On the anniversary of Murray Balls tragic death, long ago I made a tribute to him in the form of a music video. Today, on the sixth anniversary, I'm back to review arguably my favourite work of his, Footrot Flats: The Dogs Tale. I hope you all enjoy, and that we can all appreciate Murray's masterpiece just a little bit more.

I loved Footrot flats I would read it in the newspaper as a child. I have several of the books bought and gifted. Horse was one of my favourites but I loved them all. I was so sad when I heard Murray Ball passed away I also still have the DVD which I loved and Slice of heaven still brings a smile. Thank you for your tribute to Murray Ball and I didn't expect to see Footrot Flats on You tube so glad it's being kept alive

Just watched it. Never heard of it before. Loved it. It's like watching a version of my childhood where everybody has NZ accents. Here in Texas we were deprived of Murray's work, and now it's time to catch up. As an aside, The Dog even looks like my current dog, Tucker.

When I look at the story of this film I see it as several short stories strung together to make a larger one. The choppy nature of this film actually works due to the nature of what it’s an adaptation of… Typical newspaper comic strips are meant to be pretty much boom, boom, boom and your story is told, and unless it’s an established trope, previous events are very rarely mentioned. And it’s also part of the reason why franchises like this have a hard time telling a story that goes for more than 10 minutes, because the structure of the strips only allows for a short story to be told. A lot of the film media around Garfield comic strip plays as a great example of this, the comic is great, and the old show Garfield and Friends is not to bad either, but I can barely stand some of longer movies and shows (I haven’t really seen any of the NICK stuff not sure on the quality of those…), and part of the reason for this is they get bogged in plot, which is an issue the comic strips don’t have…

Growing up in the country, this comic appealed to me more than any superhero.

Giving away my age, whenever we went into town, I would beg my mother to buy me the latest edition at the local news agency. When the movie came out, we took a family trip into the Big City to see it in the cinema. Good times.

I was a kid when I watched this cartoon movie with Hungarian dub on a CRT TV connected via a VHS recorder. I didn't know about the origin of the movie, but back in the 90's I enjoyed the scenes of the movie. 🙂 I wanted to watch this cartoon movie again on the Internet, but I forgot its title until a few years ago. I found its original English title and the cover art on Google search engine. Last year I watched this with original English dub and I enjoyed to watch in my adulthood. I consider this as "hidden gem" among animated movies. 😀

I always thought this was am Australian film when i was a kid (im aussie). I agree its a fantastic film. Re-watched it about a week ago here on youtube. How good is Horse though? Clearly a gamer with some of those backing tracks and doom references too lad.

@@MattTGM welcome and where does the iconic song come in I thought I remembered it as a kid at the beginning of the movie but last time I watched it it wasn’t there? But I didn’t watch the whole movie either. I absolutely love that song I want it at my wedding!
