet. Its almost a copy of last year so far, only cooler. Fodder wise It will probably be alright as long as we don't roll into a summer like 2018. 🙈

Its great stuff for maintaining the pH of the soil, best thing is to spread the normal lime and get it to the right ph then spread a small bit fo granular each year to keep it steady

They use fpt engine's now (case NH). Claas main downfall was head gaskets with the JD engine.

Well I'm part right. 400 arion and axions have fpt but 5/600 are Deere still. I had an old style 610 and head gasket went in her at 2100h but also had a first series 420cis and to be fair it was a cracking tractor so just replaced it with a new 440 with fpt engine.

I would usually want them to have a full stomach before going out so they don't eat too much grass and risk acidosis or am I doing it the wrong way round? You know my stance on the claas tractors, tried to convert you before but I got nowhere with ya 😉 if ya got one 2013 or older they have the JD engine and massey backend and no addblue, plenty grunt for 2000gal tanker
