A few weeks pass after his driver's find, and Diesel's work and mood have vastly improved. The big engines aren't convinced, however, especially James. But Bear has a more understanding view of Diesel.

I love how realistically this was portrayed. Given the severity of Diesel’s actions, it makes sense that not everyone would find themselves able to forgive and trust him immediately. And those who did and didn’t forgive them, when/how they forgave him, and their reasonings why are so perfect! Percy makes complete sense to be the first to break the silence and forgive; he may be very grumpy at times, but he has a kind heart. Thomas feels so perfectly in character, like *THIS* is classic series Thomas, at least by later seasons; a bit rough around the edges, but with a genuine heart of gold and really cares for other’s feelings, and with a good sense of humor and able to acknowledge his ego/pride and not let it consume him. His willingness to back Percy’s judgment, and his caring for Diesel’s caring, is just *chef’s kiss* perfect. Following up on my praises of the most perfect depiction of Thomas’ character, Henry is perfect. The amount of layers this story showcases of his character is phenomenal. I love how every aspect of his character from seasons 1-7 are perfectly rolled together to make this believable characterization. His forgiveness of Diesel is surprising yet the most rewarding of everything. If only Thomas and Percy forgave Diesel at that meeting, it very well would’ve felt like a hollow victory, but Henry’s forgiveness makes it a win and sparks that hope that maybe the others would come around someday. Additionally, Henry’s relationships and dynamics with James, Gordon, and Bear is so well handled and feels like Awdry’, Mitton, and Alcroft personally wrote his role in this script. I can’t give much higher praise than that! Moving on to those who forgave Diesel later on, this also makes so much sense. Gordon is prideful and often full of himself and has a hard time letting down his walls to show his kinder side, and often it doesn’t pass his mind to think about other’s perspectives unless it’s thrown in front of him. The way he is handle in this entire story, being the quiet change, struggling to make an actual stand against his friend (James) and to be this humble kind engine. He struggles to admit what he’s feeling aloud, but he shows an olive branch in other ways by casually making conversation with Diesel, making an actual effort to show acknowledgment of him. From Gordon, that speaks volumes. Then we have Duck, who has very good reasons to not trust Diesel or ever forgive him, and we SEE that tug of war in him. In spite of it all, though, we see that trust forming. Though we don’t hear any words, the facial expressions during their small interaction after the meeting tell a story in itself, and it’s very positive! Personally, I read into it that Duck did forgive him outright, as I feel it fits the emotion shown best, but whatever the case there’s mending happening in that broken and strife-ridden relationship and there’s at least a casual friendship being sown. Then Sir Topham Hatt really feels like the father of the whole railway, rolling stock and human alike. As such, while he has a very kind and tender heart, he takes every matter gravely seriously so he can best care for everyone’s wellbeing. So it makes sense that he, of all people, has to sit and reflect on this confession and change before coming to a conclusion (very reminiscent of his depiction at the end of Brake Van). Then we see him approach Diesel, and that air of authority is there. Then we see his smile and everyone knows that Diesel is forgiven and given a place on the railway. How a still image of a 3D model of a wooden figure can give off so much tender warmth, I have no clue, but it does. Then we get to the two who can’t make amends, at least not yet. Fergus makes the absolute most sense. He nearly was killed due to Diesel, and that’s traumatizing! The amount of hurt he has is second to no one except maybe Sir Topham Hatt due to all the backstabbings. Yet we see the most conflict in his face out of everyone. There’s a genuine, heartfelt reaction to his apology, but he just… can’t forgive him, not yet at least. Maybe someday with time they’ll be able to mend. Finally, we have James. James is really the villain of this arc, and, while Henry may want to believe the best of his friend, it really does come down to prejudice in his case. I think the story handles this topic phenomenally, and its subtleness (not having every scene including a character/action blatantly saying this is racism) makes its message more clear and thought provoking. In the end, he still chooses not to forgive Diesel, despite having the absolute least reason to hold something against him, but that emotion on his face shows that there’s at least something in him that may be beginning to question why he is like this. It’s brillant, subtle storytelling that is expertly crafted throughout this story! Finally, I just had to bring up how Bear, Diesel’s Driver, and even Donald and Douglas are used. Bear’s role is ingenious and so well done! It expands on his limited character in the RWS and feels like a true Awdry character that isn’t just a clone of Boco. Mad props for also taking advantage of Henry’s and Bear’s relationship too. That feels like the ribbon that was needed to tie this story together. Diesel’s Driver is just phenomenal. Like, I don’t even have words to describe how perfectly his role is played and the characterization is amazing. His jab at James was my first introduction to him, so without other context it did leave me assuming a slightly more negative light of him (possibly as a slight misogynist), but having the entire episode as hindsight now, I can laugh at his jest with full comfort and reassurance. Seriously, his conversation with Sir Topham Hatt was perfect and a highlight of the episode for me. Then we have Donald and Douglas, who don’t say anything at all, but their presence is felt because of their history with diesels. It is said that, after James, they are the most prejudice against diesels, so their silent watching of and reaction to Bear’s rant/speech also speaks volumes to their characterizations. It gives a seed for them to also reconsider their thoughts on diesels too. Finally, finally, we have Diesel. Brilliant, just brilliant. I’ve missed the other stories building up to this episode, but the portrayal here, the reasons given, the character work done, it’s brilliant. No more words can be said than I am excitedly looking forward to the future of his character. Brilliant episode mate. Just brilliant. Subscribed

You're the one who wrote and directed this script and showcased the nuance in these characters. It's your work that I'm digging into and finding praise for. A round of applause to you for this art! I know you said in other replies that you don't want to continue this story, at least currently, which is understandable. The possible story threads left in this episode contain a lot of potential for great works, even if they are just left to the imagination to fill in. I understand not wanting to be tied to a predetermined story path, but I hope you haven't fully sworn off potential follow-ups someday. I look forward to seeing whatever you put out in the future. This is REALLY well put together. Everybody always remembers Devious Diesel. Diesel's whole arc to get to this point is incredible. To try and redeem yourself after All the stuff that went on like he did , takes Years . This was whole breakdown and rebuilding was bound to happen at some point....and I'm GLAD this story is now in that time frame. Bear or Boco, are only the ones who logically could BE the one to come to Diesel's defense like THIS. One can most certainly feel Diesel's strife and sympathize , yet still not condone what he did. As a person who has been through LOW lows and lingered there for time in life, this here genuinely GOT to Me, in the sense of him wanting to redeem himself SO Bad. Overworking to the brink of exhaustion but realizing seemingly no matter what or how much he does it still isn't enough to some because of what you did in the past. Feeling the arrogance , conceit, vanity, anger, fear, and Hatred creeping back around.......setting itself into attack pounce stance to Make it ALL WORSE. Souls like that of Bear in this story, Do exist..... to anybody who might genuinely need to hear this. Be grateful for Friends like that if you have them. To anybody saying Thomas is a JUST a show for kids? Awdry knew what he was doing with these characters and it's FOR ALL AGES. Awdry Made this for the People. Kids can appreciate and learn from it, yes. But adults are sorely missing on going back to watch this franchise and it's Continuity. There are amazing arcs and stories to take life lessons from no matter what age you are That is why I love this Franchise So Dearly. If you also really, really think of it with broader context, The Railway Series, and Thomas and Friends is a little bit of a kid friendly soap opera, In the sense of the "drama" we Always felt we Had to tune into. Crashes, arguments, fights, sibling -like rivalry, and straight accidents . We, as fans felt like we connected to these characters in some way and the sheer quality of this Story and other videos in the last few years , has reaffirmed my love for this franchise to see that it isn't going anywhere . Thank You for creating stories of this Caliber and may your success take you further to greatness. Long live the Railways Series and Thomas and Friends!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Its a shame that this magnificent franchise completely lost its direction when it came to TV media after season 5. Unfortunately, people avoid reading books. Their only perception of Thomas is through the TV series which has been so bad for so long (except for that brief period when Andrew Brenner was in charge of the show but by then, the damage was already done).

This story including Infutile, feels like the proper ending of Diesel's Saga. Of course, Springtime For Diesel is good and all, but i feel like this one would just be a tad bit better, honestly. The adaptation is very good, and the music is fitting. Great job, LWP.

I really enjoyed the moments of awkward silence that permeated through the tension, you gave time to make the emotions take real shape in the story and ensure the viewers felt the nuances from each engine. I especially enjoyed the silence between Fergus and Diesel - it showed how despite a heartfelt apology, forgiveness couldn’t always be given. You aimed for a partially happy engine who dealt with realistic consequences and those enhanced the story fantastically. Good job mate.

"A shunter's job is a primitive construct. It's literally in the name, a shunter's job is to shunt the trucks. There's nothing to think about." Easy for you to say. You've never run a local freight. (Note, even when Gordon is put on goods duty he's generally running fast drag freights, which are yard-to-yard. Locals/turns are stopping freight trains that actively exchange cars at industrial sidings. It's more common in the US since we don't have small dedicated yards for local service along our main lines like the UK does.) As for Diesel, even when he was devious, he still had one of the best work ethics of any engine on Sodor. He may have been a jerk at the time, but he got the job done.

@@samsea0489 *One of the best And here's the thing - at least in RWS and the original TTTE series, you don't see him slacking off or refusing to do his job like half the steam engines. Sure, he's mainly a shunter, but shunting's a pretty tricky job all things considered - it takes a lot of strategizing to figure out how you're going to do things efficiently with the fewest moves and in the least amount of time. I'll give you that it's not typically a power-demanding job, at least not unless you're switching a 20-car local on an industrial spur, but it's far from an easy job.

This is like my origin story of Rosie & her trademark lavender livery. She came to Sodor from North Wisconsin, in the railroad’s red livery, and whilst the little engines, Henry, Emily, Edward & Murdoch treated Rosie kindly, the other big engines, the diesels and the trucks were rude and unkind to her, calling her ‘weak’, ‘lazy’ and ‘slow’ and treated her like a slave…and were unaware she was suffering from being under-maintained and lack of overhaul. After she went on strike for her rights, TFC put things right and offered Rosie her trademark coat as compensation…

Amazingly, Diesel was not sent back this time around, as Sir Topham Hatt told Thomas and Fergus he would move Diesel to the smelters (possibly because he might have not seen any point in bringing Diesel in as a spare engine and then sending him back for his bad behaviour); Diesel has remained on the North Western Railway since. I know you probably won't believe this but it's a reason I discovered for you to know nonetheless.

I really like Diesel’s arc here, this really feels like it could be in the show or possibly the RWS (probably not but still). I like the apology scene with engines like Percy, Thomas, Edward and Henry forgiving him but the rest don’t which is understandable after everything he’s done in the past, (though I think Duck was the one who made Diesel the way he is because of the prank) but I like that in the montage it’s implied that the others are slowly see that Diesel has changed and probably has been bought by Sir Topham Hatt at the end. The redemption arc I always wanted as a kid. This episode was masterful in every way. The montage at the end brought a tear to my eye. And honestly the seemless transition of diesels theme to a remix of it with stand by me was honestly the best part for it all. Thank you for this.

Man this was beautiful👏👏👏 honestly if the OG series redemption arc for diesel, I don’t think it would match up to this. It’s nice that most of em found it in their hearts to forgive him and especially duck since he was the one diesel hurt the most. And it’s understandable that Ferguson and James aren’t ready to forgive him yet, but even though we couldn’t catch what they said, it’s safe to say that they just need a little time before they’re both ready to forgive him so there’s still hope😉

A very interesting take on redemption and forgiveness. The concept is ideal for a character like Diesel and makes him more complex and less of a single-trope character. The same can be said for all the others too, you kept them faithful to each how they are portrayed when it comes to their individual personalities. This is why I really liked the idea of James being the one who chooses not to forgive Diesel in the end, they are civil. But it is clear that they are only that and nothing more. This is fine, however, the question remains can James live with his decision?

Honestly, one thing I like is the exchange between Duck and Diesel, even though its entirely through facial expressions. Because Duck almost certainly would realize as much as Diesel's apology is a long time coming... he started it. I imagine that was the crux of their... discussion.
