I love that the movie does such a good job of setting the story up as a love story between Ishida and Shoko, and while that is still kinda true, it’s really about Ishida realizing it’s ok to love himself again, despite all of his horrible mistakes from the past. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance, and the people who deserve it the most are the ones that struggle the most with giving it to themselves.

It's unfortunate tat the whole dream scene (before Shoya wakes up) is misunderstood by most people. Through the dream, Shoya is saying goodbye to Shouko, because he's about to die. The reason why Shouko runs to the bridge and starts crying, is because she realizes that Shoya has said goodbye and is now dead. But (through the koi fish, which have spiritual importance in Japanese culture), Shoya hears Shoko crying, and wakes up. Also, in the Japanese version, he says: "kimi ni ikiru no tetsudatte hoshii" which is best translated as: "I want you to help me live" instead of "teach me how to live." Tetsudatte (from the Japanese verb tetsudau) can be translated as "to assist" or "to help" (but not as "to teach," which would be "oshieru/oshiete").

I've always wondered why she didn't go to the hospital instead, so in her mind he was actually already dead by the time she made it to the bridge. I proudly will admit tho that I caught on with the koi fish

excellent choice! I cried like a baby every time I saw this beautiful movie, I would say that it is one of the best movies I have seen in terms of what is "human", I love how it deals with empathy, depression on certain levels, mistakes, and problems and the personal/emotional growth of each of the characters. without a doubt one of the best morals to symbolize that we all have something we deal with, and the importance of having compassion on ourselves. after all. we all want a bit of happiness and positive things in our life and circle.

Naoka Ueno is a very misunderstood character and I feel like she, alongside Shoya, represent invisible disability. Shoya comes off as heavily ADHD coded and later as a young adult has what seems to be CPTSD or some other kind of major anxiety disorder. We don't really know Ueno's full story, but the fact that she mentioned no one knew what she was going through as a kid and her very atypical family unit seemingly with no parents in the mix could imply some traumatic early childhood events. Early trauma can lead to personality disorders and she seems like she might potentially have BPD. She might also resent Shoko because she saw her receiving help and accomodations from the adults in their lives while she was left to suffer in silence. Disabilities are everywhere and so many people have it so rough. Some make it hard on yourself, some make it hard on others, most do both. In the end, the movie's message is to try to learn about yourself, forgive yourself, and to learn about others and to forgive them. To come together, understand, and accomodate. A lot of people hate Ueno, but I simply can't.

In the manga, we get some insight into Ueno. She really liked Shoya from when they were young. His energy and love of life was something she admired so much. So when Shoko came into class, though she was nice at first, became annoyed by her constant need of help. When Miki amplified Shoko's "issues" to the rest of the class, this became a catalyst to grow her annoyance, and when Shoya started to bully her, she felt like she wanted to support him. When this then turned around and everyone attacked Shoya, she told herself that she did not have the courage to defend Shoya and ended up joining the bandwagon. This guilt was left in her and she blamed Shouko for creating the situation that distanced her and Shoya and made Shoya into an introvert. So later, when she saw Shoko and Shoya together, this enraged her even more. Overall, her feelings of blaming Shoko for this whole situation in that had she never came into their lives, her relations with Shoya would have remained positive. This of course does not forgive Ueno for what she did but does explain the reason for the anger she had against Shoko. Overall, the one that does not seem to learn much from this situation is Miki and she still seems to throw anyone under the bus to make herself look good. She cannot get herself out of the "I am the one person who understands and cares" sort of situation and if that position is threatened, she becomes desperate to make everyone feel she is in the right. I always love that one part when Shoko was young, where during the sing-along, she deliberately moved her mouth without singing earlier than the song, knowing Shoko was watching her to know when to start singing. Then when Shoko sang out of step with everyone, it was Miki that brought this up, showing how Shoko ruined everyone's experience but Miki somehow corrected it, making people annoyed at Shoko even more. And later of course, it is Miki that spreads Shoya's past that gets everyone to alienate him once again.

@TannerEatRadio I forgot which chapter it was but once ueno gets absolutely pummeled by shouko’s mom, she says something about about sharing similar violent resolutions to anger as “that women” and feeling really guilty/scared about hurting shouko (for fear of her own behavior or shoya’s reaction). It varies through translations so I don’t really know for sure. I always just assumed she had an abusive mom or something.

A factor with Ueno is that she is dyslexic, which is why she immediately rejects the idea of communicating through Shoko's notebook, as it will make her problem obvious to everyone. Things go downhill from there.

Ueno was always the one helping Nishimiya in class and so she couldn’t be focus in class and the teacher was always a piece of shit to his students, so it doesn’t matter, what Ueno has done isn’t right but it’s normal for her to be the one who hates the most Nishimiya and for Ueno, Nishimiya shouldn’t only try to be the victim, even thought it’s not the case here, Nishimiya really hates herself, but a lot of people always tries to get attention for them like this, by playing victims, that’s why when Nishimiya tries to fight to repair everything, Ueno starts to get closer To Nishimiya

1:03:30 he didn't jump from the bridge. The people in the school heard about him falling from Nishimiya's balcony and just presumed that he jumped/attempted suicide.
@aagraff603

Shōya absolutely did jump from the bridge -- when he accidentally dropped Shōko's notebook.If you recall, Yuzuru took a picture of it. His whole school found out and he was suspended. He gained a reputation from that incident and became the focus of the rumors. While Kawai might have said something about the balcony incident to his class to make the paper cranes, it is unclear what was said or how wide-spread it was. I think its a clever device by the writing to make you think that they were talking about the latest accident, but if you think about it some more, you realize that they were talking about the earlier event that got him suspended.

Edit: I was mistaken, the Japanese VA isn't actually deaf, just real good at faking it. I couldn't say for sure of every version, but I'm almost certain both the original Japanese and English dubbed versions used actual deaf actresses for Nishimiya Shoko's role. I think the English one might just have a bit of an easier time with pronunciation so she isn't as difficult to understand, but no, she isn't getting better. Also, I feel people excuse Shoko's mom way more than she deserves. Consider that she's had a deaf daughter for 15-17 years and still can't be bothered to learn how to talk to her daughter. The teacher is also a total deadbeat, he only spoke up when the faculty came knocking at his classroom door.

@@raincloud1313Did not say it was "bad". Subpar is that is not up there in terms of the great voice actors in the original language. For ME the English dub sound hollow and lacks emotions. I like some dubbed anime to. But those are only Ghibli movies tbh. It's a opinion of mine that many miss out on great scenes and dialogue when meanings and words gets lost in translation or just changed to fit the western people.

@@raincloud1313 To be stuck up on the reason that shoko's VA is not deaf irl is kinda shocking to hear. Then what about ALL movies done with an actor/VA that plays a part of an deaf/handicap person? Just trash it because they "acted" their role? Makes zero sense. For me personally i would probably die of cringe if they for example dubbed a... let's say, a Marvel movie to my native language. Would not be watchable tbh. And all i was saying, it's a shame that not more narrowminded (often native English/American speakers ) can be bothered to learn to read. God forbid to learn right? I have been kinda neutral in the sub vs dub war , but in MY opinion some movies/series should not be dubbed. And i was polite to wish her that she likes it anyway. It's just that IM not gonna watch her react to it.Simple as that. And like i said before...it's not bad Just subpar to the original.
