*SPOILER* Honestly, I liked how subtle the characterisation of Joseph Quinn's character is. He's wearing this big, ill-fitting suit in the big city, saying that he's studying law because it's what he's SUPPOSED to do. Then, at the end of the film, we discover that he's secretly a talented magician with great confidence on stage. I like that the film never explicity states this, but we can infer that he's always wanted to be a magician but his family pressured him to America to pursue a steady career as a lawyer. He feels very lost in his life, and now that he has recognised the apocalypse is beginning, he feels that all paths for him are coming to an dead end. This is why he just decides to join Sam in her simple quest for some pizza. (Btw, props to my girlfriend who pretty much pointed this all out to me.)

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm surprised that Stuckmann, the number one fan of Alien, wants to know more about the purpose of these invading aliens. What did the alien want in the Alien movies? We assumed it was like a shark: It moves, it eats, and it reproduces. What is the motivation of a regular ant? I'm sure they have one, but we don't need to know it to understand the problem of them infesting your house. Threats in nature don't need a purpose. The drama comes from how this problem affects the characters beyond the primal instinct to stay alive.
@eyespy30013 ай бұрын
I mean, you kind of need to know what the ants in your house are going after in order to stop the infestation. Carpenter ants are eating your wood floors. Regular ants are going after the blueberry that fell behind your stove. If you don’t deal with those sources, you’re just going to keep getting ants.

For me, an alien in space wanting to kill you is easier to roll with than aliens invading earth (their intention is more interesting because it can be more than just killing). Having two previous movies creating the mystery surrounding the creatures and their invasion also creates an expectation of a reveal of at least something when this movie takes place at the beginning. It being a third movie of a franchise also adds to the expectation. I still enjoyed it, but I couldn't help wanting to know more.
@eyespy30013 ай бұрын
@@cokemachine62590 Sure. Agreed. However, if you make a _series_ of movies set in the same universe, in the same timeline, at some point, retreading the same plot is going to get REALLY boring. That’s why the Predator series hasn’t really produced anything good after the second movie.

Haha and the machine turning on loudly.. so the male nurse goes and turns it off and then... his shirt rips. Those writers, man

It is my favorite movie of the three and I found the characters to be even more emotionally compelling than the characters presented in the first two films. Also I felt the movie presented answers to the questions surrounding the motivation of the creatures and especially questions surrounding the man Chris refers to, even if the answers aren't 100% certain. I really love the film Pig, and like Pig this movie also moved me to tears (which I was not expecting out of an installment from A Quiet Place!) *SPOILERS* Having just gotten out of the movie, I’m going to disagree with your point on Joseph Quinn’s character. His parents being overseas is only a small part of it. During the scene in Sam’s apartment, he also mentions going to NYC for law school and says something along the lines of “It’s the one thing I was meant to do,” which implies that either he dedicated his whole life to it, or he comes from a family of lawyers. When it’s ripped away from him in seconds, he feels like he has nothing left to live for until stumbling upon Frodo by pure happenstance. I found his journey of finding reasons to keep going, even during the end of the world, really resonant.

I actually read that line, the "it's the one thing I was meant to do" line as meaning he's been a screw up his whole life, and this is the one and only thing he was supposed to do and now it's down the drain. I think either way, his character has a bit more depth and I enjoyed Quinn's performance.

He did some serious acting there weeping and narrating his inner turmoil. Seriously good stuff. 🥺

This movie was hot garbage. It wasn't "day 1" as advertised, it was a bunch of scared people trying to be quiet for 2 hrs. Where's the explosive chaos of an alien invasion?? It was over in ten minutes. Idk if you guys have low standards or if you're doing mental gymnastics to try to convince yourself it was ok. Huge disappointment.

Question for all: Did anyone else feel frustrated with the inconsistency of how sensitive the monsters were to sound? For example when the nurse manages to successfully turn of the generator with no monsters showing up, but then his shirt rips and it’s slashing time? Or in the final chase scene when Frodo is being carried down the pier by his butler, the creatures hear a can rattling over the sound of car alarms and glass and metal getting smashed and all of them turn and bolt towards them? I also noticed immediately that creatures seemingly don’t react at all to sounds caused by their own kind, which would be fine if it was explained but it is never addressed

Nothing wrong with wanting to know more about the creatures but the unknown is what makes it scary and unnerving. Knowing to much about them takes away the mystery of them. Look at the Aliens franchise, it was horrible when they gave us the backstory of Xenos. To me i like the “ if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality. This movie is a solid prequel that’s falls just a tad below the other ones. They played it safe and kept what works. I think it should be one more to where it’s still has the same tone but have it more action packed. In other words we get the last movie to be what Aliens was to Aliens. We get to see the military learn their weakness and fightback while still maintaining the horror elements…..like Aliens.

Hey don't knock aliens. I loved Prometheus and Covenant when they gave us so much backstory on the aliens and how it started from the black goo.
