f(x,y) = x^log(y) is commutative in the same was as f(x,y) =xy is, therefore it did look like it is symmetrical.

Equations are symmetrical because a^log(b) = b^log(a) assuming a,b > 0 and stuff like that.

At least this wasn't so obvious, and required some work. Take the common log of both sides to get log x + log y = 6 and (log x)(log y) = 3. Let u = log x, and log y = 6 - u. You get a quadratic. u = 3 ± sqrt(6) = log x, and log y = the other. Checking it is lowly non-trivial, but still non-trivial.

My solution (of course way faster): same beginning, we take the log of both equations and we obtain: (log y)(log x)=3 and (log x)+(log y)=6. Then (log x) and (log y) are the two solutions of the equation: u²-6u+3=0 (Vieta's formula). Delta'=9-3=6. The solutions are 3+sqrt(6) and 3-sqrt(6). log x=3+sqrt(6) => x=10^(3+sqrt(6))=1000.10^(sqrt(6)). log x=3+sqrt(6) => x=10^(3-sqrt(6))=1000/10^(sqrt(6)).

Nice solution, you can also substitute x = 10^a and solve for a - it immediately gets rid of the logarithm and leads to the same quadratic equation

i just tried to solve this by the thumbnail, assuming that log=ln, in that case the numbers are way weirder: x=1000^(3ln(10)+sqrt(9ln(10)^2-3ln(10)))^-1 and y=1000*e^(sqrt(9ln(10)^2-3ln(10))). Thank god this was not the actualanswer :)
