Angela at the end talking about the word ''Precious'' is truly wonderful. If you don't remember, here is this Xiao quote talking to Angela: ''Precious'' is not a word you should utter as lighty as you just did... Dreams, hopes, ideals; all the words that describe what motivate humans to get up and live... Those words encompass meaning too grand for description... But it's simple at the same time.'' End quote.

What I like about his characterization in Ruina the most is that he's pretty realistic. He doesn't immediately forgive angela or empathize with her, being sometimes overly resentful due to his bias towards Ayin, which is shown by the way he treats her at the beginning. But slowly, he sees the good in her and reaches out to it, until finally it culminates in helping her make the decision that will define her as her own person, the one true choice made out of her own will, by accepting the past and embracing the future. Wonderful essay, and I can only hope other PM characters get such treatement from you! And don't self-deprecate by calling this a waste of time cmooon, this is much more fulfilling, productive and creative than 90% of the things someone could do.

Based hokma summary. Honestly a good part of the reason why people flatten characters in general is very few people dissect or care to even think about characters. Part of the reason why LC players tend to be more nuanced in their takes about characters thanks to it kinda being one of the main selling points of the game.

tbh the vast majority of people i find that hate ayin either didnt play LC or finished LoR first. It's a big problem of perspective since most people who did such only saw how his actions effected others rather than the personal reasoning and suffering he went through. Cant blame them but i will always say play LC first.
@narkle9723
@narkle9723 Жыл бұрын
@@bsantini3616 true, and yeah I also say that people need to finish LC first. Without it you really don't get the same view on what Ayin has done, I mean he's arguably probably the most intelligent person in the city and instead of joining a high ranking corp (I mean hell, I wouldn't be surprised if a man with that much passion and dedication got a job in A corp or B corp) he went with carmen and after her death sacrificed everything in order for humanity to break the cycle. Yes he did a lot of messed up things, although as it turns out all of the suffering in L corp was needed to manifest the seed of light, most of his actions were for the long term goal of curing humanity. He's the only person in recorded history to have broken the cycle of the city and even if it doesn't have much of an effect now it'll probably eventually force drastic changes on the city. Sure many people will disagree with the mindset of "the ends justify the means" but I mean... Look at the city, that is not a good way for humanity to exist. In this case I'd say that committing atrocities like that are entirely understandable if it will cure humanity or at the very least break the cycle. In short, Ayin is based.

@@haikyun77the real beauty here is that, no matter what side you choose to be on whether it be Angela, Ayin, Carmen or nobody's side. We can all agree that everyone is a terrible person. Angela? She's a petulant child that wears shoes bigger than what can fit her. Carmen? She's a crafty fox that, if you read between the lines, acts as a cult leader. Ayin? He's a madman that went batshit crazy after Carmen died. It doesn't really matter. No matter how much you defend anyone in this universe, it will ultimately be for naught as everyone has commited a felony at some point.

Love the effort put into the video, and am glad to see some Benjamin appreciation. I do however disagree with a few points on Benjamins motivation and Ayin personality not being "persuasive". The Gebura Cutscenes in LC make it clear that after Carmen's death Ayin took over her role as the optimistic sort, with many like the Chris and his wife referring to him as "venerable lord A". I refer to this as his Adam stage personally, but it does seem he has the capabilities to make charismatic and compelling speech's, but simply chooses not to. I also believe his loss of faith comes not from Ayin becoming more and more desperate, but literally splintering into those personalities we see brought on by cogito in the final days. They were sorta protection methods, but to benjamin Ayin had quite literally transformed into someone new. His restoration in faith only comes when he realizes the will behind the manager was indeed "his" A. Also the benjamin that contacts you is not hokma, but simply a recording as revealed by abel. He has the end of the message on recording, and says he simply lets it play each loop. It was a one time message from the original B. The seed of light script also does not reset time, unlike most assume. you can see it in the loading times, and later evidence in TT2 from LoR, but time cannot be reversed. Time is simply extended, and each loop is just the resetting of the memories of all individuals within the facility. This is also why certain aspects remain the same, why the cryopods are used to "restore" the employees (rather then them just resetting to a natural state from the facility reset) and Why W corp had similar tech. Its also why time passes outside (10 years) despite supposedly resetting. Sorry for the long comment, i really love the video and i love the character

A few corrections "but time cannot be reversed." It can Abel explicitly states this, its exactly what the TT2 does, time is revered in the limited space of the facility. The entire point was that they funded T corp to make it not use W corp's singularity for it. W corp's restoration is an entirely different procedure that removes all memories and experience because it's recreating a body. It relies on biological data as mentioned by the W corp employees but you don't get to have that with abnos so it makes no sense to be used here.

"Therefore I had the bright idea to condense every thought I had floating around in my rotting brain into this amalgamation of a persuasive essay." - that's how you know it's gonna be gud. Commenting less on Hokma himself and more about the meta surrounding him, he functions mainly as an advisor for almost the entirety of his time in the story and - even worse - up until Library of Ruina we only see Hokma when no one listens to him. Advisors lack the lofty pedestals of leadership but are nonetheless separated from their peers. What I'm saying is that Hokma is functionally in a middle-management spot, which is one of the worst type of positions someone can hold in a company. He's crucial to the runnings of LCorp but in a way that's totally unappreciated by his fellow employees and his clients. Notice how little he appears with any of the Sephirot besides Binah, another outcast. Compare to Ayin, who is the PoV character of a game, and Carmen, who is the center by which Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina revolve. Carmen as the Voice is actually a great foil, being a disembodied figure who can only convince people to change themselves to but is totally unable to act independently. And yet, she's still more effective at her little gimmick than Hokma ever was at getting his closest friends to do the right thing. I think you'll see a greater appreciation for good ol' Ben when they release some content on the smoke wars, which I'm guessing will happen in Limbus. Also like 70% of his dialogue mentions Sir Ayin in some way so come on, am I not supposed to make fun of him for that? Great essay can't wait for you to do one for every other character in the Project Moon universe thanks

14:50 I've just realized this but does it mean that both Hokma and Binah have gone through the same near-endless hell of repeats as Angela? Subject to the same script? Yet, they get less empathy in that regard, and they're far less resentful. Perhaps I've underestimated just how hard Angela's programming to love Ayin and never be loved back has influenced her decisions and mindscape. There is also a very ironic, bitter truth, that the only possible 'good end' in Ruina is moving as far away as possible from Ayin & Carmen's intentions. Now, I haven't read Leviathan, or finished Distortion Detective, so I'm not entirely sure how 'right' Carmen was, but it is entirely, overabundantly clear, all the aspects in which she, and subsequently Ayin, were wrong. Also, while all of Ruina's Sephirot dialogues were substantive and relatable, Hokma's touched me deeper than the rest, and I am not yet sure what the consequences of that are. Incredible video by the way, I'm beyond thoroughly impressed. Just coming back to all of the scenes with as much context as we now have, there is simply so much more to appreciate, but your analysis and portrayal is illuminating. Thank you.

It's not only them unlike Angela the employees have died many many many times and they remember it all in LoR as they have default lines implying as such. One core part of Ruina is that Angela doesn't actually care if others have suffered more than her, it makes sense suffering isn't something you can simply compare but Angela wants to have it both ways and say her suffering justified her actions while ignoring what she causes. It's only through the realizations that she comes to realize her mistake. "There is also a very ironic, bitter truth, that the only possible 'good end' in Ruina is moving as far away as possible from Ayin & Carmen's intentions." This actually isn't the case though Angela by the end of LoR does what Ayin would want, she spreads the light just like he was trying to. This is why he thanks her if anything Ruina shows why Ayin's actions were valid by providing Angela as a case where they weren't. A is compared to Angela and Roland our protag group by Binah and Hokma and one very crucial comparison Binah makes in particular is that A wasn't A person focused on the present. Unlike Angela who plans to release the abnormalities into the city out of spite and unlike Roland who went on a rampage, A's actions were motivated from working to a greater good to the point Binah notes that even when she was being lobotomized she didn't see A pouring hate into her despite what she did, she instead saw him workign towards the future and not remaning trapped by the present.

This is a super well made video, and also an amazing watch! Honestly, one interesting thing that I noticed in watching his cutscenses is that Hokma doesn't really get angry. Yes he gets frustrated and you can definitely hear it in his voice at times, but while characters like Angela and Tipheret get angry, Hokma just gets passive aggressive (at least that's how I read some of his dialogue). And I think out of every character, that's meaningful. It's more-or-less implied that Benjamin was pretty expressive, talked about with his outward care for Angela and his pleading with Ayan. Him going from that to so subdued really shows how deeply everything that happened destroyed his spirit. And the one time he does actually show anger is in his meltdown, the point where he's the most emotionally raw.

In the end, both Hokma and Angela were subject to the whims of a man that didn't care for either of them. Media may try to display two characters who suffered similarly and how they may turn out drastically different, yet often fails to do anything more than "this one good and this one bad." Angela and Hokma were both trapped with Ayin and subjected to his toxicity, yet neither of them can be delegated to any morality beyond being morally grey. Both have done terrible things, all in the name of someone who never gave a shit about them, yet, Hokma embodies the wisdom in the realization that clinging to a hurtful past only ever brings more pain. He knows this, because he watched as Ayin spiraled further and further down the path, as Ayin desperately clung to the dreams of the dead. Ayin trudged over the bodies of others, descending into a hell of his own creation, dragging down Benjamin, who held on to the coat of Ayin, begging and pleading for him to come back to his senses, and they both became trapped in a new kind of purgatory. Angela was created in it. Created as a manifestation of Ayin's refusal to move on, and hurt by his adamancy that she be the way "she used to be", when she couldn't possibly live up to those immense expectations. Hokma, at the end of the story, has been ingrained with wisdom in the ability to look forward. He's seen the bloodied, white-knuckled hands that come with holding onto the past, something that can never be changed.

Having this video on my "watch later" playlist for at least 6 months is undoubtedly one of the factors that eventually got me to come back and finish the Ruina despite having fallen off of it several times over the span of two years. I really enjoyed this video. Hokma was always my favorite but I felt at times I had difficulty understanding the full width of his character. Discussion about him always struggled too since everytime I'd try to talk seriously with my ProjMoon friends about him, I'd get hit with the "Hokma Balls + Rosarch Exploding gif" without fail. I think he gets overlooked a lot despite having one of the most impactful parts of LC. Additionally his conversations with Angela in Ruina were some of the more enlightening ones that actually got me to finally start feeling more meaningful sympathy and compassion for her than I had expected after being I had been bitter and annoyed with her for so long. Maybe seeing "The Eye Embracing the Past" take steps to move forward told me I should too. Please continue your creative pursuits and analysis on things you are passionate about.

Friggin, THANK YOU! God, I feel happy with this, since I am a stout believer in Hokma being a fantastic character (in a group of already fantastic characters each in their own way). I do hope we see him (and by extension the rest of the gang) in more media. I remember hearing that we'd get a game for the Distortion Detective novel (or maybe I'm wrong?) so we will get to see at least a bit of Benjamin when it comes to the smoke wars. Perhaps we'll see the gang trough the gacha system that will inevitably be part of the Limbus Company game or, maybe in the future we'll have another game centered around the group somewhat with some kind of dungeon crawler based in the outskirts of the city, which I hope will be a thing. Like c'mon, you can't tell me we won't get a game set entirely outside the city, it'd be madness. Imma sub to you, by the by. Hopefully you'll continue making videos! Also Hokma has the best floor music in LoR, my mind cannot be dissuaded from that.

I'm very glad this exists. I'm very much obsessed with Carmen and Ayin, but you've absolutely succeeded in making me reevaluate Benjamin/Hokma. Awesome essay, and I hope you keep channelling your love this way. I wonder if we'll learn something more about all of their fate in Limbus or the next game.

My only beef with Benjamin is that he could have helped Angela a LOT more if he just sacrificed a few cycles chatting with her. They both remember the cycles anyway, it's the only thing that the rewind would not be able to stop. Angela knows this, which is why she is so defensive around him.

This is one of my few comfort video essays. I always felt something for Hokma that I couldn’t quite word out, but you perfectly nailed what I thought and expanded even more. I tried being lowkey, but this character analysis is just too awesome and the way you love Hokma a normal amount is so awesome^2. After I first watched this video essay, I followed your twitter account. Apologies if this is putting pressure, but I just know that video is also gonna be one LIMBILLION DOLLARS of awesome. As someone who also loves PMoon a normal amount, I appreciate this video very much. I can’t wait to send this video to my friends once I successfully indoctrinate them to the PMoon cult👍

Video essays like this really help to process the beautiful, daunting and complex journeys that are LobCorp & Library of Ruina. Because of this, I was able to think over how I truly felt about Benjamin/Hokma's character and come to a newfound understanding & appreciation of both him as well as Ayin. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!

thanks for this video! i stumbled across it while watching some of the limbus co previews and it was great since i've been meaning to give more thought to the least analyzed of the original trio. the video chapter art - mainly the bathtub and angela standing at the desk, with benjamin hiding. oh gosh. kind of a gut punch, in the best way. you did great. also please inform me what OST that is during those segments because i recognize it and i'm slightly losing my mind over not being able to place it. i recognize some of the other background music and not just from the copyright claim though, good taste op

You know I always thought it was just the Hokma body during L Corp that retained all the memories, but if that included Benjamin as well. Well then yeah he is one of if not the most mentally resilient and persistent, because normal human beings probably shouldn't keep their sanity during a roughly 10000 year time loop
@longphan7656
@longphan7656 Жыл бұрын
well to be fair, he did finally have a meltdown in the end just like Binah They are forced to stay sane for way longer than other characters. and if its true like what the vid said, his motivation went from "stoping Ayin because its morally wrong" to "stoping Ayin because this hell has now become his home" Overall, Hokma, Binah and A are definitely insanely well written including everything they represent

Now that we know Hokma/Benjamin's Kindness, Sacrifices and Influence towards the Story/Script may I ask one thing..... Is Ayin the Bad Guy? Is Carmen the Bad Guy? I know Angela is but of a troubled child in an enclosed space forced to experience millenias of resets/years. I just want to know if any of them were the bad guy?
@CyJayVT
@CyJayVT Жыл бұрын
To further explain: Carmen albeit a very charismatic happy fragile character on another perspective she manipulated people to join her and in result unintentionally burdened Ayin after her depressive + suicidal moments While Ayin on the other hand, had spiraled down and made so many chaotic decisions for the sake of Carmen's Goals which caused pain to so many people around him and Angela.
@hydrojoy
@hydrojoy Жыл бұрын
@@CyJayVT good question! the story of lor and lc are very, very complex when it comes to motivations. there's no straightforward "bad guy", everyone has done horrible things, including benjamin. ayin only seems to take on the role of the "bad guy" in this story, because he wholeheartedly believed the ends justified the means. if this project, no matter how horrible to a select few people, would heal the entire city they lived in, it was worth it no matter the cost. it's like the trolley problem- would you kill one person to save the lives of thousands of others? ayin just had to be the one flipping the switch, and he believed he should be the one to do so, while carmen could not, succumbing to her guilt. so, really, there's no good or bad guy as straightforward as a villian. the only bad guy that's as straightforward is the Head themselves, for perpetuating this pain and suffering and doing absolutely nothing about it
