I actually did this going on…..4 years now! I put myself on a “depth year” for focus…by February of that first year after not having “something” to focus on, i started to figure studies…soon my figures had no heads, so in July of that first year I focused on portraits…it was a long haul..i bought courses and books to learn properly! Now in 2022 my portraits have improved so much. Recognizable portraits! I now do them in graphite, charcoal, watercolor and pastel! I often look back at my 250 loomis heads and am amazed how far ive come. You’ve gotta put in the work! Portrait studies continue to interest me over anything else.

I watched a TedTalk about a young man who drew for 365 days. He explained that talent can be a muscle to be exercised. He showed his progress from stick figures to portraits that looked like photographs! Beautifully realistic and gorgeous. This was a revaluation for me as I was struggling with self worth. I made a goal to draw for a year. I didn't keep track I just kept saying I need to make it to April. That was 3 years. I've met so many people through my art and experienced so many new things I didn't know were possible. Thank you for sharing this video. It's short and perfectly explained. 💙

@@aliwaliyyu2982 I'm so sorry. It was more than 3 years ago. All I remember is that it was a younger man maybe late 20s, he was challenged to draw 365 days, his slideshow featured stick figures and developed into gorgeous portraits that mirrored reality. The details were amazing. It was a 10 or 12 minute video and he was speaking at a panel like a TedTalk. I've gone through TedTalks trying to find it but I don't know the title or his name. The moral was try everyday even 5 minutes and watch your talent muscle grow. Hope this helps. 💜🥰

Anyone can learn to draw in a photo realistic manner if they are willing to put in the time and effort --- this type of drawing is merely a matter of developing hand/eye coordination and as such is no different than doing pushups if your goal is to develop the pectoral muscles. Being able to draw like this does not mean that you are an artist, however.

I am 34 years old in September 2022. Out of nowhere I started to find interest in drawing and illustration, so I started to doodle, then I bought a book on illustration by Andrew Loomis, and now I am protocolling my days of drawing. I started about 56 days ago, and for the last 21 days, I drew every single day even if it was just a simple scatch for 10 min. But I am excited about where the road will take me.

Your message just may be the kick in the pants I need to recharge my own creative battery. I immersed myself in writing from 2003-08 as an emotional outlet during a very dark time. What I learned during that period opened doors for me that were previously closed and led to a dream job as an editor. I might add that another perk of this immersion was a much-needed change in attitude, mind set and outlook. The year 2017 ushered in the next phase of creative endeavors: making art. I can blame this on a short ink-on-yupo-paper tutorial and several paint and sip events. Before I knew it, my dining room had been overrun with art supplies, and I immersed myself once again. Now that I have the time and the means to create anytime I desire, there have been long stretches of...well...of nothing. I find it's either feast or famine. Much of this is a leftover byproduct of covid and lockdowns, but your idea might be exactly what I need to help even out the pathway. Thanks for sharing. Now I'm off to subscribe and browse. I hope everything I find is as eye-opening and enjoyable as my first taste...but no pressure!😀

You are spot on with this one Danny. I managed to do this to myself by accident.. I challenged myself to a month long journalling challenge on the 1stJanuary 2016 and haven't stopped. It has helped to explore techniques, improve my skills and learn many things about the way I work. without it I would not have discovered that I have a natural cycle to my creativity. Every 14th month I have to take time out and only journal when I really feel like it...or write that month instead. I often use that time on a practical craft instead, sewing, interior design, gardening etc. I also find it helpful as it is a permanent record of my life...if you need to check on when you did something or when a health problem started for instance. I was not trying to improve my skills initially, I just wanted to be doing regular art for my mental health...skill development and improvement come as a bonus because you don't realise it is happening. 6 years down the line I have a bookcase of journals which follow my journey and I am able to confirm progress and also pick up on ideas that had slipped my mind ,'cus I got ADHD distracted'..talking of which...that is enough ramble ;) Keep up the good work Danny

@kathharrison8001

@@noblethoughts4500 I found that at the end of the first month when I had completed my challenge that I wanted to do it again. I vary things by picking topics or taking part in challenges like inktober( don't do that one any more tho) or spending a month doing urban sketching. Earlier this year I completed 4 collage journals.. cos I was having a blast. If I am not enjoying a topic I just change it. I find it helps with my ADHD as there is always something else I can try or go back to playing with...and past journals can be a great source of inspiration. It is now an essential part of my health routine and I carry a journal and pen almost everywhere with me;)

I like your advice. I find myself creating art work when ever I can on my phone. It's not difficult to get into doing something for a few minutes here, or there. You do create more when you put things down. It doesn't become a burden if you enjoy what you do. If you feel stagnant take a break. Art shouldn't be a chore. It should be fun. It shouldn't be an obligation either. This is when you head into problems, because you won't want to do it. Enjoy your art. After all it's your creation why rush yourself.

This is the same word I heard from God when praying about my art effort, as I take my last 2 classes for an art degree- 1 art history class at a time. I want to develop my art style, but kept being held back. I prayed & then read a daily Word (in Bible based devotions with a life application/ or similar resources), & amazingly, it was a perfect Word. It spoke about creativity, with encouragement to enjoy your work; & to go out in nature, & to play like a child; not worrying about outcomes; & creativity flowing under such conditions. I appreciate points made in this video, like- "Did you already try for a month...?".. "try for 2 years." This talk was a great reinforcement. I had 1 year in mind. I'm liking the idea of 2 years... I can feel pressure melt away. I also love that you urge consideration of what would you really LIKE to draw (or paint, etc). What do you feel drawn to do? See you in 2 years. You are awesome.

Thanks Danny, love the enthusiasm of the guy singing in the shower! Ha..I just inherited loads of high end paper from a neighbor who moved, so more serious drawing for me soon. I learned to play the mandolin-spent just 15 minutes 2x a day consistently. After 2 years I got pretty good playing short songs. A neighbor outside chatting to another heard me playing and later told me he thought it was a recording I had on my CD player..I’ve already gone through much growth with my visual art, but had an injury that limited me. I’m now working on that with changes like healthier food and physical therapy. I appreciate your talk here, so timely, thank you so much for a reminder of what I have know and experienced. It’s a matter of time I’m back up and running as I was..Also, I’ve found learning isn’t a straight path upward, it’s not linear. Stick with it-that’s important, even if you have some regressive moments/frustration. The light bulb moments of better clarity will come, then the next plateau, etc..on and on. Once you improve you’re appreciation for what you’ve done will surely deepen and propel you further onward..

I garden, take care of a handicap pet, listen to audio books, walk, pray, nap, get uniform quality sleep, check in on elderly neighbors, attend church (inspiration), have conversations, contact shut ins for newsy updates for them, paint (anything), on & on. Saved my life. Peace and joy came. .

This is an iteresting challenge, I always struggle between being creative just for fun and at the same time thinking I should practice more certain techniques to have "better art". I know I should tackle art in a free, fun, more spontaneous way, but is hard, because I´m constantly comparing myself with artists that clearly have spent hours and hours honing their skills....Maybe this will help me approach art the same way as I view other hobbies and at the same time improve and maybe one day finally have my own style even!

In the middle of listening to you, I said, "I could kiss you!"😂 I have been trying to overcome inertia for going to find a sketchbook and a journal all July [and years before] because I'm finally in a time and space to start..but do you think I could do it? Thankyou. I'm going on that hunt, right now.

Thanks so much, Danny. I'm returning to art after several years' hiatus, and have been having trouble getting started actually making marks on the page, despite the ideas being clear in my head, resources and supplies ready and waiting. Had I been doing it the last two and a half years only, I'd have a huge new body of work. Time to breakthrough and do it. Bright blessings.
