@@teetaunjj7894 yes, I would agree John Lord's Hammond B-3 was definitely a big part of it but, I will still argue, when they really broke big with the release of Machine Head, it was Blackmore's riffs that mostly caught peoples ears. While this is true, it is also true that Gillan is correct. Blackmore walked away of his own desire decades ago. The band, though of course continuing to play that material, has moved on. Blackmore is like an astronomical black hole. It must get tiresome for virtually everyone that ever worked with him to constantly get peppered with questions about him, or about perhaps reuniting with him.

Ritchie did suggest a few years ago that rather than re-join Deep Purple, it would be a good idea for him to just do one final gig with them as a thank you to the fans. Steve Morse did actually say that he wouldn't mind stepping to one side so that they could do this, but the rest of them turned it down, so if they won't have him back for one gig, they're never going to have him back for a full tour, it ain't gonna happen. And Ritchie wouldn't want to do a full tour with them anyway. It's kinda crazy that they still ask Ian Gillan this question, when he's repeatedly said no. I must admit though, I'm struggling to see why a one-off gig with Ritchie would be disrespectful to the current line-up. Sounds like a well-rehearsed excuse to me!

One show as a thank you to the fans would have been great before Lord died. All the bickering with these bands is a shame. They’re all at a age now that by the time they put differences aside (if possible) it’s too late cause someone dies. Case in point, either Gilmour or Waters will die before they work together again

For a performance, even a one-time one, you need rehearsals, contracts and a playlist, it's one thing when a musician joins during a concert and everyone makes a purely improvisational jam, and another thing when this is agreed in advance is another responsibility.

Ian is NOT very honest. His ego kept Blackmore from the RRHoF. This BS about "disrespecting" the current band is BS too. Morse said he'd be happy if there was a one off concert with Blackmore. I think Simon would feel the same way. What about respecting the fans? What about respecting yourselves and stop playing song Blackmore wrote the music for? His music doesn't disrespect the band, but him playing some of his songs with them does? BS Ian!

Ritchie should just invite Glover, Paice, and Gillan spend an afternoon in his mancave for a cookout. Brats, pizza and beer. Tell their stories, have the instruments set up in case they feel up to playing. Have Steve Morse pop up on Zoom to say hi from Florida. Have Joe Lynn, David Rosenthal and Chuck Burgi pop in (maybe Billy Joel can be guest keyboard guy) and Rondinelli as well. I'd rather see them reconnect and get along, than let money be why they're forcing themselves in the same room with each other.

How do I respond to this without sounding critical, or cynical? I grew up with Deep Purples, but stopped listening to them after Burn. Perfect Strangers was surprisingly quite good for a reunion album, although i thought Ian did an excellent job as Black Sabbath's singer for the only album he was on. Years ago, (I can't remember the year, exactly, but it was the year Bananas was released) I saw a configuration of Deep Purple with a configuration of Thin Lizzy where they performed the Machine Head album in it's entirety. Now, I'm not one of those stalwarts who think a band should pack it in after their so called "Glory Days" and if the new generation of fans likes the current line up, and the new music they put out, so be it. It's an honest living, and everybody is a good musician, but, that being said, the classic line up will ALWAYS be, for me at least, Richie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Jon Lord, and Roger Glover, as that was the classic line up, and they put out some of the best music ever at that time. I think it's best to just let sleeping dogs lie, and let fans like myself remember the old days, and the good times, but if Deep Purple want to carry on in the configuration as it stands, I don't begrudge a band to keep making an honest living, especially if they still enjoy it. Maybe it's for the best that Richie Blackmore keeps doing the Richie Blackmore thing, whatever that might be at the moment. Besides, as much as people are going to hate me for saying it, it's just not the same without Jon Lord.

Bananas was the 2003 album. Purple toured with Lizzy (and Styx) in 2007 (we went to the Cardiff show). I think the Machine Head-based tour was 2006, but could be wrong. Anyway, your points are good ones. For me, the Morse line-up was excellent, and they've at last moved on from the Mk.2 songbook live. Steve Morse only left because of his wife's illness. The new guy seems good - very good, actually - but they're already on the Long Goodbye tour. As a long-term Purple fan, I wouldn't want a reunion with Blackmore. He's happy and productive; Purple are happy and productive. The last Rainbow line-up was so much better than it would've been with egotist Joe Lynn Turner. Let sleeping dogs lie, as you said. 🙂

Who really wants Ritchie back in DP? Seriously, that ship sailed years ago. He doesn’t want to be back in, and they don’t want him. If anyone heard Ritchie’s Rainbow “reunion” shows, it’s plain to hear that he’s lost more than a step or two. It’s hard to play with the ferocity we all remember him for when he’s 70+ years old. Sorry, but how enjoyable would it be at this point? It’d would be purely nostalgic. Not even good nostalgia.

Screaming and kicking ass, not for quite some time. Same as RB's playing. Slower, more low key. But can still play nice stuff. If they were to get on stage ever again , even for a one off song, my opinion, it should be When a Blind Man Cries. Gillan can still sing that well, and RB could certainly pull off a nice bluesy solo. ( But it would prob be Smoke, which would work also. But, the big BUT is, it'll unfortunately never happen. ). Why has this question gained any traction? Purple and Ritchie now would be a huge mistake. He doesn't want to rejoin. They don't want him to rejoin. All he seems to have said said was, "A one-off would be ok," with a silent "I suppose". That's just a pat answer to a now-tedious question. It didn't happen at the Hall of Fame event. I'd like the Ronnie Romero line-up of Rainbow to play again, but I'm not expecting that. Purple are happy with Purple, Blackmore is happy with Blackmore's Night. These questions get thrashed out until they lose all meaning. The Foreigner-with-Gramm diehards are writing the same "It's not Foreigner" stuff on every video, and it was tedious 15 years ago. Now, it brings on catatonia, like a Trump speech. Hey, someone ask Robert Plant if he'll rejoin Zeppelin! Let it rest.

Gillan and Blackmore are two completely different animals , Gillan is the rock star , Blackmore the musician. Blackmore along with Jon Lord were the creative force behind Deep Purple , Gillan’s ego wouldn’t allow him to recognise that . Sadly the relationship broke down irreparably after perfect strangers, with Gillan preferring to party rather than write , and Blackmore becoming increasingly pissed off . Personally, they should have knocked it on the head after Perfect strangers and perhaps reconvened after a few years , instead of Gradually diminishing the legacy of one of the greatest bands in rock .

Am assuming the question was, Did you consider asking Ritchie to rejoin before asking Simon McBride to go permanent? It's a semi-humorous question and a semi-humorous answer. Some fans seem to think Blackmore's chomping at the bit to rejoin his old band, but I'm sure he's not. Blackmore's Night is his priority. Even the Rainbow reunion, great as it was, wasn't permanent (and the fact that we were spared the narcissistic Turner is a continued blessing). The Mk.2 reunion worked the first time, worked musically but not personally the second time, and those of us who were too young to see Purple between '68 and '76 got to see them. Even the Turner album and tour were good. The Morse era was successful and great fun to witness. No complaints. Most of the media ignore Deep Purple and discredit them. That's the real scandal.

@@ianberry1713 it should have been Coverdale... he was the better of the two.. and for Turner to be involved, it would have been more of a rainbow reunion than a Purple reunion with Ritchie. That's not what I would want to see. Ritchie is an enigma and I think he likes it that way. We'd have a better chance seeing Mick Taylor playing with the stones again- oh wait, we already have. Ok, we'd have a better chance of living on the sun than having Blackmore get involved with purple without some kind of drama that would end before it began.

No Ritchie, no Deep Purple. Doogie White made a very succinct point in a recent interview. Ritchie chose him when he could have had anyone. DW said you get to flourish under him and then he sets you free. David Coverdale is always grateful for his time in DP and forged a great career afterwards. Many others have benefitted from his stewardship. I find IG's attitude perplexing. He was a talent but RB made him great. When he left, Ritchie made DC great. He made Ronnie Dio great. When DP reformed in the '80's the music on Perfect Strangers was incredible, as was House of Blue Light. A bit of gratitude please, IG.

As big a Ritchie fan as I am, and as much as I believe Morse did an admirable job filling his shoes, they couldn't have a better player than Simon McBride who is just rocking it big time. Simon is the best possible guitarist they could have right now. He fits into Purple perfectly, like a Lego piece snapping into place. He is his own player with a great style, but also has enough respect for the classic material to honor it as it should be. I'm very happy with the current Purple lineup. I recently watched the infamous 1993 Come Hell or High Water concert where Ritchie Blackmore was being an emo kid. He refused to play on stage with the band and deliberately missed a lot of the signature guitar riffs and solos in the playlist. Jon Lord had to do extra work to help fill the void. Blackmore quit shortly after. I have a huge respect for the guitarist but that was so disrespectful and unprofessional of him. Judging on what Ian Gillan said in this interview, it seems the wounds have healed over the years but yeah, it'd be extremely difficult for both parties to join forces again.
