Every book needs and deserves a different annotating system! So far I'm loving your channel and I would love it if you make a video on expanding your vocabulary through reading, that's actually why I started reading about two years ago. English is not my first language so I wanted to get better at it, I think I've improved but still I would love to hear your way of doing it. ♥️

Any books (for me personally) that I feel the need to annotate, are books that I feel the *need* to read more than once. Thats the difference for me between reading to entertain and reading for expansion/knowledge/analysis etc. If I don’t feel the need to read it a second time, then I usually don’t feel nor see the need to annotate. Love this video and glad I found your channel!

I've watched tons of annotations video but I'm not kidding when I say this is the *bestest* one!! you go into so many variations and ways to annotate because like you pointed out, each book is annotated differently or is not at all. This is the best annotating video I’ve seen here! I love how you admit that annotating is often messy and doesn’t have to be Instagram-perfect. I think many of us need to focus on why we love to read rather on what they’re going to look like in pictures. Everything you say is also very precise and your voice is very soothing haha. I watched this to revisit annotating as I'm preparing for this huge book report, and I LOVE that you loved One Hundred Years of Solitude!! It's genre doesn't get nearly as much recognition as it should. Magical Realism is such a fulfilling genre. I have a couple awesome recommendations in that same genre if anyone would like to know them!! One Hundred Years of Solitude was such a mind boggling read for me I redid the full family tree highlighting family lines and everything becuase there's just SO MUCH, but it's sooooo good

I personally just use tabs and highlight/underline and sometimes write my thoughts . I’m not a big fan of writing on my books but I love underlining and highlighting:). I also usually read romance / ya / fantasy so like I have no reason to go into deep analysation and underlining my fav scenes and quotes and tabbing them is more than enough.

I am a big fan of sticky notes/book tags + a notebook method. I used to be a big “write all over my books, create dog ears etc” type of person but I realised that once I’m ready to: I like to pass my books on to the next person. It will often be strangers from fb groups for giving away books and I’d like that person who will get my preloved book to get a clean copy both because it extends the life of it (more people like clean books = less wastage) but also… sometimes annotations etc. are very personal and I’d rather not have people look at mine 😂.
@lislibrary

you make a good point! some of my books i could never loan out or give away because the annotations are so personal! i try to guess whether i'm reading a book i want to keep in my collection before i annotate it. so that romance novel might get donated at some point and it still looks new :) thanks for watching!!

this video is great! it has so many useful tips for annotating and i definitely will use some in the future! i only started annotating like a month ago because earlier i thought it would ruin my books… for me personally putting in tabs is not a way to go, i just don’t like it how it looks - but obviously it is very valid too - i just underline my fav quotes, expressions and thoughts in the book and write my thoughts on the pages 😊

Great video! Very informative. I also agree that instagram does make annotating daunting for some, but I liked how you explained all your ways with examples. I also like how you put in that one way to annotate is to give up annotating mid way through. If it’s not fun or interesting to do then why do it? One can lose the love for reading because you “have to do it”. “ have to finish it” or have to make it pretty”. Thank you for the recap of the ways at the end too. Keep up the good work with the videos 🙌🏼

The Readwise app for the phone allows you to take a picture of the page, then highlight the parts of the page you want, and then it just stores the text in your Readwise database. I thought that this might be good for your flow of photographing pages - and with the Readwise app, you even can assign it to the book and have it all in one collection. I really like that.

This was such a detailed and informative video! I used to underline/highlight and all of that in years past. I'm not sure why I got away from it. I think maybe because I used to do most of my reading on the train to/from work. Some people can highlight/underline on a moving train but I never could do it without everything going all crooked and looking awful. That's no excuse now, since I've been working from home for years, long pre-Covid. I guess not doing it became a habit. Anyway, this was great. It makes me happy to see people who are even more serious about their reading than I am! I feel like such a weirdo in real life because very few people I know in my real life seem to read much at all. Somehow... they all live in Booktube!

All the videos Ive seen people have beautifully annotated book that are artsy. I dont annotate like rhat at all. I use 1 highlighter (whatevere coloe I choose which has nothing to do with anything, just whatever I feel at the time), and a pen. I highlight anything that resonatesnwith me or I fight interesting. I underline words I do not know and write the definition in the margin around the area the word is in. I then reread the that part to understand the word and context. That's it. Simple, effective.

this is interesting:] i'm still starting out on annotating and i'm trying to see what works for me so the different variations really help. i'm also a perfectionist so i somehow instilled in my mind that i wanted to use the same style for all the books i read but i really like that you didn't have a 'fixed' annotating style, you just do whatever feels right for the book and i like that! i think i'd consider doing that as well. i also do think about how time-consuming it'd be to do the aesthetic annotating styles others are doing so the simpler annotating styles feels more appealing to me. i just need to get over my fear of actually writing on the book. overall, this is really helpful! also keeping track of words you aren't familiar with and adding them to quizlet? to expand your vocabulary is very smart, i'll start doing that too>

Thank you for all the methods! I have three different books I have to read for my ethics class for my upcoming summer semester (Monday). I know I need some way to keep things down. I'll likely combine methods. Thank you so much!

I think for the second type of annotation, something to make the annpotation on a notebook easier is just getting a small like A5 or A6 notebook- one with no lines or dots or anything is really nice because it doesn't look like an old, school notebook, (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's not just not really my style) and you can create patterns if you're linking things plotwise and such

this is such an amazing video!!!! i can't believe it's your first, I just finished annotating a book for the first time (only using single coloured tabs for quotes/parts that I liked) and this was so helpful for how I can take it further, think I'm going to stick (no pun intended) to only using single coloured tabs and then work my way up as I see fit lol, saving this video for later!!!!!

This was a very good video on annotating. My question is. On the Wuthering Heights book, did you read the chapter to just enjoy it first then go back and do all the things? I’m in the middle of my first Classic, and that’s what I’m finding that I do. Read for the feels with minimal interaction then return to mark it up for further information, ideas, quotes and names Etc.

For the most part, I think I’ll only annotate a book for fun if it’s a re-read or if I’m in love with the book from the very start

Hi, this is John. I appreciate that there are other ways to mark parts of the book to remember passages, chapters, and events in the book. This year, I want to go back to my avocation of reading books. May I ask if you are a writer or plan to be? I think you would be a good writer. Thank you. Have a blessed year ahead.

Can you make a video about how you expand your vocabulary by reading, because I do the same thing too. Whenever I see a word I don't know I just write the word and it's meaning on a small sticky note. I've also been trying to find a great way to use Quizlet, and using it to study new vocabulary sounds amazing

yes i'd love to! i tend to need to do more than just write down new words so Quizlet has been great! a video about it is coming soon :)
