A Purely Aesthetic Mod: How To Desnork (Desnorkle) Your Cayman

One of the more common mods is to remove the intake baffle plate (AKA "Impact Protection Element" in Porsche-ese), commonly known as "desnorkling" or "desnorking". Absolutely no performance gain, but many people say they really like the increased intake sound.

I took the factory piece and drilled a hole pattern in it that mimicked the red plate. Just a free way to do this if you want the same overall effect.

Great timing on uploading this series, these are projects I wanted to tackle this weekend ironically! I bought a very similar 3D printed Desnork grill from a fellow youtuber a couple months ago. Hope it helps reduce water ingress

My thoughts is that you know have more air restriction with the red printed cover than the original baffle. The honeycomb pattern blocks perhaps 5% or more of the actual intake.

Youre not going to gain HP while standing still on a dyno but while moving you will get more air forced into the intake. This mod does give you more power.

Correct ! I removed the impact plate and installed 3 mm screen to the back of the frame structure with epoxy for full airflow and no debris entering the airbox. I also installed a K&N air filter, IPD plenum, 82 mm TB, cat HJS headers and a race cat back exhaust system on my Gen 2 (2010) Caymans S. To get the most out of it, this is what you do.

@@positivesecret Yess, I saw that comment already. The car in motion and its aerodynamics are more of an issue than tiny power gains. There are also other ways to test, like tufting, testing edge treatments, etc. That stock intake has been shown to be pretty efficient as far as aerodynamics goes. I would not modify it for more assumed power without considering possible changes to Cd or to aero at and after the wheel. Removing a grill or an inserted radiused edge can change both. Thus, testing.

Hey Cliff, congrats for the videos and tutorials. Wonderfull job! Have you ever tried to find or replace yours Cayman fuel filter? Some say that it is inside the fuel tank and does not need replacement (it is lifetime). I am confused, because I would like to replace it as a preventive maintenance, but could not find any specific tuturial for the 2010 3.4L Cayman S, 987.2. Thanks in advance for any help.

You actually didn’t remove the snorkel. It’s the ovalised tube that you exposed. You pull it out, then reinstall the grill and subframe. Trust me, you’ll hear the intake without the snorkel.
