I have cleaned up after myself and often after others....but I still get comments from those living in homes, like why don't you just get rehabilitated....really I don't use drugs or alcohol. I have a mental health problem that has taken everything away from me.....with no help in sight. I still try to do the right thing everyday, they can't take that away from me. Yep. The stereotypical "homeless" folks media portray as drug-addicted, mentally disturbed, criminals represent at most 15-20% of the total homeless population. Meanwhile, media ignores the fact that folks WITH HOMES commit more crime---and more serious crime---than folks without homes. And our governments, everywhere and at every level, are populated with rabid feminazi zealots who have a white hot hate on for homeless folks who are 80% MALE.

Bruce you are so dear. I was brought up with homelessness. At that time it was mostly Native people and alcoholics. They were harmless. My Mom talked to them while hanging cloths. People didn’t live in vehicles back then. I feel, us as a society we should provide for them. But, homelessness is big business. In Edmonton, the Mustardseed get $2000. 00 pre person, pre bed that they receive from the government. It’s an industry, so many people benefit from their suffering. Today, I follow many vehicle dwellers. It’s a lifestyle. Remember, many vehicle dwellers are traveling in the summer. Chrome for instance is close to the Yukon.

Hey Bruce, I love your message and lead by example myself in my community, here in Connecticut in the USA. Unfortunately, this is a very complex problem. Like you mentioned, I think more and more people are being forced out onto the streets due to the cost of living. Those of us who are resourceful and still working will have the sense to maintain our vehicles and be self-reliant enough to thrive in less-populated areas. The inner city poor will stay in the inner cities, along with all of the trouble that brings, and rely on government to take care of them. Due to the cost of even maintaining a vehicle now, some may not be able to easily afford to make it out. It’s a harsh truth but all we can do is keep our heads up and lead by example, like you said. We’re not in Kansas anymore, but we can bring a piece of it wherever we go!

Hello Bruce. It's really sad you have to make a video like this. It's like this in the US and probably in other countries as well. Growing up I remember a commercial about a Native American aka The Crying Indian (Iron Eyes Cody) on a horse campaigning against littering. It first came out in 1971. Several different versions came out with him always sitting on his horse overlooking the mess and shedding a tear at the end. I was 9 at the time and remember it well. I've always had respect for the Native American's. Thank you for caring so much about our planet. Not many speak up nowadays. I hope this video and Chrome's wake up some people and make them realize that we need to stop destroying the planet.

I believe it’s more the outside look of the vehicle than the trash left behind where we have been. I am not full time but we travel almost every weekend and stay in our vehicles. We actually just got back from a trip to Montana a cpl hours ago and stayed in a parking lot that had signs everywhere saying no overnight camping….we asked and they said it’s no problem for one or two nights but they have had people staying for 6 months with vehicles that are broken down and don’t move - no registration - no plates - stolen property- and police visiting them everyday because they are well known criminals so that’s why they put signs up. We always park late - keep within our vehicle unless we are going in shopping (which we try to support every business that we stay at) and leave early everywhere we go. We have never gotten a knock on our door. I know some people are in a very bad position with absolutely no money but as a business owner myself I wouldn’t want a bunch of what I see sometimes parked in my parking lot at night. It’s just a bad situation but in my opinion there are two types of “vehicle dwellers”….the ones that can afford to do it and insure/register it - maintain a safe and clean vehicle - afford to drive it around so they aren’t permanent eyesores to the business but enjoy the lifestyle….and the ones that are pretty much a homeless shelter. There’s no nice way to say it but the huge quantity of vanlifers/vacationers mixed in with the bad ones are really making the vanlife lifestyle of traveling in your vehicle on adventures harder every year. Once you get to your destination who knows if you will find a place to even sleep anymore. I have also been to several campgrounds that wouldn’t even let us stay there in our vehicle so we take a tent and set it up but stay in our vehicle to make them happy. I really don’t know if there is a solution with the cost of living these days…some people are just trying to survive.
@sharonb.91284 ай бұрын
Great video. You have pointed out the reality that a lot of people need to take the time to understand the difference between being “homeless” and being a vehicle dweller. The difference comes down to money and resources. That’s it. Having the financial or social resources to change your situation. I think platforms like KZbin and instagram have helped some people who were homeless become vehicle dwellers.

I’ve watched documentaries about hoarding, which is what it’s called in sticks and bricks. One of the biggest causes that is common to a lot of stories is loss. Divorce, death, children grow up and move away, job loss, and those kinds of traumas. I can only imagine what kinds of losses people have suffered by the time they end up living in a vehicle when they don’t want to. It has to be just as paralyzing, debilitating, and overwhelming. I wish there was more outreach and help for people out there.
@shellywelsh23164 ай бұрын
I was born and raised in Alberta and at 26 moved to Vancouver Island. Been here 33 years and love both provinces very much. The problem with BC is that a few provincial goverments ago they came up with the no so bright idea to close the majority of the mental health units thinking the "It takes a village to raise a child" motto that the communities can help to care and provide with those that need the help. No infrastructure was set up so these people have just been left to their own devices. There is not enough drug rehabs to support those who need the help as well. Then to top it all off, Vancouver and Southern Vancouver Island has probably the best winter weather in the country so many homeless Canadians moved here to survive the winter. So, we now have a lot of homeless who need help and there is very little support for them. The government needs to reopen the mental health facilities, open more drug rehabs and help these people. Our tax dollars need to go to this.
@mylifejourney744 ай бұрын
What Bruce showed for BC, i think the cost of living and losing a home is causing massive mental mental health issues. Its a cost of living issue and who knows how many of them lost their homes from wild fires. Not all vehicle dwellers have mental health issues. I have been in BC all my life and I am see more of those encampments because people are losing homes. Its so sad. And now that the wild fires have taken so many homes and cities, its only going to get worse.

I worked overnights at Walmart for a lot of years. We only had a couple of bad rv/campers. One emptied their garbage within feet of a trash bin. Since some of what they dumped were canceled checks, I was tempted to box it up to send back to them. Another decided to exercise their pomies and miniature horses. We priced ourselves on Truckers being able to pull over to stay safe during storms. We were the last stop before wide open space. They closed, as in barricaded, the highway when the winterstorms were really bad. I enjoyed the night footage. Made me feel right at home.

Because the same thing is been happening here we have 17 million people living here. At least I would say 7 million living in their cars at this time. Walmart in the state of Florida has stopped all parking unless you were in a real RV only staying one night passing through and you have to see the manager to get permission. Those are the only people allowed. Nobody in a van or a regular vehicle are allowed to spend the night anymore. They turned it into a campground with barbecues and trash, and using the great outdoors as a toilet in the parking lot. I lost my house a year ago to a hurricane, and found the sad truth. I was almost accosted by five men surrounding my van at 3 AM in a Cracker Barrel parking lot right off of I 95.! I try to explain to the ladies that even in Cracker Barrel you are not safe anymore. This is strictly because of what Walmart did. I’m going to Walmart once a month to buy three things and that’s it. Most people in their cars are no longer shopping at Walmart anymore, and most of the people who did this aren’t staying in the area they’re just passing through so that’s why they don’t care they stay for a week and MoveOn, leaving us who live in the cities without any place to go that’s safe, especially for women and children😢

I'm 48 and I remember when people didn't care at all about trash, throwing it out the car window was like "normal," but over the years I have seen that change and it's really surprising to me that anyone would do that anymore, but they do. I have difficulty when staying in my van just due to age and weight and having type 1 diabetes so I know that I will have to make sure I do something to make it so my van doesn't look "trashy," because I have common sense and I don't like looking LIKE a homeless person, especially since I'm CHOOSING to try to do van life. I thought of having bins/boxes/crates to put my things in to make it easier for me to sort and grab things HOWEVER, I will use a cover for when I'm parked or just in general, I did this before partially. It is harder for some of us to do this but at least we can try to not look bad while doing it. That's my advice to anyone struggling or choosing to live in a vehicle...oh and unless it's that type of place, NEVER set your stuff outside and "chill," that ruins it for everyone else!

Hi Bruce. As a fellow vanlifer (I'm in Ontario, god help me), I get downright scared for my future parking options when I see vehicle dwellers behaving like this. This disrespecting public spaces seems to be a general trend. Here in Ontario, a certain population thinks nothing of pooping on Wasaga Beach and covering it up. Just like back where they come from. But we don't do that here. Now there are surveillance cameras on the beach (which is a provincial park). Again, it scares me.

I know the areas that you’re talking about while some of them you should blame the government for that because most of those people around a fixed income and they’re elders a lot of them there is some drug addicts but most of our elders

Regardless on why or who is there or anywhere for that matter I believe If they would like to continue being there or anywhere Making a mess of the areas is not the way to prolong the time allowed 🤷♂️ If the areas are at least clean looking it looks much better , seeing a vehicle or tent somewhere looks much different when there is a pile of trash next to it is all I’m saying I mean no disrespect by mentioning this just to make a point of how I feel about it personally 😅🙏 And also it’s just what has worked for me for years now

Hmm. Of course leaving a mess in a parking lot is very wrong and even destructive. However, doing major vehicle repairs on the street - leaving oil spots and doing donuts in a parking lot - is equally as bad. Those that live in glass houses probably shouldn't throw stones.

I did my best to clean up after myself very well as best I could As for working on vehicles in the street Some things can’t be avoided Not all of us have the funds to rent a shop or take it to one All I can do is make sure it’s as clean if not cleaner then I left it 🤷♂️ But I can also admit that I need to do better myself as do we all. ❤️

It’s the same with camping. 🏕️. You don’t have to be a nomad or homeless. I see this all the time. Sucks in beautiful pristine places 😡

Everyone always complains about nomad/homeless, tourists, or people moving in but after being on the road for years now I find the people that cause the most destruction to places are locals. All those beer cans, trash bags, etc are from locals usually
