I’m a first-level exec for a Fortune 100, and I can confirm that the imposters never have imposter syndrome. No one ever second-guesses dudes who speak in an authoritative tone of voice even when they’re simply repeating someone else’s ideas - or are spouting absolute nonsense during ludicrous time-wasting “brainstorming’ sessions. Everyone expects women to prove over and over and over again that they’re ready for promotion, while men - ALL men - get credit for swagger because it looks like confidence to the people making these decisions (even the women). We, as women, need to get comfortable with describing our successes, so we can identify the skills that are really necessary for success.

As a childfree woman myself, I love how candidly and frequently being childfree is discussed on this podcast. It is so validating! I would also love to see Chelsea interview a older childfree woman so we could hear what it was like to be childfree pre-2000s.

I was divorced at 30 with three kids under age 10. My ex lost all custody, so it was all on me. I managed to get my bachelors degree in nursing by age 35, but there was no way I could continue any further with three kids. My youngest graduated high school in May of 2019. I began law school at 45 years old in August 2019. I’ll be done next May. I believe I can have it all, but not all at once. There’s no way I could’ve done law school earlier. I still work full time, too, but at least my kids are self-sufficient now. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I’ve never felt more competent or confident.

Digital currencies continues to reshape the world globally, its hard for anyone going against them these days, though from a trader's perspective. I feel we really need more experts in the field updating newbies on how the the community works. crypto currencies are gradually moving towards something big and the price surge over the past few months is just the beginning of greater things to come. lots of persons are skeptical on when to buy-in the market and whether it isn't too late to buy an asset, when you're hodling it could be but when trading its never too late to buy. I find the need to bring women back to the reality that they cannot have everything problematic, without asking why these distinctions do not also apply to men. In this way, I believe, the role of women as the only caregiver is perpetuated and possible government interventions to facilitate families as a whole are left aside.

Men and women are not the same and will never be. So I (personally) think they shouldn't be compared 🤷🏽‍♀🤔 men tend to provide for their family (stay at home wives), women deal with more neuroses (on and off their periods), it's a sad reality that we tend to ignore...

OMFG. I had a male client that would constantly argue about my rates. He'd come back with like half of what I quoted. I got so fed up with it that I called him out. He told me that's "just how business is done," and I must not understand how negotiating works. Hell to the no. Needless to say, he's a former client and I don't feel remotely guilty about walking away. It's so freaking exhausting second-guessing myself all the time, and then to have a client come at me and tell me I don't know what I'm doing... No woman needs to justify why they don’t have children. I would also be interested in hearing a discussion about the effects on colleagues when women go on extended maternity leave. I live in Germany where women have perhaps more choice and support and that topic is never discussed! Why is it taboo?
@sagapoetic8990
@sagapoetic8990 3 жыл бұрын
Our labour laws are weaker in the US and while there are 'anti-discrimination' laws, these are weakly implemented and also -- extremely limited in focus. Regarding maternity issues per se, many companies only allow for very short maternity leaves for new moms. Probably most companies, especially in blue collar sectors, have no leave for maternity -- you have to use time off without pay and hope you have a job to return to. There is a federal rule but these days, most federal rules are ignored or not enforced. Complicating things, sometimes the biggest discriminators are: other women. Not necessarily men surprisingly enough. You can have single female boss who opposes maternity leave and conversely a female boss with children -- who does not want to hire single females or gives special treatment to other women with children. As a childless woman, I've experienced two situations in white collar jobs: a female colleague constantly calling out because she had to care for her children and another situation where a female colleague with a child who was a supervisor, came to work almost two hours late and left the office at 2 or 3 pm and claimed she would work from home. Note -- this person's mother lived with her, so there was no reason for the excessive absences and not getting work done. But good luck getting her to respond or reply to emails. She always claimed care for her child who had no development disabilities as the reason and retaliated when myself and another colleague complained after too many cases of this. We need rules that are enforced and fair or you get one extreme or the other kind of situation. Many bosses are female and ironically, problems persist although they differ nowadays
@maryssa8593
@maryssa8593 3 жыл бұрын
@@sagapoetic8990 I agree wholeheartedly with this as someone with children. We’re expected to put those issues at the door and be available mentally for 8 hours a day but realistically that’s not the case. We worry about our family, home life and stress about not being able to focus most days solely on work and this is coming from a mom of three who have two older children not biologically related to my husband. I really hope the pandemic sheds more light and we are more sympathetic toward moms who are in the workforce.

Can you ask feedback from someone you trust to tell you the truth? In my first job I struggled with something similar, but I sat down with my boss a few times, explained why I was unhappy with my own work and asked her to help me learn from it. That helped me, both in terms of some feedback related to the work, but also in trusting that she meant it when she said she was happy with the work. My partner, when he coached young perfectionist employees, used to ask them to hand over a piece of work that they thought was a 6/10 to someone without comment and usually they would discover it was an 8/10 for the other person. Then he would discuss with them what makes something sufficient versus good in their view and in other people's view and instructed them to find the other person's 6/10 in some piece of work. Not because they had to hand in that level every time after, but so they would be tuned in to other people's expectations and could make a choice on what level to go for in that circumstance. I hope any of this is helpful.

I can't imagine how I could possibly accomplish any of the things I want to in life if I came home every night and had to change diapers and help with elementary school homework. Hard pass. I would have also loved to hear Jazmine talk about the morality of ghostwriting for these losers. I suppose a paycheck is a paycheck and if you can manipulate the world of men to make ends meet that's fine, but I'm not sure if I would feel right putting that content out there if I didn't believe in it. Now some post with a bunch of nonsense about finding your inner child through a psychedelic retreat is taking up space on the internet.

I think a lot of women have lied to a lot of [on average younger] other women about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting for various bad reasons. I've been aware that childbirth is more painful than what you can imagine since I was 4 and I keep seeing influencers surprised that natural birth isn't a walk in the park. So somebody must have lied to them by omission, I swear...

And you preferably wouldn't make a kid with someone you don't have good reason to expect to continue being with throughout the childhood of that kid, getting married because of pregnancy is the dumbest shit, it's the irresponsible option, the worse (not worst but a less than 59%) bet. If your situation turns out fine: congratulations, because that makes you the less common outcome, you literat bear the odds, by definition, and I'm glad for you, but you've bet against the odds and it just worked out. Please try to not take that particular route. Shit happens, but just don't be flippant about this route and go into it lightly, you may not be doing that kid the favour you think you might be doing it - and I'm saying this as someone who came around after her parents got married but who understands just how doomed their marriage really was 🤷‍♀️ They divorced after two frickin' years. Try to prevent that if reasonably possible in your situation, learn from my parents' mistake in some way. I'm not against divorce, it's necessary, it's great even. Just please don't do it dumb and blind "because romance" without it having any true viability, there's so much more to life than biochemical processes getting to run.

Any advice for someone who went to college for something but no longer interest in it? Should you go to college again or make connections?
@theannareich
@theannareich 3 жыл бұрын
Since starting my career, I realized how many people successfully work outside of the profession they studied for, sometimes even very far from that. I would say, think about how you can leverage the skills that you learned in college in different ways and in which fields your unusual education (for that field) could even give you a cutting edge. Despite working very close to the profession I studied for, the most valuable skills I learned in college that benefit my work are time management skills and the ability to teach myself anything, not necessarily the material I learned itself. And I work as a mechanical engineer which has the reputation of requiring mostly technical skills when in actuality common sense and soft skills get you much further. I don’t know what you went to college for but I’m sure there are plenty of other fields that could benefit from your unique perspective. And if you don’t dare to go for a radically different field right away, think about fields that have some overlap with your current profession but include other subjects or responsibilities that interest you more. And then step by step move your career sideways from there. I’m not saying don’t consider going back to college. But do explore other options and think about whether going back to college would actually give you the benefits you’re looking for - or if you could just be using it to procrastinate because you’re worried to take the leap into professional life. Be honest with yourself & you’ll figure it out :-)

Thank you for discussing the working mom/have it all taboos. Let me preface by saying this is how I’ve navigated our sexist work culture. I’m an elder millennial for reference married to a tail end gen Xer. I make 3 times what he makes but I’ve decided to work part time until my youngest is 3 for their developmental benefit, for my sanity, and because we have no quality childcare in the area for babies and toddlers. We tried me working full time and spouse staying home but neither he nor I were satisfied with the results of that after a couple years. Perhaps you can’t have it all at once. And I know I’ve seriously curtailed my career having to quit and decline excellent positions to maintain the part time status. But I believe I’m maintaining my skills and will grow them more as my children age. I can’t have it all at once but in the end I will “have it all.” Also I’m not a perfect parent and don’t think anyone should feel the need to be. I’m good, and better than my parents (sorry Mom and Dad it’s true). So I figure that’s good enough. I work to promote women in my industry and vote for those who push family friendly work policies. Thanks for advocating for working women no matter how they navigate our society.

@@kannot1 I have a hand dyed yarn company for the past 5 years. I made 40 000$ CAD after expenses in 2021 which perfectly decent for me. However, we have universal public daycare here in Quebec and we have always taken advantage of it. I wouldn’t have bein able to do this while caring for kids, cooking, cleaning. Housework is work and wanting to do too many things at the same time leads to burnout.

This is especially true for the hesitations and worries as I am currently going through interview process at the moment so the fears and doubts are true. I especially love your advice of embodying self love and negotiate for what I am worth and how small things to myself may look like big things to someone else💗💗

As someone who is married to a software engineer: totally co-sign to what Jazmine was saying about the tech executives. It’s amazing how many of them can’t string together a decent sentence, but what’s even more disheartening is how many of them lack basic decency.
