Personally, the way I understood this episode is that it didn't even matter. This whole episode was all about being a hero because of your actions and who you are and not just because ''you were chosen''. His brother may be worthy of it or not but who cares, the only thing I see here is a rusty sword that's dangerous for its people because it attracts monsters. Himmel didn't need the sword, and Stark and his brother don't need it either. That's why I think the show doesn't make anyone try to pull it, because fuck the 'Hero sword''

He didn't care about what his pristine cloak meant to the village or about being the strongest, he cared about his brother, and that's exactly what led him to be stronger than the rest.

The flashback where they said the king gave them 10 copper coins and Himmel had a replica sword was at the very start of their journey. They mentioned the king only gave them 10 copper because so many other heroes had tried before and died, so it was money they saw as wasted, that is to say, it was spending money for their journey and not reward money for killing the Demon King. At that time Himmel still thought he'd be able to get the real sword.

Funny thing is that Stolz is I think the first character where his name's meaning (in German) is not a good fit for his character. Stolz means proud, and when he is initially introduced it is hinted that he is a proud man, but then when we see him with his brother we can see that his caring side is way stronger than his pride.

I think the show is trying to send us a message: Fuck the Hero Sword. Himmel was able to help people, defeat the Demon King and become a hero without it. On the other hand, the ''Hero Sword'' that's supposed to give hope to the people was just a rusty sword that was problem because it attracted monsters. Compare it to the fake sword that still looked ''new'' on Himmel's funeral. That's why no one tries to pull it this episode because it doesn't matter. The brother and Eisen preparing a huge hamburger steak for Stark because they thought he was a worthy warrior means a lot more than being able to pull some sword.

My interpretation of Stark and the sword. First time he sees the sword the flash back is immediately of his brother's face. I believe he wondered at that moment if his brother would've been able to pull it since he was his hero. I think the meaning of the sword is hard work. Himmel defeated the demon lord through hard work. Stark was given hamburger steak for his birthdays by his brother and then his master for his hard work being a warrior. When Fren went looking for him Stark was putting in work around the village

I'm an anime only here's my stupid theory. The sword was a test, placed there by Flamme . The sword was never meant to be pulled out, there was no prophecy. Because a true hero doesn't need a special sword, a true hero doesn't let not being "the one" stop themselves. A true hero continues on anyway

I like to think that it goes like this: The heroes who give up after failing to pull the sword out are simply unworthy of defeating the Demon King, as they're only in it for the glory but Himmel was willing to continue despite being a "fake" because it never mattered to him whether or not his sword was the real thing, it's those who continue on even after such a failure that are worthy of true victory!

i didn't read this story but the names in this show are interesting. they're all german and most of them basically describe the characters or a major characteristic of them. frieren: freeze (just so you get the idea: emotionally cold) fern: distant stark: strong stolz: pride himmel: heaven eisen: iron kraft: strength lügner: liar heiter: cheerful draht: wire linie: line (only one i'm not sure what the connection is) aura: aura (obviously but in german the projection of mana that's shown in the episodes with her would be be described as an aura) flamme: flame i realized this a while ago but it didn't really sink in until this episode when the dad was talking about stark and stolz, where one is the pride but without him realizing it, stark is also incredibly strong once he can overcome his anxiety

I think a lot of reactors missed this, but the parallel between himmel and stark was nicely executed. I may be wrong but I dont think the point on why it keeps flashing back to the sword is because stark would be the one to pull it. I think that would undermine what Himmel has done. The sword was there to remind stark that even when himmel didnt manage to pull out the sword, he still became a hero. Unlike him who ran away. With the lesson being that it doesn't matter if you pull out the sword or not, you dont have to be destined to become a real hero. Much like Eisen stating that he considers anyone who works hard a warrior. It's a nice subversion of the trope, that a man who sets out to do something does it because he's righteous and determined enough. Or maybe I'm completely wrong based on the current revelations in the recent chapter of Frieren.

You missed what time the flashback is. It was before they slayed the demon king. That's why the king only gave them so little money for their adventure

I think the real "Hero's sword" is just a powerful magic sword that deadass got stuck in a rock and cant be pulled out period, monsters are still trying to destroy it because its still powerful but cant be used (though you can go the jack horner rout and use the rock its stuck to too), since the sword has been stuck there for so long, people have forgotten that its just a stuck magic sword, so in time a myth was made that claimed only a chosen hero would be able to pull the word out. Even in a magical world, sometimes "destiny" and chosen hero stuff, is still more improbable than just trying to find out a meaning for yourself, you don't have to wait for the universe to choose you cause it wont.

This has been my crackpot theory ever since I've read the chapter. No one being able to pull the sword feels like it means that the current Demon King isn't the "final" final demon king, because in the lore revealed by Flamme, Demon king basically mean being the strongest demon, with the demons still existing, a demon king could still rise again, which means that the sword will be pulled at the time that it will be the final battle where demons would be wiped out completely.

Personally, I think the show was trying to tell us that the sword didn't matter. Himmel was able to defeat the demon king without it, he helped people and became a hero with a ''fake sword''. The ''Hero Sword'' on the other hand? It was just a rusty sword that was attracting monsters and basically being a problem for its people. So fuck the sword, who needs it? Not Himmel, nor Stark or his brother. They're worthy heroes without it.

Well the demon king was hell strong, he was the first to make an entire race of sociopaths unite and he reined over a thousand years, but spoilers... there is a hint that in 900 years a great menace will appear and the age of demons will come.

I understood that the episode is themed around about people who stand up and do the work. Eisen literally said the people who works hard are warriors and that easily applies to heroes as well. I just didn't want to get into spoilers but the author really "rewards" the reader for noticing the small little details
