This is something i've been struggling with recently. I'm quite a new player (2 years) I've been pulled up on more than a few occasions by our MD for "floating" my fingers too high above the valves when I play. I have reasonably long fingers and I play a baritone horn; I've been hooking my thumb underneath the top loop as i'd found that was the most natural placement as I play with more flat fingers. It was suggested that instead I hook my thumb under the lower loop instead so the extents of my 'grip' is more shallow and my fingers stay on the valves, but i've found this seems to affect my accuracy quite a lot. I wondered if you had any tips of ideas about what to do with your thumb for different grips or anything like that? Thanks. Incidentally so glad you started doing informative videos, i've followed you since I switched from baritone to euphonium for a while and enjoyed your playing. Keep it up, the world needs more brass playing! :D
