all this time i thought perspective grids were the boring math part of art i wanted to pretend didnt exist so i ignored it, but knowing it can come so naturally off of your pic's focal point, and that it's like secondary to composition, just changed the whole game for me

That kid is one lucky dude. The biggest aid to learning anything is having an attentive and knowledgeable mentor. The patience and care shown to this student will hopefully spur him on to want to discover more. I wish my teachers had been half as inspiring as Mr Johnson.

I am going to be watching this on sporadic repeat for a while, I can tell. Probably the most liberating perspective strategy I've ever seen.

I'm stunned at the simplicity and grace you were able to explain this. Countless books and classes never gave me such an honest and massive "ah hah" moment as this short video. Thanks so much!

Finally a practical breakdown! You add *just* the right amount structure to intuition - too little is messy, too much is boring. Thank you for making this! ✌️

10 point divider is super helpful but not strictly necessary, just have to be able to do basic math, takes a bit longer, etc

this is excellent Daniel! ive been struggling with perspective for 40 years and with this quick video its a lot more clear to me how you pros approach it! also, i died a little inside when your student didnt know who Lee Weeks was! ive been a fan of his since his run on Daredevil in the early nineties.

This is one of the best videos on how to setup and use dynamic 3 point perspectives online. No other resource that I can think of shows how to do it quite as easily or fluidly. The way you can split up the grid is something I saw and understood for the first time from your streams. Even though that info exists in books, it's far easier to understand when seeing it demoed. Great video. I feel like I have understood these concepts for a while but I still have a hard time narrowing down to the exact camera angle and focal length I want for a scene.

8:31 There's a drafting tool called a "Point to Point" that can be used to draw grids in a similar manner traditionally (i.e. non-digital). I think DWJ used a version of that or a similar tool in the past.

Just such good video. Functional perspective done quickly and with room for your imagination to fill in the gaps is the best. This is an absolute gem of a video. I'll be trying that loose point to point idea to get things feeling real enough but not laborious. I always struggle with drawing longer lens shots and I think this will help the most. Wide angle always feels easier because the point are closer I guess

1) So do you make new perspective grid for every panel in the comics? 2) do you need a new perspective grid for each robot body part? (Ie chest vs forearm vs a leg turned at a weird angle?) 3) I mostly get why one would use a 1 point perspective grid - for looking straight down or up. What determines using a 2, 3, 4 point or more perspective?
