Thanks for the video ... very informative. I have a pair of og royals from back in the day sitting in a dark closet collecting dust. Not in any rush to get rid of them ... it's just been a wild ride from having these shoes from high school that were barely used (they actually weren't comfortable at all and thus only saw maybe 1/3 season of hoops action before being retired for something else).

I'm definitely for keeping the retros as close to the originals as possible with sensible tweaks like upgrading materials to extend the lifespan...like switching the painted foam on the collars for leather. Some people tend to just rant about wanting everything to stay the same....but I'm positive it they got what they wished for, they'd be cussing up a storm and saying nike is cutting corners. LOL!!! And yes....my gaiter on my original 16s broke...but I usually wear them without it anyway so it didn't bother me as much, but I agree with you.

Is it straight foam just painted or foam with synthetic material over it? I’ve seen 1994 Chicago’s with peeling collars and that’s a synthetic collar

It could be a synthetic overlay or a heavy paint application since the outer doesn’t deteriorate much like the inside does. It seems that leather straps are built around the foam collar. The Off-White series has really “exposed” how the AJ 1 is built so it’s really cool to see how the shoe is in raw form.

@@mjo23dan Yeah, I wasn't too much bothered by the Nike check material... I just didn't like that they were mid tops instead of high. I took an L back in 2013 on the Royal's. Some say that year was the worst rendition of the colorway.

Yeah I didn't pick those up. Plus at the time it was the first time since 01 they retroed and so it was super overpriced. If I'm to rank them I'd go OG > 2017 > 2001 > 2013

Unfortunately, I've never copped a pair of Royal 1's out of the store. I did cop the Grey / Metallic Silver 1's from 2001 though... & was able to buy a pair of Royal's off of a friend later that same year.

@@TWIZZTHEWHIZKID The 2001s were actually high tops (9 lace holes/openings, not 7 like there usually is). It just looks like it because the ankle collar is so thick. They're actually higher than they look.

It is the closest of the retros so far but until Nike comes out with an 85 cut of them, then that will be the closest.
