Don't forget: "haven't been sleeping well due to weird insomnia" ! Even if you PR you can still bring up the hurdles that you had to overcome (to insinuate that you probably would've PRed by even more if it had not been for all these disadvantages and things that weren't even optimized!). Sure, it would be a humblebrag, but make sure you cloak it with enough #vulnerability and hashtag #authenticity🏃🏻♂🙌

The art of lowering expectations is alive and well! You should sell a pre-race Serious Runner calendar with the excuses pre-populated. Pure gold!

In the movies there is heartwarming music to reinforce the hero's "vulnerability" and it gets everyone right in the feels. Cultivating, planting, and tending excuses is the highest form of the serious runner's art.

The Excuse Matrix is so powerful. It should be adopted for work settings. “I am not the smartest person in the room, so I worked extra hard and pull some all nighters to deliver this project.”

I set my PR in an 8K cross-country race after tripping on a tree root and falling down the one hill in north Jersey and getting water on the knee. I _always_ bring that up when discussing that one ;-)

I followed Serious Runner's 4-week Excuse Planning Plan, and it totally worked!!! I got the bad race result I feared, but by strategically planting seeds of doubt to my followers in the lead-up - I was able to just about get as many kudos and comments praising me as when I PR'd. I'm going to use this for every training cycle!

Is this inspired by the another serious runner Eric Floberg? I remember one excuse where the non-PR was due to the hilly route in Boston. So it actually was a Grade Adjusted PR.

You could add: pretend to put in effort coaching underprivileged children to their 5K PR and make that the reason why you are "loving investing in others even if it's at the detriment of your own training". You'll never have to provide proof because you are protecting the privacy of those kids and it adds virtual signaling bonus points.
