America posting: Pre-school is the catch-all term for any voluntary (and often private) schooling done before school is compulsory. That's when "real" school starts, starting in what we would call Kindergarten. Under this structure pre-school and kindergarten are detached and unrelated, they don't get the same moniker as they don't exist in the same space. There's the added nuance though that "Pre-K" / "Pre-Kindergarten" does exists as a subset of pre-schools, where they are run and funded by public schools. These programs could totally get away with calling it junior and senior kindergarten, it's all the same place. They probably won't though. The catch is Pre-k is still voluntary, and because many states don't offer it univerally or even at all as it isn't guaranteed federally. Pre-K is just a bonus stage you get to go to if your state is chill and your parents love you, if you don't have fuck-you money for something private.
