@@JAlexanderG yeah, that seems to be the most efficient at mice, rats however.....they seem to shy away from the bucket traps. The best rat trap so far he's tested is that spring loaded pneumatic reset one that screws to the wall..... I think since the bucket traps, the rest are just for fun and profit. I wish YT wasn't so mamby pamby about video showing kill shots on rodents. I like to see the whole thing! Your rodent with the bot fly concerned me. Since we both live in Oregon perhaps you could let me know what geographical area you live in? I live just east of Gresham in the predominately NW corner of Oregon. I am a Oregon native but never knew that bot flys were a thing here! Keep up the excellent vids. You got a new sub and bell from me!

I wonder if you could build this without the actual trap. Make a it smaller and have pressure/motion sensors or something like that so as soon as they enter you trap them and can do what you need with them. Put a bunch of them around the barn and (theoretically) catch a bunch in one night.

Nice, you were able to get away to Hawaii. You need several trail cameras. One to record what you want and one that uses the cellular network to send you real time pictures to your phone or computer. That way you can capture the action and the culprit. Hog trappers use them all the time to trigger the drop gate on their traps.

My brother keeps insisting that rats are more easily attracted to salami than peanutbutter. I have only caught mouses with peanutbutter around my house but i havent seen any signs of rats either so i havent felt tempted to try his theory. He has a big live catch trap that he brought to his worksite since they did see traces of rats. They baited the trap with salami in a storage room and left it with the door closed thinking the rat was hiding in there. The next day they had a big rat in the trap but they also found a chewed hole in the door since the rat wasnt in there to start with. Would be fun to see a comparison with same traps in same location at the same time with different bait to see what attracts them most. Thank you for your epic videos! Best regards from Sweden

I picked up a homemade live catch trap from a thrift store and used that Idea to make my own but its to catch a cat or a coon. The basic design is heavy screen and a gravity drop door. Use a snap trap on the outside top of the screen box run a string off the trigger with bait on the end of string when the trap snaps it yanks a Dowell pin and tje door falls. Simple effective.

Nutella works even better if you put it in between the bait tray and base plate. It forces the bait tray to be lifted to spring the traps vs their small weight pressing down on it.

1. I guess we need a test to see if the box is necessary; the snap trap worked both times. 2. The box does at least make it easier to censor your videos for KZbin. 3. Is your son not allergic to Nutella? I hope it works well as bait, in that case.

Shawn, don't know if anyone else mentioned this already, but that drill hole you made, can be done a WHOLE lot easier if you purchase a Forstner bit. Also, you mentioned the "lid cage" might make the rats more likely to go in because they might feel more safe... but have the clear plexi-glass, do you think that affected its effectiveness? I don't know how well rats see so maybe it made no difference, just curious what you thought. Finally, what tipped you off to that mouse having a parasite? The dark patches? Or its girth? Something else?

Hi Shawn great videos showing the mechanics of the traps. With this trap, would a rat if he tripped the trap without being caught, roaming in the box looking for a way out, be able to get out. I did notice a small gap when the lid shut down, would the rat be able to push his nose to the gap and force his way out, even with the magnets, rats are very strong animals when they have to fight their way out of a situation would the sides be tall enough so he cant use his feet to push his back up to open the box.

I've had pretty bad luck with the traditional spring snap mouse trap like that. 3 of the 4 house mice I have as pets (until Spring anyway. I give them a warm place to stay all winter, then release them out in the wild come spring) were victims of a trap that didn't properly catch and kill them. One lost his front paw, one lost an eye (it hit his head, but didn't kill him. I nursed him back to health with veggie oil and peanut butter for a few days until the swelling went down and he could eat normal food again) and the 3rd got away with just a sore paw as that one got snapped as I was right there, so I got it out of the trap and into the pin quickly. I now just go with a live trap and capture them until spring (as mentioned above) then take them far away from any houses (around 7km out into the woods) and release them. Rocky (the one with the missing eye) will be the exception as he seems to like it in the cage and tries to get back in if I take him out haha. He's the only one not afraid of me as well. I think nursing him back to health may be the reason for that.
