I hope one gets kept as a museum item. Remarkable technology that is very unlikely to ever be repeated.

And they're boasting like this is a good thing? Horrible end to a mighty machine. I just hope the future is at least brighter for her sister, The Princess Anne.

Very sad to see The Princess Margaret picked to pieces. She was the only SRN4 hovercraft I got to travel aboard. I was treated to a flight in her cockpit from Dover to Calais and return when I was an inquisitive schoolboy. The late Captain Tony Stand was in command. We'll probably never see the like on the Channel ever again.

This video shows exactly how Great Britain has gone from good to bad over time. The uk is going down the pan and fast.

The one remaining SRN4 should be restored to running condition it's a scandal both weren't preserved I hope the princess Anne doesn't eventually meet the same fate these were British made British designed and years ahead of anything even when the tunnel opened the hovercraft was quicker ! Ironically now we're out of the EU they might have got the duty free back that subsidized the service.

Sadly had the engines removed in 2002, so would be very expesive to even get it engines in. It will be a museam piece untill it rots. Hopefully someone saves it though.

Sad end for a magnificent machine. It would be good to have the remaining one (Princess Ann) restored in working condition, like it is done with some old steam locomotives, to serve as a historic tourist attraction.

What was the reason for scrapping this could this not be modified to be more efficient and put into service somewhere around the world

I don't know whether I went on this one, but I went on one of them several times. Though they were quite quick on the channel route, they weren't especially comfortable. So I suspect that they wouldn't work on route that was much longer, because people would become ill, and refuse to use it again. So it needs a route that has enough car traffic and coach traffic (yes, it could take coaches) but at most a 40 km crossing. They consumed a lot of fuel. No doubt modern engines could have reduced that, but the price of fuel would still be an issue. In summary, I think there are few places indeed where this craft would make economic sense. A shame, but there it is.

It was badly corroding, holes all over! A person bought them both some time back and basically left them to rot! At least one is left getting some TLC!

I think I read somewhere that the museum would save £15k lease for the spot of land she was on. Wondering what the ‘restoration’ of Princess Anne actually means. Would be lovely to see one operational again for demo runs etc. But then I thought that about keeping one Concorde operational even for ground runs. Sad the appetite just doesn’t seem to be there anymore.

@@cornisc no spare parts, no skilled pilots, fuel too expensive for a tiny charity museum to afford, no maintenance equipment and this type of craft no longer being legal are among some major reasons why it can’t be flown again.

All these people with these great ideas about saving this craft but people seem to forget that this type of project would require lots of money and many skilled volunteers. It’s all very well but neither are available. I suspect the Hovercraft Museum struggle as it is with both of these things. If only I was a multi millionaire…….

I would like to see the old hovercraft running together after I heard they are coming back to life for the big project that is promised to the public where they have hovercraft running from ( river Merseyside to North Wales to other places around UK) it would be nice to see them :) :) as well it will be the first time having a ride on them but I did not know one of them got destroyed that made me feel sad and the other one got saved by the public from getting destroyed instead of destroy the other hovercraft what about putting in a new Museum somewhere else so the history could still live a bit like the two fairy boats like the MV Royal Irish stuck in London & the ferry Endeavour what is in Liverpool docks what the public has donated money to to get fixed up before seeking on the water a little bit like the Royal Iris

What happened to the land - developed for housing?
@philjackson43653 жыл бұрын
It's still being used as a hovercraft museum - the other SRN4 is still there. No idea why they had to scrap that one, but I would guess that there was no chance of either ever being restored to working. More would need to be replaced than kept, frankly.
