oh, dont get it wrong, when you find a deal you find a deal and if you know where to look, you can do good. I got a china rail humbucker, and it did good, but couldn't be split and was low output, I replaced it with a higher output 'branded' rail, while the sounds are the same, I don't get 'fret buzz' from strings hitting the pickups due to how high I had to set them. also got a china set of locking tuners... now that I have hipshot on mine, I know how horrible china locking tuners are, again don't get me wrong, for the price they were better then what I had, but due to slop and backlash in the gearing, I wanted to eliminate all potential tuning issues, and at 60$ the hipshot were no shit. fact of the matter is alot of china parts are good enough and if they come messed up in some way, my pickup would not coil split for instance even though it should be able to, you will run into some where they just dont pot them, so knowing how to pot the pickups is necessary, or they may underwind, which knowing how to find the people who will sell you good shut lies. when you buy from china, and buy at bottom barrel prices, expect issues you can live with. otherwise find brands/sites that will buy from known good chinese sources and will somewhat guarantee what you are getting. on the tuner front, unless you are playing a locking tuner guitar, do not buy cheap from china hoping for good quality, it was shocking to go from china to hipshot and just see how big the quality difference was and how different they are constructed, the china had pin shafts that go all the way though, while hipshot has separate bits for the shaft and the part that touches the string, and on my china ones, the shaft on some of them never went all the way in I had a few that would close so I put those as the smaller strings tuners and the ones where they would gape I left as the larger strings, when the knobs fell off, well now its time to take a pliers to it to tighten it but shockingly super glue got it to hold on good, have no idea way. tldr, deals exist, but know what you are getting, I bought my china stuff knowing it would be replaced and this is a test to see if I can install the parts without risking expensive ones.

@W̶̷̲̅L̶̷̲̅O̶̷̲̅ғ̶̷̲̅ᴀ̶̷̲̅ɪ̶̷̲̅ʟ̶̷̲̅s̶̷̲̅ most of the the bigger manufactures, at least the ones that stick more to oem side of things, have a level of quality they try to hit over and over again, the trick is knowing what you are getting is from one of those oems, I find that 20-30$ a pickup someone like guitar fetish guarantees what i'm getting while china, the land of counterfeits and no branding makes it a near nightmare to know what you are getting is and not a knock off, like he said, there are some things you can do and watch for that let you come out on top... but still, I would treat whatever you get from china as a test/intermediary rather then for good item. my single rails and tuners were so I know what i'm getting and were an upgrade regardless of how bad they were, but that may not be the case for you. that said, if it comes down to anythings an upgrade and i don't have cash, yea, chinas a great way to get decent gear.

They are likely cosmetic rejects from the EMG factory. We bought an extra set of factory wheels for our winter tires - I looked through Rock Auto until I found the ones that looked like the factory Denso ones for 1/3 the cost and they have performed actually better than the original ones in the wheels that came on the car. The only difference when looking at the ones that came in the original tires was literally only the markings. Cover up any markings, and they were indistinguishable from each other. Not a fake - they're factory rejects that test out okay but maybe don't look as good. Super common practice to sell them unbranded to recoup manufacturing losses from defects and bring unusable product count down. Very common practice.

Yes, I put another 25k resistor to a tone cap over the output, so 2 * 25k volume pots is good but not one. 1 is a bit slack on controlling the treble spikes at the output, and instead I use a retrograde turning high pass for a sub filter. Using three pots, 1 volume, the second is a acting as the treble control, and the third pot acts as a bass and sub filter before the output filter. Wow. Much more control. Use a 10k pot for a single volume and you wont need to turn the tone pot to cut the trebles so much.

1 hour ago (edited) I bought a pair of active EMG clones. Output is very high but clean tones are not as easy to get as they might be with genuine EMGs. With high gain, clarity and definition decrease. Maybe moreso with the clones than the real thing but for a small fraction of the cost ($35 and I've seen them as low as $17), the clones are not that bad. I'm going to compare them to Seymour Duncan active clones just to see the difference between the EMGs and the SDs. All this on project guitars. I'm not putting $200 pickups in a $100 or$200 guitar. The real things are most likely better but I suspect you're paying a very large portion of the price just for the name on them. It's hard to hear the difference on phone or PC speakers . For the money, why not try them out? BTW, the EMG solderless wiring kit is worth the $50 and works with SDs or any other active with the 3 pin header on the back of the pickup.

Pickups costs nearly peanuts to build man, all around is legend, handwiring is a joke compared to machine wired, big profit in there.

Do you have to route out a battery compartment if you're changing from passive PUs ?

It depends on the guitar. Many guitars have enough free space in the control cavity to hold a 9v battery.

@@GuitarMAXMusic - some folks move the tension springs in back of a Stratocaster to outside leaving enough space for a 9v battery. You can often use same hole as ground wire to bridge :-)

By this I mean use left and right spring hooks and take out inner 3 - that's where battery can go ... I realise it could have sounded like I meant to put the claw springs outside their box :-) Nah ... That might get one tangled if you are playing an exciting set :-)

Small question, i wanted to buy Dragonfire pick-ups but it's 35 bucks shipping to EU + 41 bucks per set. Since it's too expensive for yet, would you recommend me cheap Alnico 5 pick-ups or these active pick-ups ? For heavy metal riffs and solos ? Thanks everybody !
