I am a big supporter of having something like that. I use a collapsible bag from t3 gear. I also put surplus eagle dump pouches on my waist belt or on the bottom of my ruck to just load up with something. This is truly such an under valued thought and I’m glad you’re sharing it.

Great tip. One option is what I call promo beach bags, those flat "packs" about the size of a binder that has two eyelets on top and two on bottom and cord is used as both the closure method and the backpack "straps". Promo because they are often given out at events; I save a sex dark green one with the JEEP logo on it. Ribz Front Pack is worn on the front and has a large pocket on each side; they are lightweight and spreads gear to the front (for hikers, not those who carry chest rigs ready). Hiking stores also often carry thin backpacks that fld into it's own pocket which would also fit into a cargo pocket. If bushcrafting it will mostlikely be a fire mterial bag, during SHTF it may end up being used for whatever food you find as you may scavenge in your Selco like wasteland.

Yes. Any seasoned packer carries additional bags or sacks for various purposes, whether to scoop up water or a place to stuff used garbage or soiled clothing. Some references are called stuff sacks or compression sacks, mini packs, accessory packs and so forth. Many modern packs come with shock cord or open panels for stuffing exterior items. These are mostly hiking packs, but it's spilling into the pop market as well. You are not alone. Godspeed!

I had this same idea many years ago (I'm old now) when my family and I were going to walk around Angel Island. I just needed to bring a jacket and water bottle. I looked at my 15 pound Get Home Bag and realized it's too heavy to walk around with all day so I just left it in the car. I had to carry the water and jacket in my hands. I immediately purchased an Osprey Ultralight pack when I got home. I have used it many times since then to carry small items when I don't want to carry them by hand. Thanks for sharing your idea.

I have 3. An osprey version that has ok straps and a water bottle sleeve used for travel. I wish it wasn't in a bright color because it is excellent. A mountain hardware version that is a dry bag with straps and has actually been useful a couple of times when wet weather happened unexpectedly and impromptu beach trip to isolate wet sandy clothes. The third is a maxpedition rollup bag that was an impulse buy at a g-show and has never been used because it rolls out small, doesnt synch up and is super heavy and bulky for what it is.

I actually do and have always carried an SSE bag. Generally in my EDC more so than my bag. Fits well in a cargo pocket of your pants. Great addition to anyone's kit/edc. Used it from anything to a pillow with brush in it... to carrying tinder. Gathering material from a random cache found along a waterway. And once even as an improvised for warmer in a colder climate.

Carrying a recon pack. Been doing it since 2009. Took a trip to summit San Gergonio (11,499). Once base was established at 8700, we didn’t want to lug our packs up to the summit. I didn’t have a proper lightweight Sea to Summit or one like yours so I rolled up my EDC ruck, trussed it up like a rolled roast beef with around 500 feet of cordage and carried it like a third component of my sleep system: pad, bag and daypack.😂😂

Many years back I purchased the SO Tech Expanding SERE pack. This pack covers exactly what you are talking about in this video. This is a great pack. I’m not even sure they are making them anymore or if they are special order. Great pack, but spendy. They carry some nice features that other expandable packs don’t seem to have like PALS webbing, MOLLE attachment straps and a small zippered pocket up front. I’ve added a small admin pouch to the front and it adds to the packs performance for my needs.
