Exactly. Also, importantly IMO, the family is mixed deaf and hearing - an all deaf family couldn't hear danger and an all hearing family couldn't communicate the way this one can.

The idea of having a deaf character was so smart. Because imagine it. It's like her perfect world and her worst nightmare all in one. Nobody can make a sound so she doesn't have to feel left out about not being able to hear things or being hearing. But not hearing things she also can't hear if she makes a sound which can be extremely dangerous.

@Esoteric Groyper I don't think it was a flaw. They just didn't want you to focus on things like that. A Quiet Place was about the family and their struggle in the world they now found themselves living in. Yeah, it's fun for us all to speculate on stuff like this now. But at the time and especially when watching the movie for the first time, you can tell they just wanted people to focus on what they were seeing. Having discussions about alien armor vs .50 cal machine guns is fine, it just wasn't the intent of the first movie.

Ironically, the urge to nitpick the scenario (I feel it too) is because the movie is so good. Almost all genre films have huge holes -- at least as large as the very real holes in this. Handguns have 1000 bullets and are as accurate as sniper rifles. Tires are indestructible. People are barely slowed down by crazy injuries. The physics of jumping and explosions and such. OMG. Sound in space. Fire in space. Everyone knows many of their favorite films are outright ridiculous. But Quiet Place feels so real and honest in some ways that we feel it as a real world and thus expect real world logic and consistency.

Sinking in grain/corn is very much a real thing. Because they were standing up straight, their weight allowed them to sink. If you look at the steel door, it wasn't sinking because it was flat and its weight was being distributed over a bigger area.

They don’t hear everything all the time. It’s just like how we hear multiple things at a time. The loudest thing may hide quieter sounds. They have a sand down to deaden the sound. But it still makes sound. Also these thing a roaming in their territory. They may not be in range. And we don’t know their range. The only part of the movie that was silly was the snapping but she could have just gotten lucky. And the family had an advantage that they had a deaf daughter that they knew how to communicate. Also it was day 89 at that start of the movie guys. That’s not a lot of time. Like when you guys say what about a city. When they first got here they probably just slaughtered anything that moved. They could have cleared a city really quickly how they move.

27:30 - What a lot of people don't get about this movie - It's not about being 100% silent all the time, it's about minimizing risk. Sometimes you have to take a risk, sometimes you don't. They don't talk in whispers because there isn't a good a reason to risk it. Sure it might be convenient, but is it worth risking death? Their footsteps when running would make some sound but they run only in situation where they feel like they have to take that risk. They also spread sand all over common paths to reduce sound and you can actually learn to run/walk with less noise if you practice it enough.

It’s amazing how any fun in the reaction immediately evaporates whenever Rick finds shit to complain about. We don’t need to know all of this background info, because if we did we’d get a movie like Bird Box where the more that’s explained, the more plot holes open up. A Quiet Place generally works because we don’t know what happened, only what is.

One of the key things, is that feedback sound we hear as an audience, is for us to understand whats going on. When you go back to the corn silo scene, and they show the boy, there is no sound of "feedback", only when they show the girl, or the alien. That frequency of sound would not have been weaponized as we silly humans wouldn't "hear" any sound being made.

the "why did the army not stop these things?" question can be answered the same way the book World War Z did about the Battle of Yonkers, the army are trained to kill living humans, weapons are designed to kill living humans. in world war z the army fall apart cos shooting a zombie center mass does nothing, grenades and tanks and shrappnel do nothing and the zombies just kept coming(the chapter of the audio book is on YT somewhere voiced by mark hammil, well worth a listen) and it could have been the same case here, the army were not prepared to fight these things.

Their shield can withstand a planetary explosion so the only way the army could defeat them is if they would have realized sound was their weakness early on. They supposedly killed off majority of the human and animal population in just 89 days, so I am guessing that by the time they did realize (there is a newspaper with "IT'S SOUND!" after all) it was sound it was already too late.

AS far as the military thing, we don't know exactly how many of these things there are or how they reproduce. They landed on an asteroid. Two these thing's armor are ridiculously tough considering they did not implode in the vacuum of space, much less survive the landing of the asteroid they were on. Third, even if armor piercing rounds worked, it's unlikely everyone had access to them. Fourth, it was likely chaos initially, with screaming and gun fire everywhere and if there were hundreds or thousands of them it would have been worse. The military liked would have needed weeks to figure out that these things operated on sound, considering it would have been tough to kill them. Fifth, these things were relentless, so they likely killed people in their sleep as well. So military likely died due to exhaustion. It wasn't until the population dwindled down that they started coming up with effective survival tactics.

Ricks critiques were really off for this movie which is weird as we usually share opinions on a lot of things. It almost seems like it went over Ricks head. He was looking at it like this is going to be a standalone film that never gets a sequel. It's actually an extremely poop decision for directors/producers/writers to build the world over the course of one movie/book/comic. We learn just enough about the world to be invested so they can build on it later. It's also in the perspective of one family in the entire world. It wouldn't make sense to tell you everything from this one story and would hurt chances to add further depth with successive entries into the series.

Sinking in corn thing is actually real. People get trapped in corn bins a lot more than you think. Take it from this girl from Minnesota. They also teach you in school about it in the Midwest. Like if you have had a class on grain bin safety!

I knew Rick would pointlessly nitpick the movie. The idea of dismissing this beautiful execution of sound, cinematography and suspense because you don't get why the army weren't there is ridiculous. It's even dumber than when he dismissed Battle of the Bastards because Jon Snow was a bad battle tactician (which was true to his character).

Yea, turns out Ramsey Bolton, smarter than Jon Snow. Who would have guessed? I was shocked by that revelation too.
@Steddy
@Steddy 5 жыл бұрын
Jon Snow is not supposed to be a bad tactician. He didn't become the leader of an army and the Commander of the Night's Watch by pure happenstance. He had to earn the respect and display good judgement! Poor decision-making is exclusively a season 6- TV show characteristic because D&D aren't clever enough to write a story where the characters don't make blatantly stupid decisions for conflict. It's a legit criticism and should be called out. Ramsay Bolton was also a bad tactician in that episode because the idiot met Jon's army on an open field instead of using Winterfell for defence, like any sane person would! People have opinions on a reaction channel. Suck it up!
@npe9483

@@Steddy Jon is an inspirational warrior and great fighter. At no point, however, in the series is he shown as being especially intelligent either with words or strategy. I can't be arsed to read your boring diatribe about D&D, but it made total sense that the machiavellian Ramsay Bolton would exploit Jon's hot headedness and love for his family. Whatever issues many of us have with S8 (which I hated), Battle of Bastards is a masterpiece.

I totally agree with Rick about the Battle of Bastards. It was weak. It was not the show it had been with its clever battle tactics as well as beautiful cinematography. That was what made GoT stand out from other shows... because it was witty and insanely clever. Hence, the "was". You can tell when the writers lost their touch when the only praises are "beautiful music" or "beautiful camera work".

I went to see this in the cinema and the entire audience was completely silent the whole time. The first thing I noticed about the film was an aisle of chip packets in the supermarket (obviously too noisy to eat). I'm also hard of hearing and use a hearing implant (and had hearing aids prior to that) so I walked out of this movie feeling like a superhero!

This was a very good movie, but I haven't been able to watch it more than once cause I was sad to see John go. They're working on a sequel though & I'm hoping it's just as good. Might answer some of these questions as well if it takes the approach of having them find these other pockets of people who have survived. We'll see though.

I remember seeing this in theaters while having popcorn and soda, and it was the worst thing. Every little sound in the theater could be heard everywhere, I could really only eat or drink during times of sound. I tried to eat and drink during the silent parts and tried to be real quiet, but it felt impossible.

This movie certainly has its flaws and plot holes, but I will say, as a testament to how well it built its tension, when I went to see it in the theater, not only did every action put me on edge (reaching for a doorknob, putting objects down) but the ENTIRE theater was dead silent the entire time. To the point where I felt like an ass opening the box of candy I had with me because it was SO noticeable.

It didn't help that I watched it just a week or so after I made a trip down the emergency room for something that I've been told was just a panic attack so the entire time I was watching, I had to take a few breaks to really catch my breath, and calm down. 😨😫😫
