An Oligarchy, with a suggestion box... With so few owning so much it is difficult to imagine a representative democracy. ○Discouraged from collective bargaining with employers. ○Forced to buy products from corporations that sue to weaken then purchase their competition. ○Often we are stirred by fearful news coverage that seeks obscure only to increase ad revenue. - Informed consent? It is Russia's reliance on the ethnic minorities in rural areas to fight the war that could lead to countless terrorist organisations springing up. People saying our sons died so that those in the Kremlin could enrich themselves further. Victories will always unite countries but a stalemate or defeat and people will ask what was this war all about, our sons died for nothing. The key question can anyone fill the vacuum of power that will arise in 2025.

Absolutely correct. Putin cannot afford to conscript too many people from Leningrad/Moscow and the other big urban centres, else he'll have rebellion. His power depends on these people remaining reasonably happy and well-off. But, by deppleting the ex-centered republics and the countryside, he is also creating rebellion. He probably thinks it does not matter because it is all too far from him and cannot touch him, and I believe/hope he is wrong. Already, there are dissenting voices (Bashkorstostan for example).

What influence do the two largest economies China, United States have on the number and quality of weapons supplied to both sides? If armaments are supplied slowly and in small amounts Russia will win by attrition. Will the west be any more eager to quickly spend the trillions necessary to rebuild Ukraine? Only those alive during the 1960's Cuban Crisis, will remember how close the U.S. and the world came close to a nuclear war? We were at Defcon 2? There was a Russian nuclear sub. underwater near Cuba with missles unable to contact the Kremlin for orders but being pinged to death by U.S. destroyers whose Captain decided to surfaceand not launch that saved the world. That unnamed man had the forethought to surface to see what was going on? It's not up to Putin but the man on the button after Putin gives the order. As for Putin, I don't think he cares for his children or grandchildren? If he says to Putin FO Iam not launching as I want Russia to live! One person who we don't know just like that Captain of that Sub.? AS OF 01/15/2024 WE ARE AT DEFCON 3. Last time we were at DEFCON 2 was during Operation Desert Storm? The "Blitzkrieg" was devised by the Germans, the roles of the infantry, mobile units, airforce all combined to deliver a shock onto enemy troops. Putin on the other hand used the Russian ideology, mass numbers, it didn't work, that strategy died in 1945 as the Soviets realised that they could not win with numbers alone, they needed allies. In February 2022 Putin started his own version of Unternehmen "Barbarossa", and like Hitler he has had his own "Stalingrad", he has lost this war, and Russia is left crippled.

Nope wrong and a massive oversimplification. Blitzkrieg was developed by the German generals who in turn were defeated by the Russian generals. The German generals also wrote most of NATOs tactical doctrine. Last two years of WW2 is the key especially the Soviet destruction of army group centre. Operation Bagration
@thegreatkimber3777
@thegreatkimber3777 2 күн бұрын
@@stu281 The Blitzkrieg against France was a fortunate coincidence. The german army did not plan it as such. They prepared for years but did not expect to be that successful. Russia had a lot of help from other countries to win at the russian front. Sure, the german army was not able to hold it, but without US trucks and other equipment it would have been impossible to push them back that fast and that far. The german tactical doctrine may have been influential in the young NATO, but a lot of time is gone by since that. Plenty of wars have been fought, new doctrines have been developed since that.

If Putin humbles himself and agrees that it was not in Russia's best interest to occupy any other country who wants their independence and freedom... then he could state that the best future for Russia is to make peace with the whole world and ask them to remove their sanctions and once again buy Russian oil and products. Then he would gain the respect of his countrymen and the rest of the world. This would take a greater man to admit to being wrong, but would bring the people of Russia to once again be behind him... It is up to him...

I agree Putin will be at his most dangerous when his regime (and by extension, his life) is at risk. I have no concern for Putin, but I am not one of those people that sees his weakening grip on power as a 'good' thing. Nothing at all can be ruled out when considering the list of things he is willing to do to stay alive and in power. For example, Putin would surely use a nuclear weapon to create global chaos if it meant he could stay in power one more day. His track record is unambiguous in that respect. He has a long history of creating regional chaos to attempt to exploit it and profit from it. What if the only way out of this war is further in? The war with Ukraine isn't just about pursuit of his imperial ambitions. It is also about shoring up his power at home. Can it really be argued he would never use a nuclear weapon to shore up his power at home? I agree that things would have to be very dire for him, but we are now in a position to see, for the first time, a path to things getting that dire for him, and I think it's worth examining the new possibilities that opens up.
@ecaeas4439
@ecaeas4439 2 күн бұрын
There might be a "safe" way to get rid of Putin that doesn't involve the scenarios you've discussed, but I don't think that it's a remotely realistic possibility. A sort of lightningly fast coup with all the state apparatus on-board (especially the intelligence services), would stop Putin from being able to see any danger coming and seeding chaos to protect himself, but who in Russia is influential enough to organise such a difficult operation? Anyone in Russia that has ever had people power or organisational power has been culled or disarmed by Putin's regime - he's effectively removed all individual threats to his regime. The only thing left to challenge him is gradually changing attitudes that may ultimately lead to some kind of revolt. There's no Putin dynasty to take over really; he has children, but he has strictly sidelined them instead of preparing them for a transfer of power after he's gone. So I do agree ultimately with the message you're getting across. Putin's eventual fall will be messy and potentially catastrophic. Even if there's some kind of revolt by the russian people (which is unlikely after the decades of propaganda and apathy), Putin will find a way of dragging his ideological and Russia's imaginary conflict with the west to preserve his power. Very sad and concerning.

Thanks, Professor Tim. Now I have more things to worry about. We should be careful about what we wish for. I listened to a podcast about Ukraine drone production. The retired engineer and his group of volunteers had developed designs for a drone that could kill tanks. With that program and others, hidden Ukraine mini factories will produce about a million drones next year -- at a materials cost of about $500 each. That was how he described his tank killer project. His pride in perhaps helping save Ukraine was admirable. Applause. Applause. But -- I live in the USA. Here, some grade school kids get guns for birthdays or Christmas as soon as Dads and Moms think they should be ready to hunt. Gun manufacturers target youth in ads with small guns. The result -- we have more guns than people. Millions of us have WAY more than $500 worth of guns in our collections. There are many tinkerers and craftsmen who lovingly make their own beautifully designed guns and other weapons. Since I heard about the $500 tank killing drone, I have been wondering how many are already in basements around my country. When will we hear about the clever grade schooler who sends a drone to school instead of taking a gun there? I think it's inevitable.

I draw your attention to the concept of "nervnyi lyudi" (literally "nervous people" but there are contextual and idiomatic resonances beyond that). An age old idea but one greatly amplified and refined during certain periods of the USSR and raised to fever pitch by Putin. It's savagely simple - keep the population chronically fearful, suspicious and needy and they effectively police and terrorise themselves. In so doing they obey without particularly knowing why and they're too busy tearing shreds off each other to be a threat to the regime. Sadly, we're witnessing the psychological brutalisation of roughly three generations of Russians (and connected others) and not for the first time. Human beings become accustomed to coping with constant anxiety on a conscious level, but deep down it changes you, robs you, makes you harder that you naturally are, want to be or should be.

‘a leader grasping for relevance’ - nice! I agree that Russia is cornered, but we cannot counter this with fear on our side. We need to remain principled in order to save our own identity. There are too many forces that try to divert us from our dearest values (and I expressly want to state that I don’t mean specific left-wing political ideology with these values).

Remember the result of US insistence on Germany paying impossible reparations following the Armistice after WW1? Hitler, for a while, united Germany, created a dynamic industrial country then tried to overtake Europe. More effective to stabilize Russia and Russians would be to provide redevelopment support and less finger pointing. They, the Russians, have endured more than 100 years of totalitarian control, a mindset which will take generations to to change and the patience of the west to support and not to blame. It is one man who started this war, not the people per se'.

Last night I got a translation of the Russian national anthem and was struck by the words." Republics welded by Russia into a unbreakable Soviet Union" that made me wonder if Putin takes that seriously and thinks war in Ukraine is just putting down an internal rebellion?

Thank you for this excellent summary. Tim, you did not address the most critical (my observation) component. The Russian mentality. The Russian population have, for generations, surrendered their individualism. They completely accept their position as serfs. This acceptance cannot be changed. Whether Putin is alive or dead matters not.

Unlikely, one of the best locks on Pandora's box is that the low level grunts who actually push the buttons are loathe to actually carry out their assigned responsibility of opening the box. I can't recall the exact figures but when drills are ran it's fairly normal for a majority of a nation's deterrence forces to refuse to turn the keys and launch, at least until they have adequate information about the situation confirmed through multiple sources. The leader/s can give the order all they want, the military still has final command authority over the arsenal, and there's almost always someone in the chain that goes, "Yeah, no. We're not gonna do that."

He is teetering on the abyss. It's time for his oligarch supporters to give him a nudge. No doubt his oligarchs will have safely stashed their ill-gotten gains by now and can live happily ever after. Then again, why should they bother. The question is, who is still keeping him teetering on the edge? What still needs to happen for someone to give him that nudge? Maybe everyone around him sees that it is in their own benefit to keep him on that edge for as long as possible, and so no action will be taken until some other external force gives him that nudge to just get over this and start anew.

@@SM-mb5kqThe circle of oligarchs that rule Russia, one of whom is the most likely candidate to replace Putin after he falls, really don't care about it's future as a country. The oligarchs are set up to survive the collapse, so they won't care as long as they can keep making money scamming Russia's people into believing dangerous myths about the world to distract them from the vast scale of corruption going on in their country.
