The fact that the flap was not only still there, but STILL FUNCTIONAL is insane! Starship is the one. We are going back to moon and mars. We will finally live the fantasy dreamed up during the space race, colonies and stations throughout the solar system. Imagine seeing the dawn of the space age in your lifetime!

They turn the Grid Fins slightly before the hot staging to use the exhaust of the ship to help the booster flip.

Lots of folks noting that Booster's landing burn started late. I think what's being forgotten is that they had an engine out during launch. While Starship can still launch with a few engines missing, you can bet it still changes the timings of the flight plan.

Yup. Still got up to the same speed for stage separation, but it took a bit longer. I wonder if/how that affected the landing location.

Also changes weight. They plan on that fuel being burned off and we are talking about a lot of fuel. Both takeoff and the landing. You had 1/33 worth of the take off fuel and 1/16 of the landing.

It landed perfectly.. have you seen the video?
@Asterra2
@Asterra2 4 ай бұрын
@@Bryan-Hensley I think you missed the context. All of the flight plan milestones had predefined timings. The folks who reacted, including in this video, knew these timings and were waiting on them. Some of them, including in this video, grew alarmed when the expected milestones ended up arriving late. The one pertinent to my original observation is the timing of Booster's landing burn.
@Bryan-Hensley
@Bryan-Hensley 4 ай бұрын
@@Asterra2 that's not a problem. I don't know why you think it is. Did you not watch the video, the computers did fine adjusting to the differences, one engine out just causes the other engines to throttle up higher or run a little longer. Heck starship landed almost perfectly with parts of the flaps missing. This is self adjusting driving technology carried over from Tesla. The computer can "change its mind"..

The hotstage jettison was also probably to increase stability as that is 10 tons of solid steel moving the center of mass much higher on the vehicle. Bad for aerodynamic stability all my fellow KSP nerds know.

Yeah, they even say in the commentary that the Hot Staging Ring was an ad hoc addition that will be built into the Block 2 boosters. Not a separate piece.

Also to reduce mass.. Since they need more propellent to land... In next verisons the tanks will be big.. So they don't need to jettison hot stage

HSR is Jettisoned because it was an addon not baked into the design of SH. So the Extra 10 Tons of the HSR eats into the Landing margin of the original design that didn't have to contend with an extra 10 tons of booster dry mass. Next Integration of SH "Booster V2" will be optimized for more landing margin "Larger Landing Tanks and stretched booster tanks" and having the HSR Fully integrated into the Design.

All i could think of when i saw the re-entry and the flap coming apart was that must have been what Columbia must have looked like as she began to break apart on her final re-entry. I just wish that the shuttle had been as durable as starship was. I often wonder if the roll program had been different and the vehicle had rolled to that side less if the wing could have held together.

4:27 The clogging was due to methane ice. The autogenous repressurization system feeds some methane back into the LOX tank and that can form ice due to the LOX being much colder. The internals of the LOX tank now looks more like a colander to filter some ice from getting to the inlets. 5:43 Gridfins align to allow part of the gasses from the ships exhaust to impact the fin and help the booster push away and flip over once separated. They have done this for every hot stage, but that was the clearest view we got of that action so far.

i doubt that it is floating either the ship or booster. any time a falcon9 boost tipped it exploded so they most likely exploded too. from a code perspective i wonder if its smart enough to figure out how much control authority each flap has in the moment and adjusting to that so it can try and get to its predetermined area / orientation.
