Little Richard wanted to stay mad about Elvis singing his song live. But later he said, once you meet the guy, you can’t be mad at him. Nicest guy in the business.

I was alive during these times...and I NEVER understood it!!! I had many wonderful black friends and they were very true to me!!! My fathers best friend was black, his entire life! I have eaten with them several times! ELVIS got a bad rapp; he was not accepted by his own race and by the black race either for a while...BUT that changed very quickly!!! He was the most talented man that I have EVER seen!!! Thank you for your wonderful reaction! And, YES, he sang all genres and NOW belongs to 5 MUSIC HALL OF FAMES!!! This was well DESERVED!!!

IN THE GHETTO was written by MAC DAVIS. He wanted Elvis to record it, because Elvis grew up in poverty's poverty and could tell the story in a timeless, heartfelt way that could resonate with people.

A couple of years ago I met Estelle Brown ( one of the black lady back up singers in the Sweet Inspirations). I asked if she owns anything Elvis gave her. Without skipping a beat, she reached into her shirt and popped out a large thick gold necklace with the TCB lightning bolt. It was large, thick and very valuable. I asked if I could touch it. She is such a sweet lady!

Elvis' jeweler Lowell Hayes is still alive snd makes the TCB chains from the original mold that he made the first one with. He has a website you csn order from. He makes all the different jewelry Elvis wore and still sells it today!

I've watched a lot of reactions to this, but yours is by far the best I've seen. You're so right that racism is taught. Elvis grew up extremely poor, during a time of segregation, living near and in black neighborhoods. I've heard him say in interviews "I was taught to be considerate of other people's feelings and to treat other people as I would like to be treated". He never forgot that lesson. You might want to follow this up by reading the article "Elvis Presley and The Black Community: Dispelling the Myths". There are also video clips along with the article. It will give you a sense of Elvis's true character.

I love this reaction. Wr are all human..I agree 100% hate is taught. Elvis was a great man who broke the barriers not only in music but in reminding us that we are all equal. When you u derstand him as a man and the person that he truly was you can u.derstand and appreciate his music that much more. I loom forward to watching your journey discovering one of the greats.

He took the advice from Reverend Brewster. Brewster was a very Active Activist. Sir Elvis delivered his message by Singing it. He sang in the Ghetto and If I can dream. Chech out Las Vegas, he was singing to those rich people that came from all over the world to see him. The best platform to deliver that message to open people eyes and ears.

Elvis was born in a 1 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. Elvis wanted to be more open about it, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Your elders lived in a very different America than you grew up, not that all of these prejudices don't still exist, they do, but your parents and grandparents had to live through this time period in America, as horrific as it was. They were/ or still are, very strong individuals to come through it. They did a lot of fighting to make this country a bit better than they had experienced, and the fight continues with the new rise of white supremacists trying desperately to make this country return to this period shown in the video. Elvis was one of very few white folks at that time, that stood up for what he believed.

I apologize for the length of this, but hopefully it will be helpful to you. These are performances of Tutti Frutti: Elvis Presley and The Blue Moon Boys Performing "TUTTI FRUTTI" on Stage Show - February 4, 1956 (1:55) and Little Richard - Tutti Frutti (1956) (2:07). Side note: you might want to check out some other performances by Little Richard as this one was unusually calm for him. As for "In the Ghetto" it was written by Mac Davis. He was white but, as a small child, had a little black friend who lived in the ghetto and he couldn't understand why he had to live in such bad conditions. That's what inspired him to write the song. As soon as Elvis heard it he said "that's my song". His recording studio advised him not to record it, and his manager told him it would ruin his career. But Elvis, even though he had single-handedly lifted his family out of poverty, was willing to put his career on the line to get this message out to the world. To see him sing it: Elvis Presley - In The Ghetto (Live) (2:36). Another great one that was written for him as a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. is: Elvis Presley - If I Can Dream - Show Closer ('68 Comeback Special) (3:12). If you react to these, I would highly suggest you first read the article I mentioned in my other comment. It will help you understand why these two songs meant so much to Elvis. He didn't speak out on social issues because he said he was just an entertainer, but the way he lived his life spoke volumes.
