I really need to go back to Tantallon and explore inside, hopefully in the summer. I didn't get to Auldhame, how easy was it to get to?

What a massive and impressive castle! Unfortunately it suffered the same fate as many castles that were bombarded (or slighted) by Cromwell. Thanks for the quick tour. Hopefully you can return another day for a look inside. Cheers!

Thanks Pete. Yep, I'm definitely going to have to return! There were several sites on our last Scotland trip where we were restricted to viewing from a distance, so will definitely be going back!

I decend from Field Marshall Sir George Douglas-Hamilton born 1666. Everyone you described in this video is our ancestor. It's hard to wrap your mind around sometimes. There are multiple lines decending from James the IV via his daughters Margaret and Catherine Stewart as well

I find it fascinating when people are able to trace back their lineage to specific people in history. Thanks so much for watching!

I always wonder what the landscape would look like if so many castles weren't destroyed!

It's a good job that even the ruined ones are protected now, as they were so often used as quarries when they fell out of use. Saying that, I still prefer ruins to intact castles! 😂

I come from North Berwick, I used to metal detect all over the castle and surrounding areas when it was closed to the public. Never found anything worth having….they must have been a very poor lot back then. Lol.

That's really interesting. I could imagine that the settlement outside of the walls would have been pretty poor. Maybe archaeologist have already recovered everything inside?

@@relicsruins , this was before modern day detectorists. It was around 1978…nobody knew about metal detectors back then , I was the first and only in my area for around 5 years. It was great fun, thanks for the memories mate.

@@richardlove4287 Wow, a pioneer then! If there was anything there, you'd have found it.

@@relicsruins , I know where there is a very large non ferrous signal actually in the grounds of the castle, but I couldn’t dig it up as it’s under a flagstone. I did some research on the subject and it was common practice to bury a sceptre under the foundation cornerstone of a new castle. It could still be there.
