A "Getting Started: Battlefleet Gothic" video would be super cool

I like that you make tutorials, let alone tutorials of the other games than simply the main. I genuinely wouldn't have much of a clue about the practicalities of 30/40K without these videos, so thank you

The battlecruiser type of ship has always been a fascinating design in my opinion, because it's a tale of a ship design going from conception to reality, and then seeing this brand-new design being twisted and turned. The Germans, for example, concluded that the only ship that could catch and fight a battlecruiser was another battlecruiser and that in an engagement between the two it would the ship with the better armour that came out on top, and so a heavy main armament was not as important as the speed to bring the ship to battle and the armour to help her survive it. There's also the point, although not meant to be in the line of battle, the displacement, size of guns and the sheer cost of them convinced or pressured commanders to put them there, even if it was never Admiral Fisher's original intention. Regarding battleships within the Imperial Navy, the major difference is that doctrinally the Navy makes no distinction between the battleship and the carrier, and so focuses purely on the expectation of said ships; that expectation being that they should stand in the line of battle directly against the enemy, which inevitably ends poor for the lighter-armoured battleships, like the Emperor, who depend on their strike craft to form the bulk of their firepower. With the Battle Barge, I think the key difference with them is that, unlike the ships of the Imperial Navy, one of the main roles of the battle barge is to land, support and recover Astartes from planets. In a not so secondary capacity it also needs to function as a flagship for Space Marine task forces and as a HQ and operations centre for planetary landing operations. With all these other functions in mind, it's no surprise that the battle barge sacrifices firepower to do so.

Great video, and I really wish they'd bring back BFG, ideally at a larger scale so it'd be easier to customise and convert ships to make them more your own.

Net video man! I love the BFG stuff and I love that you put in a lot of real history in there as well. I dream every day of a new Battlefleet. Why can't GW capitalize on the success of their licensed video games is beyond me. I'm sure that when it's finallybrought back it's gonna be set in the Heresy and I'm already disapointed about that.

Hi Macca, ever thought about doing a video on how 30k/40k warships could work with real space physics? Thought it might be interesting with your engineering background, but obviously that's just a suggestion. Cheers!

I finally figured out that drawn out, low groaning sound at the start of these videos! Its the fanbase groaning and moaning! XD

Yes, more specifically people said that we always moaned and complained early on, so I took the logical step of making it our intro by overlaying several zombie and horror beats.

Have you played Blood and Plunder? I find it fascinating and the ruleset lets you transition from naval to amphibious to land fighting seamlessly. It also has a great scale up battle system for bigger actions.

Guess the Grand Cruiser would be to a Battleship what a Pre-Dreadnaught was to a true Dreadnaught. Slower, different armor layout, different/reduced armament.
@TheOuterCircle4 жыл бұрын
Kind of, more like a Dreadnought or super dreadnought next to a fast battleship.
@jlawsl4 жыл бұрын
@@TheOuterCircle Aren't the Grand Cruisers as slow as battleships in this game? I could always remember having to keep my cruiser line at a slow speed to keep my Grand Cruiser in the gun line. I loved that ship. That was original BF Gothic. Even after I got a Despoiler, the Grand Cruiser was my favorite ship. That aside, perhaps the grand cruiser, being slower then a cruiser, faster then a battleship, lighter armor then a cruiser, with the hitting power of a battleship...its a battle cruiser.
@thestabbybrit47984 жыл бұрын
Also, according to BFG Heavy Cruiser is a distinct class of Cruiser, but rules wise there is no difference between a Heavy Cruiser and a Battlecruiser, so I have no idea why this term exists.
@TheOuterCircle4 жыл бұрын
Many ships are given various names, Galleon, Galleas, Frigate, Corvette etc. By using logic and looking at the specs of a ship, I then subcategorise them into one of these classes. Heavy Cruiser/Battlecruiser being the same thing? Well, that's just a Battlecruiser then.
@thestabbybrit47984 жыл бұрын
The best explanation I can think of is that Heavy Cruiser is an archaic term from the Great Crusade / Heresy era, which the Traitor Legionaries still use. Hence, the Chaos Fleet have Heavy Cruisers, and the modern Navy have Battlecruisers.

21 Gloriana class ships. What’s the source on that? We know that each legion had at least one. The word bearers had 9 during the invasion of Ultramar. Sons of Horus had 2 if i remember correctly. Death guard had most capital ships, but its possible they were mostly battle barges. The imperial fists had the biggest fleet, but could be mostly small ships. Source on the word bearers is the forge world book 5 tempest in the first chapter.
@danielred54704 жыл бұрын
There is no way The Word Bearers have 9. 21 is what you get when you account each legion getting one ship and the extras being Beta( Alpha Legion), Chronicle of Ash/ Lex Talonis (Word Bearer/ Ultramarine) and the Magna Tyrannis( Sons of Horus). Source? Lexicanium
@OzymandiasRex4 жыл бұрын
The Alpha Legion had 2: the "Alpha" and the "Beta" I believe. Everyone else had 1 and the Word Bearers had themselves 3 "Abyss" class kingships built which were even larger. Others like the Terminus Est were very large unique vessels but were not Gloriana class.
@TheOuterCircle4 жыл бұрын
He is correct in the chapter in question stating that they have 9 Gloriana. However there are a few things to point out here and why I do not include them in my list. For a start, the authors have got the facts wrong multiple times, see C.S Goto and multi lasers. This is a trivial point, because when we look at the rest of the paragraph, it leads with: "The fragments are lost, but it is believed their force contained over 100 capital ships including 9 Glorianas and 3 Abyss class warships." It also furthers this by saying that these were mostly ships from other legions, naming Fidelitas Lex (the Word Bearers Gloriana) and Conqueror (Angron's Gloriana). These ships were 'spotted' over the course of the entire war, with Furious Abyss dying alone over Macragge at the start of the conflict. I dare say the force includes ships captured from the IInd and XIth legions, as well as possibly additional ships they constructed in secret to a similar spec like the Abyss class Mary Sue) and ships taken from loyalists. Being that the stories are also told by the classic "unreliable narrator" to cover up shonky editing and fact checking, I dare say they had a few but not the original 21. I hope this is a good answer.
@hoyer4 жыл бұрын
@@TheOuterCircle Thanks everyone for your answers. In the same part they say that they also had captured loyalist ships from Istvaan. Is it possible that they captured a loyalist Gloriana there? Is it also possible that the legion fleets have been up scaled like they did whit the legion armies. From legions in the 10 000 to legions in the 100 000 men in strength. At the moment there are 21 named ships. Whit sons of Horus, alpha legion and world bearers having 2. Did the emperor have a Gloriana class or did he have somthing bigger? Not trying to provoke any of you, and take this the right way, i think you are more concrete then forge world.

hoyer I believe he had a huge golden warship (unknown class, but it dwarfed other large imperial ships)that was named The Imperial Dream in Latin.
