I also had a broken relationship with my dad. Because my parents had divorced when I was a baby, by age 14, I had only seen and barely spent time with my dad. He was prone to anger and impatience, and truck driver, and a real macho man. So when I moved with him at age 14, it was not a great time for the next 4 years until I was 18 and left to go into the military. Years later, my dad, filled with regret, often reflected on the damage he had caused with his children. He tended to treat his daughters fairly well, one in particular (the youngest), but his step son was with him from age 5, and he did not treat him well at all. I was not there, but I know, when he grew up, he did not let his children have anything to do with my dad (his only dad that he ever knew). Very sad story... tragic reality. My dad is gone now, but the last decade or so, I had good times playing golf with my dad and visited him often... forgiveness is a beautiful healing prescription. It is easier to forgive another when you REALLY see your own knuckle-headed-ness.

The Lord's prayer: forgive us _as_ we forgive others. It seems the two are connected. I would suggest in both directions. Our ability to accept forgiveness is determined by how we forgive . I think being forgiven is activated by how we pass it on. That is, forgiveness is an active phenomena not static, it is a constant flow not a one time deal even though our sins were paid for in one act.
