LGD breeds are different from other dogs. You can't "show them who's boss" like other dogs. On the other hand, I've found that out thinking and being more stubborn than they are really helps! The trick is to not give up, EVER! Look into the history of your breed. They were bred by nomadic shepherds and the fact that they wandered was a benefit. They kept enlarging their territory and kept out predators. Also, if they are a cross with another breed of dog that isn't an LGD breed, you have another set of issues to deal with. That may be why he's chasing deer. You spoke of your female with pups. You may think she's getting enough to eat, but she needs the extra protein in those eggs, especially now. Let her have them.
@homesteadmississippi7108 ай бұрын
@lizhoxie7202 our dogs are pure and him chasing deer is speculation on my part. He may indeed be running coyotes off. We do give our dogs eggs and we are trying to keep up with her needs but she definitely does not need to think it's ok to go into the coop and eat them and therefore we have stopped it. We also keep a higher protein food in stock that she has been getting and it's time for the pups to get new farms. All in all.... we are happy with our GP's with only minor issues. Thank you for your comment and thanks for watching.

@@lizhoxie7202Absolutely not. Yes, LGD Are problem solvers, and they are used to thinking on their own but they can very easily be taught boundaries, and they should be. It is not okay for a dog to steal eggs- unless of course the dog is truly starving. It is not okay for a dog to kill your birds, although a dog under 2 years of age should be forgiven and given time to mature, No LGD is bird safe until at least the age of two. They need to know the rules, and stealing eggs is not okay. I don't put my hands on my dogs, luckily as tough as this breed can be against predators, they are also very soft-hearted and usually a stern voice is all it takes- A stern voice on repeat. 😅 She's eating the eggs because they taste good, not because she's starving.

You are the alpha and if the hard decisions need to be made, I know you’ll do what’s right for the whole family and farm!! Hopefully the wire fence will teach her and she’ll learn and all will be happy again!! 😉👍

Here's something that a neighbor did a few years ago, and it actually worked! He had an egg thief that he thought he was going to have to rehome because he simply could not keep her out of them. It broke the family's heart because they truly adored the dog and she was a great guardian but part of their business was selling eggs so the dog was literally eating the inventory. I don't remember if he came up with this on his own or got the idea from someone else but he finally started grabbing a few eggs and injecting them with serious hot sauce- The hottest stuff he could find. (He also made sure there was plenty of water available LOL.) He would place them around the coop and barn and let her find them, He said it only took about 3 or 4 days of her "finding" the hot sauce filled eggs before she decided eggs weren't so much fun after all and never touched them again. Just an idea, I know how frustrating it can be.

Great Pyrrs tend to roam. its their nature. Especially when they have a touring partner. We have required woven wire fencing with hot wires top and bottom for containment. If I had to do it all over again I'd have gotten Maremmas.. they reportedly dont roam as much.
@homesteadmississippi7108 ай бұрын
That's all what I'm learning too.... great dogs but they like to think their territory is 2 or 3 times the size that it is. Thank you for watching!

As I said in another comment, an off-leash Pyr is a DISApyr, lol. Regular perimeter walks with plenty of positive reinforcement definitely helps but sometimes you have a dog that just isn't going to stay home. That's when you have to get creative because a tied up LGD is completely worthless. The first thing you have to ask yourself is how old is your dog, dogs under 2 years old haven't come into their own yet, and are still learning. Have you considered a dangle stick or a yoke? I'm not particularly fond of either but you have to do something. I don't agree with a lot of the old school ways like tying a chicken to their collar to keep them out of the coop or being heavy-handed with a dog- My dogs are my partners and I would never punch a human partner so why would I smack my dog? Obviously you can't stay with them 24/7 to make sure they stay home so maybe a dangle stick or a yoke along with a hot wire and more training would help... Again, these are amazing dogs but they are so independent that sometimes you just want to scream. 😂

This breed is notorious for esecaping,same thing with the kuvas .You need an electrified fence or a chain link kennel with a cement floor and a top to the kennel.
@homesteadmississippi7108 ай бұрын
Lol.... we need them out so they can help protect the livestock..... so.... we went the electric route.... thank you very much for commenting and watching!

He needs a shelter. Guards, even the human kind, don't like their backs exposed. Build him a gunner nest in the field and he'll stay put. Look at some of the other homesteaders with LGD and you can see some great build ideas. We just have an amazon kennel that has an open door and mesh for 360 sight but give our GP the security of defense on her 6. My hubby gives a really detailed explanation of it but he did a lot of guard and patrol duty in Iraq.

Well thank you and that makes a lot of sense. We have a large shelter for all the big animals and figured that would suffice where Rufus is...... but Mollie, who was also prone to roam, we ended up putting her in the closed pen and she has a doggloo..... and she is staying put. We will get him something smaller just for him and put it out in his favorite spot..... will let you know how it works..... in fact.... you probably just gave me one of our next videos..... thank you very much!

You have to train them , they are not pets per say, these types of dogs are working dogs. The puppies need to be exposed early to the animals asap
@homesteadmississippi7108 ай бұрын
These dogs live in the pens with all of the other dogs from the day they are born with minimal human interaction other than feeding. Once they get a taste of eggs.... they will eat every egg they get a chance too, especially when they are nursing babies, you can't give them enough food! All of their energy goes straight into milk production and into those babies.... which we have 9 of if you are in need of a GP puppy. From birth they have been with goats, chickens and ducks. Thanks for watching and let me know if you need a puppy.
@MistressOP8 ай бұрын
yeah, a lot of people sell guardian dogs to folks but guardian dogs require training. lots and lots of training and if you bought an expensive puppy without training you bought a dog not a live stock guardian dog. lol Just like seeing eye dogs not all dogs want to work or know how to signal and work properly. If you bought a real dog trust me whatever you got you under paid for because real ones are expensive as hell. Livesto ck guardian dog who are untrained shouldn't be off lesh. They are dangerous to other peoples property. We had a problem with homesteaders buying them and they started breeding in the hills and attacking sheep. Just a huge problem and honestly, I wish that licensing would be pushed. Because we have hikers. Just a huge time bomb as more and more people follow trend and effect producers/ranchers/and farmers. Plus, there's also rabids and other issues. Past time for licensing.

Thank you for your heartfelt comment. I hate to hear the awful experiences you mentioned. I haven't heard of those kind of problems with Great Pyrenees. We have not paid a lot for any of ours but they are not killers nor dangerous to humans. Our biggest issue has been them eating eggs. We have heard and experienced some of the best training is having them born in the barn with the animals they are to protect and not to pet them and treat them as pets. I have several of the people who purchased our puppies still talk to us and we even visit one often, the dogs are doing terrific and the owners have been very happy. We sell without papers and very cheap. Great Pyrenees are overall an excellent dog with or without formal training. I hope you continue watching and see how well ours do and you can go back to previous videos and see how well they have already done..... no unhappy neighbors, and if we have a dog that kills other animals it does not stay on this farm....... of course that's not counting coyotes!!!

I'm new to the channel so no offense intended but is there a reason your boy isn't neutered? If you regularly breed him then I get it but with that many unspaid females, things are going to happen... Very cute cuddly things but sometimes also very unexpected things LOL.

Are you not concerned that a pup will get tangled in the leash. Why can't you wait till pups are gone. Also if she is searching for protein up hers and give her eggs so she won't need to go get them. Also she may need calcium. I have had many new mommas need extra calcium. Try a few tums a day or get liquid calcium.
