Hi Lois, My suburban friends where horrified that I wanted to raise a family here. My babies (now 29 & 22) slept through the night. You adapt to the sirens from all emergency vehicles. Hospitals, doctors, schools,not too mention shopping, all are within walking distance. The best part is living in a mostly residential area. On the big holidays, everyone leaves my area. It is like a ghost town. I love it! Closely resembles country life. Lol Have a great day!

I am a descendent of those who probably didn't want to join the church. I have ancestors who were Amish and Mennonites. I am taking a trip one day to look up there records in Pennsylvania and see if I have any Amish family there. I definitely dress modestly like they do. I just don't wear dresses anymore like I used to. I always wondered why I am the way I am and it is probably because of my ancestors. I am German, Swiss, and Scandinavian among others like Irish and British. Where is this store located? Some of the Amish descendants in my hometown in Tennessee are descendants of one of the families that came over with my ancestors on the same boat. They came over together. I have been to the store before in my hometown and never knowing until recently how connected we really are and also they have family in Pennsylvania that I believe they never met because they have the same last name and they both own stores by the same name. I am looking forward to visiting Lancaster, PA where my ancestors landed and to hopefully find some family and lots of info. I have my ancestors first and last names so it should be easy.

If anyone is interested, the Oklahoma Amish are not all that Amish compared to the East Coast Amish. These Amish use machinery like tractors, lawn mowers etc. They're probably closer to Menninite than the original Amish you'll find in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio.

christschool, Yes in Ohio the Amish do not use anything with motors at their homes. However, in Ohio if they come work on my house and I supply the tools like drills they will use them. One of my greatest fears while driving is coming upon a buggy in the evening or night. No distracted driving for me.

Why is it situational like that, do you know? I wish we had the Amish here in NC. I would love to hire them for work around my house and hope some of their values would be shared with me. From what I know, I really admire them.

He didn't show any Amish, which is respectful since they dont have their pics taken. The two ladies he showed from the back were mennonite. They use electricity and drive, ect. Trust me Amish arent there buying bread and pies, they are making their own. But they can be savvy business people selling stuff to the English, as they call us. I love spending the day in Amish country.
@MsRedsphere
@MsRedsphere 6 жыл бұрын
christschool Many in my area need outside jobs. They will ride in their buggies or they use hired drivers to pick up crews for big jobs like building houses, etc. The wives, elders, and children make things to sell to us english. Also the men make furniture and wood items. The farms are inherited by the children. But, when you have many children and after many generations they need to find additional income besides farming. So, there is a lack of farmland available for each generation. Some have moved away to other parts of the country where land is available. They have spread out through the midwest because of needing farmland.

I live in “Amish Country” in Ohio. I can tell you from experience many of the items, especially the baked goods, are bought from vendors. All they do is bake it in their ovens. They re-package and re-label many goods then sell them at a higher price. For example, candles. They buy yankee candles, remove the labels, add their own and then mark up the price. Same goes for soaps and lotions. So called Amish made toys, are made in China. Is this true in every Amish store, perhaps not. However I have never been in any Amish store that only sold goods they made. In fact most people that shop in the Amish stores in our community are visitors passing through or on vacation. Buyer beware.
@steveniemyer9288
@steveniemyer9288 6 жыл бұрын
Oscar Mannhein as I stated it may not be true in every Amish store, and as you stated you can tell they are Yankee candles but the distinctive glass. It should be further noted the sell other relabeled Yankee candles that are not in glass containers. They also buy frozen baked goods from Walmart, (breads, pastries, pies) bake and sell them as “Amish Made”. Again Amish stores near you maybe different.

Because the amish grow a lot of their own fruit/vegetables. I live near an Amish grocery store. They'll have limited fruits/vegetables, but it will depend on what the farmers have to spare. When they do have things that are not grown locally (avocados, grapes, etc), it's ridiculously expensive, and not very much of it. The English certainly aren't going to buy it, and the Amish are probably getting theirs from a larger grocery store.
