You really did a very respectful and very informative posting of the tragedy. Solo hiking make up the majority of my current hikes and I rarely tell anyone that I going. I’m single but I learned for this post I should find a couple of friends who would allow me to let them know where, when and how long I expect to hike if only for my own protection. So I’m going to do just that starting my next hike. ❤😊

News for this week: two brothers (18 and 20, I believe) who had planned an overnight, had equipment, had a sat comms device, were cold weather equipped, but had multiple exposures to water, ultimately calling for rescue due to hypothermia. The right thing to do, both brothers survived. Can you imagine how it could have gone? horrifying.

Such a sad story. I happen to read it online over the weekend (in Wisconsin). I think it was a good decision to discuss this story. As mentioned, he was an experienced hiker and did the right things. My condolences to his wife and family.

Taylor, the idea of Safety over Summits for a fundraiser is great. I would definitely contribute . I see the alerts on the NH Fish and Game and the Conservation Officers along with the SAR volunteers are the real hero’s in this state. Also, you handled the tragic loss of life with total compassion and respect. Thank you and great job.👍❤️

So sorry for this loss of life. Most falls happen on the descent or return trip. We lose our focus and tend to hurry. Ice conditions change according to elevation and other factors. You take a chance with micro spikes, especially off trail. Any ranger will tell you, full mountaineering boots and full crampons.

That's so sad! My heart goes out to his wife and the rest of the family! Thank you to the search and rescue team that was able to find him! I think your idea about designing a sweatshirt and the profits going to a rescue team is a great idea!

Although I’m in Texas it is interesting to hear about trail conditions in NH. Such a sad outcome for the hiker who died on the trail and a reminder for us all that even a prepared and experienced hiker can run into conditions that are life threatening. Prayers for his family and friends.

Gear for Winter conditions: snowshoes, crampons (better and safer than micro spikes) ice axe (dependent on where you are going, but I always carried it in the winter,) matches, lighter, extra clothes, shelter, sleeping bag, extra food, map & compass, emergency signal, stove. If you are a ultralight packer, stay home in the winter.

My thoughts go out to the hikers family. Never easy to lose one of our community 😢 I had planned on Garfield and Galehead Saturday but conditions were not ideal so I called an audible and just grabbed Garfield. I Grabbed Galehead Sunday but there was 12” of fresh.snow up at the hut and over to the summit. For anyone heading up to elevation, please be ready for winter conditions. Thank you Taylor for talking about this. It’s not easy but it is so important. -Grateful #safetyoversummits

I really enjoy your updates. Something I figured out when I was hiking in NH this past August you might want to mention, in the mountains there isn't great cell service if any at all, I figured out that I could share my location from my IPhone with my wife and daughter through the Find My Device app and connecting to a satellite. There's no charge for it. I would update my location several times during my hike.

Thank you for sharing this story, Taylor. I live in NH and frequently hike with my hiking club in the Whites, and we can and should be reminded of these cautionary stories. Whatever our level of experience, we should be aware of the risk involved in the Whites, especially as the weather gets colder, and your reminder that we leave a hiking plan with a loved one/friend is spot on.

Happy for you and your husband. Glad to hear your baby is doing good and is healthy. I'm surprised to hear that you dont always let your husband or mom know your hiking plans. That's one of the top rules when hiking alone! Some tree huggers will disagree with me but the other top rule when hiking alone is to carry bear mace and a compact revolver

Thank you so much for your discussion around the tragedy. For me, through most of my hiking time, it was always the AMC based in Boston on Pine Street. No internet. No cell phones. Far fewer hikers. Just the good food served there at Pinkham Notch, the volunteer M.D. there at "HoJoe's" ~ The cabin and shelter at the base of Tuckerman's Ravine (The Howard Johnson's Motel chain) ~ sometimes both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. ~ Course all the Huts. (The AMC Hut system). The Zeeland Notch Hut Journals. And well. That was it. Every winter ~ lots of tragedy. Taylor, You definitely have something here. Congratulations on your success and thank you so much on the updates. 〰✨🌿🙏🌿✨〰. Epsom

I have heard so many stories about fatal accidents from people falling while using micospikes. If it is a risky area carry crampons and an ice axe to self arrest. Practice self arrest techniques and even consider roping up if it gets sketchy. Cheers

Indeed a sad story with pain for loved ones. Did the searchers think that he hiked off-trail? Going off-trail raises the risk, one might not even be able to return on the same path - encountering new risks.

What an awful story about the fellow who perished. But, I'm curious - did he die from the fall or was it hypothermia? The press release didn't say - or did I miss it? The change on your face, when talking about your daughter, was more than welcome, and isn't it a great reward when they start smiling? Be well, stay safe. 🥾

Shame about that hiker. You're right, lots of different things can happen out there and unfortunately his story ended in a horrible way. This may help some folks -- I used AllTrails and when I go out on any kind of substantive hike I turn on the Live Share option, which allows my girlfriend to track my progress on trail. I think it updates every five minutes or so so it's not totally real time but it's close enough. I usually also tell her how far I plan on going on approximately when I think I'll be done. Give updates if things change. If worst came to worst at least she'd have an idea of where I was. Hopefully I'll never need it but I am not a young man anymore so one never knows. I did take a serious ankle roll on trail here in CT - not even a tough trail, my stupid foot just landed the wrong way - and that was a wake up. Glad the baby is well.

Micro spikes aren't go to for the Whites. Alpine crampons are needed hands down. Thats just a fact. We use Grivel G10's and G12's we've had for many years. We have Micros too but they are limited so much with steep shear ice.

Hey Nahamsha, Cheetah here … i own Uncle Johnny’s. I wanted to comment and send an update since you mentioned Erwin TN. It was great meeting you last year when you stayed at UJ. Very sorry to hear about the tragedy in your video and my sincere condolences to the family. You probably know this but the bridge in your video is not the Chestoa bridge. That is another bridge in Erwin on the interstate. Here’s a good video from a local of UJ and the chestoa bridge (part of the AT) about 1 month after Helene hit. Big O: kzbin.info/www/bejne/homsfZejiMujf7M UJ Update: I’ve been raising money every way I can to rebuild UJ. I bought UJ in January 2022 and was working to make it better since. Most of my, Drew’s, Jackie’s, Brandon’s, and many work-for-stays hard work was wiped out when the Chestoa Bridge collapsed and UJ was flooded. Many of your viewers might have noticed Cabins G and H are gone in Big O’s video. When I bought UJ, those cabins were uninhabitable, but we spent months renovating them and hundreds of hikers stayed in them over the past two years. They are gone now - we had to tear them down. The foundation of our store and hostel was also compromised - we started tearing those down yesterday and the job is being completed as I type this on Thanksgiving Day. I know so many neighbors and fellow business owners that also suffered tremendous losses. Despite all that I have much to be thankful for because there is an overwhelming outpouring of support and generosity. We will rebuild and it’s because so many people are helping. Construction on the new UJ starts next week. Thank you to you and everyone out there expressing concern for UJ, the hiking community, the AT, and the town of Erwin. Happy Thanksgiving! Cheetah P.S. Gofundme - www.gofundme.com/f/rebuild-uncle-johnnys-hostel-in-erwin-tn Still could use help. There are several updates on this page from the beginning.
