They are being let off the hook. Republicans don't care that they'll be "on the record" for killing this motion, in fact that's a positive in the eyes of their demented base who have been convinced Dems tried to and are continuing to try to steel elections. Meanwhile Dems are suppressing their own vote by not passing Build Back Better, let alone canceling student loan debt or raising minimum wage or reforming Obamacare to include a public option, or doing ANY of the things that where promised on the campaign trail and could actually improve the lives of Americans in these hard times. The Senators that need to feel the pressure are not Republican, they are Manchin and Sinema (disappointing Warren didn't call them out by name). But that pressure should have been a hell of a lot more than going "on the record" against a Senate rule (not even against voting rights themselves) over 4 years out from their next Senate races.

How will they be held accountable? The Republican base and even most swing voters want to keep the filibuster. It's only Dem voters and left leaning independents that want to get rid of it. But they're not going to hold anyone accountable, many of them are going to stay at home in the midterms because Dems have gotten absolutely NOTHING passed for them. Not min wage raise, not student loan cancelation, not public option (let alone M4A), not even Build Back Better. As for Manchin and Sinema, their next Senate races are over 4 years away. Even if voters do remember by then (which they tend not to), I'm sure the'll have very cosy corporate lobbyist jobs waiting for them to soften their fall.

When I hear a politician go "I want to back up just a little bit," I usually expect them to reframe the discussion (and question) to their own choosing, and skate around the original question. As much as I like Sen. Warren, for a moment I thought that's what she was doing here... and then she brought the answer around full circle, and beautifully answered "Why hold the vote tomorrow if you don't believe it will pass?" with "Because we need to hold those who are openly hostile to the democratic process accountable."

My fondest memory of the filibuster here in the great state of Alabama was one of our congressmen being at the podium for so very long that he had to request a Jarate.

Imagine if the Republican Senators actually had to physically filibuster instead of just threatening to use it and block a simple majority vote. Entirely different ball game then.

That statement made no sense, so I looked up what a Jarate was. Then the statement made a lot of sense, but I initially wondered if he had to be taken to the hospital or something.

In my country voting is mandatory, this, in some part negates most of Americans issues with voting rights. I long thought it should be voluntary but watching what’s happening in American state legislatures, made me rethink that thought.

I agree. My young adult children complained about having to vote due to legislation, but looking at the lack of 'democracy' in America they no longer disagree with legislation for all to vote. Our country has its issues but the freedom to vote is not one of them.

Mandatory vote +1 , but then make a blank vote possible: the 2 parties in the USA hardly make for a voluntary choice. It’s more like: having to make a choice with a gun to your head.

In Brazil, voting is MANDATORY. If you don't vote, you can have canceled your Social Security Number. If you DON't Wanna vote, you can just Vote NULL or BLANK. You can also, on the election day, Legally Justify the Reason you don't wanna vote and pay a fee of $1.50 and avoid the ballot. I always thought that forcing people to vote was ridiculous. Now, living in Texas for almost a decade and studying the history of voting rights, I am proud of the decision my country made in 1989. The vote should be civic and mandatory so everybody (or a great majority of the country) will be responsible for the country and its leaders instead of seeing one of the top countries on the planet, trying to keep American Citizens from voting for so many decades. Hope it will change someday.

Put it into law that it is mandatory to all USA citizens to vote in every/all elections or there will be a fine of $1,000. Citizens have taken for granted the unique privilege of being a citizen. I have been geared to vote since I watched 70's Nixon on TV as a young child, I was intrigued by the protesting and wanting to know more about what this "thing/entity" was and its importance.

This would only be feasible if Election Day was a day off for everyone. With all the barriers for voting it is impossible for some people in the USA to vote. The fines should be levied against gerrymandering and voting restrictions. I have voted for over 30 years at polling stations within walking distance of my home and with of a wait time of less than 10 minutes. I am not American.

I completely disagree. What if someone doesn’t have a candidate they like? You can’t force someone to vote for something they don’t agree with. Having the ability to NOT vote is just as democratic as having the right TO VOTE. We should never restrict the citizen’s choice to stay out of an election.

Not liking anyone on the ballot isn't really an argument against this, since you can (and some do) vote for no-one at all. There was a case in the midwest where "no-one" won the mayoral race.

If you can't call out the people in your own party that's standing in the way and apply pressure it's over. You will NEVER have 12 Republicans come over in support of this legislation.
