One of them is, so as you might expect, the whole family learned sign language long before these events...which is why they've survived so long...?

Love this sooo much!! Fascinated by the power of sound and its amazing potential to influence particular in relation to visual narrative and storytelling. I did my University Major Project on the multi sensory potential that sound has to evoke a physical and emotional reaction/experience and how evocative it is. Also LOVE this idea of filmmakers using sound to tap into the subconscious state particularly in horror, e.g. Hitchcock. SO so excited about this radical reworking of sound in horror which for me is definitely an amalgamation of two intensely creative elements, sound and horror!!

The reason they had coincidentally already knew sign language was because the oldest daughter was deaf and they needed to know sign language to speak with her. No little person would automatically learn sign language in a day.

It's more suspense than horror. It is a good movie and almost entirely silent. I think there might be 10 minutes of dialogue in the entire film. The daughter is the only deaf character everyone else is hearing. She is also deaf in real life. Great reaction.

They are way to protective over the younger child. She’s not a baby. I’m sure she can handle a scary movie. Let the child live a little. Jesus I dint understand parents that shelter there children like that. So stupid

Steph Gibson - there are a few jump scares in it - and as someone who doesn't like horror myself, it had me leaping out of my seat, almost - but it's actually sci-fi to me, NOT horror - this isn't a movie that is in any way supernatural, and a gem of a film to see.

It is not as scary as it seems. I hate scary movies. I watched it and liked it. It was clever and good. Again, not as scary as you think.

@@samfisher3845 you got it. The father took the batteries out, but the kid was desperate for some fun, and took the batteries secretly. The movie occurs not long after the invasion, so the young child still does not quite understand how dangerous making any sound can be.

Robert roy. I wondered the same thing. The mother is a doctor and the family is very clever about how she is going to deliver the baby so the aliens can't hear them.
