A simple way to help explain Hijab to people is to point out, as Aghah so eloquently said, that Hijab is purely rational. Someone may ask, "How?". Ask them, "Would you be okay with scantily clad or nude men to be present in front of young children?" They will of say, "Of course not!" Then ask, "Are there not laws that impose fines or imprisonment for people who appear nude in public or who do not properly cover their private parts?" They will say "Yes". These are the first steps towards acknowledging how Hijab is rational and necessary. As soon as someone admits that people can not walk around nude in public, they have themselves admitted that Hijab is a necessity. The degree of coverage is another topic which if approached rationally will show that Islamic Hijab that has been practiced for thousands of years by people of all Religions is the most logical form of dress.
