Great. Thanks! Been driving a '88 Westy since '96. 360k+ miles. It's been quite an education. Learned about the telescoping oil spout last year.

Very grateful for this video. I’m building a 1991 Vanagon tin-top on my channel and this was very informative. Mine didn’t come with an engine so I’m learning as I go along. Thank you! 🙂 I’ll be watching this over and over as I continue my build. 🤙🏼

Thanks for the tour. I'm having chronic problems with my 87 Vanagon. Motor is fine, but there are electrical issues that cause the motor to cut out (die) while driving. I've had it serviced so many times (and by authorized VW dealers), I'm almost at the end of my rope. They will repair it and it will work for awhile, and then back to the same old problem. Well, maybe this comes with the territory of having this beloved hobby :-(
@VanAgain4 жыл бұрын
Intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose. Usually this is either the Distributor or the ECU. Have you replaced these?
@2Uahoj4 жыл бұрын
@@VanAgain Thanks a lot. My mechanic replaced the "Ignition Distributor sensor" (link below) which helped for awhile, but now the vehicle is back to problematic starting and intermittent engine cutting out during driving. He now thinks it could be the Digifant system - is that the same as the ECU ? The problem I've noticed with VW authorized service in Europe is - besides the fact that they are terribly expense - they don't take a holistic approach to repair. They find one thing wrong, repair it, then call to say the vehicle is repaired. Then it works for a while, but back to the same issue a few months later. www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B07PK1QX7M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What's that rusty brown large part at the back (rear near interior) of the engine? This info is exactly what I need. I bought the Bentley for my '87 1.9L Westy. Problems now eithmit firing up. Turns over. Won't start. Looks looks oil(is oily covering) on that large rusty brown part.

Thank you for this info, Ken. We bought a 90 Westy less than 2 yrs ago, and I'm still learning about it. I'm sorta new to the Vanagon engine. I would like to put Sea Foam into my crankcase to try to get the most of the original engine. I've done it on my 70 bug, and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. In the 2.1 engine, where do you actually pour the Sea Foam? People have said the "vacuum line", but I'm not sure which one that is. Any guidance would be great. Thank, again!
@VanAgain5 жыл бұрын
I have never used Sea Foam in the waterboxer. Not sure if it is a good idea or not. If you were going to use it, You should be able to add it to the intake boot, then start the van and it would suck it in. Just a small amount at a time though.

Ken, what’s your take on recharging the AC units in our vans. I know they can be converted to use environmentally safe refrigerants, but I don’t know how to tell if my van has been converted or not. I’ve heard mixed reviews re: Redtek. Thanks as always for a nice clear and helpful video.
@VanAgain5 жыл бұрын
I actually did a video on this channel all about that. You should be able to find it pretty easy.

Ken,how much would a air flow meter affect idol? Also I would be a cool video to show the differences in the 1.9,2.1 and a Subaru conversions.
@VanAgain5 жыл бұрын
The air flow meter should have no effect on the idle unless the boot is loose where it is clamped to the AFM.
@johnkempf18085 жыл бұрын
@@VanAgain thanks.Still can't get it to idle right.Thought a rebuilt AFM would help

Show crankshaft and camshaft timing position marks
@VanAgain Жыл бұрын
Crankshaft marks are on the main pulley. Camshaft timing can only be seen with the engine apart.

A shop pried off the crankcase ventilation cap and dumped 5 pints of oil down it then placed that cap on and sent us on our way for a road trip. They had no idea to look behind the license plate. It runs awful now They claim adding oil through the crankcase would cause any damage…what’s your opinion? Thanks
@VanAgain Жыл бұрын
It probably didn't hurt anything except possibly overfilled the oil and made a vacuum leak with the broken vent valve top. Check to see if your oil level looks beyond full. If so drain out a little and check again until it is between the marks. If it was overfilled then you may have fouled spark plugs that need to be cleaned. Get a new crankcase vent valve from us and replace that. That should fix the rough running.
