Hey everyone! I just randomly checked in on this video after almost 5 years and was shocked to see how many views and comments it has. Thank you so much to everyone who has watched and interacted with it over the past half-decade. I made this video during a period of unemployment when I was fresh out of film school (which is where some of the over-analysis that I've been accused of comes from lol) and pursuing a career in the television & film industry. I had planned to make more videos but life got busier and to be honest I forgot all about this channel. Now that I've re-discovered it I hope to release a few new videos this winter. Stay tuned and thanks again!

all of you didnt get the significance of the dialogue. one theme of the movie is about atheism vs church. smart vs stupid daniel is smart. paul is smart. but eli is stupid. eli calls his father a stupid man. calls paul stupid as well. at the end, eli accepts that he is a stupid man. daniel tells him, paul was smarter than you. eli never got his 5000. paul got 10000 right away. understand, stupid & smart are another themes of this movie.

"I'd like it better if you didn't think I was stupid." Daniel's man grins, just slightly, and glances at Daniel. "I like this kid", he's saying. With the implication that he knows Daniel is also impressed. They thought they were dealing with a rube. They're at once disappointed and happy to find out he isn't a rube at all. Getting the info for free would have been nice, but they respect the kid for not allowing himself to be taken advantage of.

I like and respect your reading of the scene and There Will Be Blood is also one of my long-time favourite films and I have a tremendous respect for Anderson. Still, I do have to say: aside from great introductions to further characters via some fantastic scene blocking as well as certain strong symbolism of Paul (with Eli's face) sitting between Plainview and his adopted son, I think you've read perhaps a little too deep into apparent meaning of camera movement and placement of spotlights; not to mention - some of it goes directly against the logic of the argued points: by being ultimately duped and revealing the location of the family farm, as you imply, Paul's higher light should actually be the lower one; he's not gaining afterall, he's just been duped, apparently, and finally revealed his cards. I see the symbolism to be quite different there. I don't believe Paul was duped at all. I think what he stood for, symbolically, was truthfulness and lack of greed - the downfall of both Daniel and Eli. Paul was being realistic about what he could ask for, he wasn't trying to hoax anyone and played straight. He is akin to H.W. (hence the connection is revealed when they both briefly look at each other with the only true display of genuine friendliness in the entire scene): neither Paul nor H.W. are greedy and they both eventually leave the places corrupted with greed and hypocrisy into their own futures, freeing themselves from its curse. Plainview, on the other hand, is like Eli: a greedy hypocrite who masks as a family man to achieve his means. He stands for insatiable greed of capitalism. Eli is his religion-based counterpart, just as clever and hiding under the guise of a shepherd and a prophet - he's the institutionalised church. They both recognise each other for what they truly are during Sunday farm purchase negotiations in another great scene. A nemesis to one another, they are both cursed to each other's presence ever since then, both seeing their downfall in their greed and untruthfullness. Daniel ending up a degenerate alcoholic murderer, living the rest of his days in solitude among his useless riches with no family he secretly strived for; Eli presumably meeting his Maker only minutes after denouncing him and finally revealing himself as a charlatan. Both got what they deserved, both went down together. What Anderson promised, he delivered - in that final scene, there was blood, real and symbolic.

At 8:22 Daniel's hat is off his head and sitting between him and Paul meaning "hats off to you for finding me." Also, the director was trying to show the audience that something would eventually come between them. Hat is three letters and oil is three letters. Also, Daniel's partner is smoking with his left hand, the closest to Paul, as if to tell the audience that Paul and his family will be a cancer to the operation. I also like how Paul is holding his hat here with both hands. This is director telling the audience that Paul will get his hands on something soon - most likely Daniel's money. Or at least he will try. Just adding to your analysis. Also, fun fact: This movie took 24 years to make because the director put so much thought into each scene and foreshadowing.

I love that you're deeply analyzing this stuff. And while some of the stuff may be the directors intent, I think a lot of it isn't. For example, I'm no great filmmaker, but I try to put symbolism like this in many of my own films, and when people try to analyze them, they are waaaaaay off, and pick up on things I never even intended. I love when Daniel leans forward, brandishing his clutch of wrinkled cash, concealing his mouth with the greasy stack of currency. He's finally answering Paul's earlier inquiry regarding what "church" he goes to. This gesture speaks volumes. Daniel consumes currency like crude oil, sucking it dry like a pilfered milkshake. Money (in this moment) is Daniel's bait; while remaining both Daniel's sword and his shield. Money exchanged (as reward) is often the devil's handshake. And finally, if you watch this film, bearing in mind its conclusion, you can faintly imagine Daniel's inner-voice whispering across his stained desk like a patient snake uncoiling, "This is my church boy. This is my church, and all are welcome." Great interpretation of an equally great scene. It brings me joy when the archetypal efforts of true artisans do not pass in unrecognized silence. Easy Sub...

When I watched the movie, I got the impression that the Daniel Plainview was not as evil as the writers wanted the audience to think. Daniel was not worse than Eli or Tilford or the other characters. Paul didn't get duped by Daniel. Getting $500 was huge at the time. Even if that is all he got, that was a ton of money at the time. It was enough to make it worth it. I do not call that "getting duped." The people who get screwed or killed by Daniel later do not seem to deserve better treatment.

The bill Daniel shows at 3:50 is an 1882 gold certificate. Those and silver certificates were highly coveted as forms of paper money in general, but especially out West because were directly redeemable for actual metal (or specie). There was more trust in those than in other types of government issued bills. The person on the bill his hand covers is Thomas Hart Benton, a Senator and politician of numerous offices before that. Those are quite expensive in good condition, so it's probably a laser copy, but it does look right. He would've likelier have had 1902 series National Bank Notes than bills that were 30 yrs old in a 1911 scene. They always use those gold certificates in West movies because they have GOLD written in bold yellow letters. You can plainly see the denoms on those. National banks, however, were all over the place by 1911 issuing government backed money in thousands of towns and cities. It no longer made a difference by then whether it was a gold cert because all US money was gold backed by that point.

@nonplayerzealot4

I agree. The late, great Nixon of course did away with that. They churn out millions in paper money every single day at the Fed. As a paper money and coin buff, the precious metals era did make for a lot of types of monies. Since every dollar had to be accounted for then, multiple sectors of the economy had to be used to back every bill. All the way up to 1966, $100 bills were legal tenders and NOT Federal Reserve Notes. They looked the same but had red seals instead of green ones. Thus, back in Daniel's day, there were like 4-5 different types of money circulating at the same time unlike what we have today. There were gold certs, silver certs, legal tenders, treasury notes (coin notes as they were called), national bank notes. Rich folk always had a mix of different types of bills in their bill folds. By 1911+, national bank notes became the most common. By then, there were thousands of chartered banks and those bills were essentially backed by gold just like gold certs, even though they were completely different in appearance. Gradually all the other types were phased out because they became more unnecessary as banks had truly proliferated enough to cover the entire country.. They always use those gold notes like Daniel had in Old West movies, tho. National bank notes don't translate as well on screen. They're much more bland looking. However, as I'm a nerd who pays attention to this kinda stuff, this was the only time I've seen a true copy of one in a movie. In other movies like Young Guns 2 and The Quick And The Dead, they had shitty facsimiles, black and white or poor copies. This bill here looks very good.

Interesting stuff...really! Or the famous 'greenbacks' that Westerns loved using. (It was actually an ingenious way of paying for the war by Lincoln and Stevens instead of the high interest loans the Rothschild banksters were offering.) I've read Thaddeus Stevens system of gold backed currency was used up until 1916(?) when Woodrow sold us out with the establishment of the Federal Reserve. (He later regretted doing it.) Is it true JFK was wanting a return to silver standard shortly before he was killed? Amazing how bills were actually worth the specie they represented-until another move by the banksters in 1933 when FDR made it mandatory that all gold be turned in. I'm surprised people back then allowed it to happen but they always use a crisis (the Depression which Hoover rightly thought would sort itself out without government meddling) in order to make people give up rights and implement more control. People today are shocked when I tell them that bill they're holding is worth absolutely nothing-only that they believe it's worth something makes it so.

You've got a good mind for history, bro. My memory is kind of hazy on this, but I read somewhere awhile ago that greenbacks (Demand Notes) created a fuzz in Congress because it was a scenario where the President was asking to authorize a fiat currency in lieu of borrowing from banks. For a period, they were redeemable in gold, so they had both characteristics until the banking system ran out of gold. After that, they were redeemed en masse and they had to offer interest on Demand Notes to keep them afloat. Fortunately, the public was so out of money and coinage that they became trusted out of necessity. They were using postage stamps as coins then. There's a type of coin/stamp called Encased Postage Stamps that are worth thousands today. Wiki page: tinyurl.com/yah4efvc I recently saw one of those on a Pawn Stars rerun. Years before, Continental currency (fiat) became highly devalued. I've seen a doc on the Fed (it's on YT) and how they make paper money. It was on TV circa 2001. The head guy at the Fed explicitly said what you wrote at the end in your last reply. It's the trust in the US Government that makes the bills acceptable all around the world. In Mexico, it's practically their top currency. They take US money no problemo. I haven't heard that about JFK, but I'm not really a conspiracy theorist on his death. It only takes one worthless sack of shit like LHO or Mark David Chapman to assassinate someone special and LHO had already attempted to assassinate some general he disagreed with visavis Cuba with the same rifle only months before 11/22. Shot at him thru his window while he was reading in a chair inside, but iirc, the round hit the window frame. Anyway, it is coincidental that silver coinage was ceased right after his death. Dimes, quarters, and halfs are used as a convenient form of junk silver in canvas bags now. I've heard the existence of large denom bills were made in 1928 and 34 in order to exchange for all the gold around the nation. Only coin collectors were able to keep their gold coins if they were rich enough to have them.

The US dollar is pretty much excepted everywhere. It's why Putin and China want to do away with it and replace it with the petrodollar. I'm not an Obama fan and I think the trillions he churned out flooded the market and inflation happened, except our press (infatuated with Obama) failed to tell anyone. Faith in US currency has really fallen thanks to our 20 trillion debt and bad foreign policies.

It’s interesting how this movie has important desks scenes like this at beginning in end. With characters in similar positions. There’s this scene, and then H.W.’s scene at the end, with his interpreter to Daniel’s left, rather than fletcher. Daniel even has men further off in the background to still balance out that power differential, but they’re far off and out of focus. I agree Paul influenced the father/son separation, but the case can also be made that Paul influenced H.W. finding out the truth about his life, and now he’s in the position Paul was in at the beginning of the film.

I like your concept, I think you have lots of potential. Subscribed. Criticism: not mentioning when Paul says $600. I think this is what demonstrated to Daniel that he was truly holding valuable information, because he ends up accepting Paul's full offer, which is the only time he does this with anyone throughout the film. I think your focus is more on the staging and not so much dialog, but that's the part of the scene that stood out the most for me. Anyways, I'm excited to see more, you have a good eye it seems.

I do enjoy this scene. It shows that both Paul and Daniel are good at probing for information, though Paul is green he still shows a nack for pulling info from people. That is shown when each time they ask him, his name he in turn asks them a question. I also like at the end when Daniel gives Paul a hand shake and calmly threatens him, Paul smiles and tells him "Yes, Sir." To me that shows two things, one how confident Paul is about oil being on the land and two that if he is wrong he is willing to get the stuffings beat out of him. I like to think that if there was no oil and Daniel went looking for Paul to get his money back and take a bit more out of his hide, Paul and him would first talk a bit maybe have a small laugh then Paul would look at Daniel and say. "Well, a deal is a deal lets get this over with." The ending scene would be Daniel whipping blood off his face with a rag and saying. "Only man that I have met that stood behind his word completely and took it like man too."

The only thing that I think is really of note about this scene, is the amount that he pays Paul for the information leading to the New Boston oil discovery: $500. During the bowling alley scene at the end of the movie, Daniel tells Eli that he paid Paul $5,000 for the information that he gave him. This shows Daniel's dedication to holding a grudge, he ballooned up the price that he bought the information for by 10 times, just to make Eli feel 10 times worse than if he would have told him the truth. Other than that, and maybe Daniel's eye-opening comment to Paul that if he ripped him off, he's coming to get his money back and more, the scene is really of no importance. Much better scenes to have chosen for this would have been the bowling alley scene, the entire dialogue free opening 20 minutes, the steakhouse scene, and even a couple other ones.

I'm having a difficult time viewing Daniel as a totally evil character. A bit cold and detached but he grinded out his living in a harsh environment. He used HW as a prop but who in business hasn't used the family image for advantage? I'm wondering how most people would of reacted if they had put in the effort of organizing people and resources to drill oil only to have somebody like Eli burned it down intentionally over a slight? I'm overlooking something here?

Paul wasn't duped. Paul was paid for something that he didn't personally own. He did very well, and puts his luck and intelligence to work. He had neither the means nor the know-how to extract and sell the oil himself. He needed Daniel. Daniel drove a hard bargain, and certainly had thoughts of ripping the kid off at first. But he saw something in Paul that he liked and respected. Paul was nobody's fool. Daniel liked that. I think he responded best to people in whom he recognized himself to some degree. No doubt he could have paid more, but the point is he paid. Daniel is not entirely ruthless. He DOES have a sense of fairness. He doesn't care about people, but he cares about honor. At least his own understanding of honor. Violate honor, either his version or your own, and you incur his wrath.

This scene is brilliant because this young man introduced himself as "Paul" and Daniel states that if he found out that he was ever lying to him, he will take more than his money back. This young man "Paul" is Eli trying to play slick, and Daniel is a man of his word that doesn't like tricks or lies and that's where they rival and Daniel takes it personal when Eli tales the wood later in the camp scene. This is a very very good detail in the movie.
